    What a beautiful interview. Sarah Paulson is so talented and beautiful and it’s nice to hear some worldly words of encouragement from someone as accomplished as her. This is advice we can all take and really allow it to help us move forward. So often I get stuck on “why am I not good enough?” when comparing myself to others and it’s so toxic. Thank you for this!

      I read your comment and when I saw the remark about comparing yourself to others, it reminded me of one of my favorite poems. You may or may not have heard it but I'm just going to share it. It is called Desiderata, written in the 50s, when America was in many ways, great. And it seems more timely then ever. It's stuff we shouldn't need to be reminded of, but its almost like my Bible. This usually sorts me out, do to speak.
      Desiderata
      Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
      and remember what peace there may be in silence.
      As far as possible without surrender
      be on good terms with all persons.
      Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
      and listen to others,
      even the dull and the ignorant;
      they too have their story.
      Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
      they are vexations to the spirit.
      If you compare yourself with others,
      you may become vain and bitter;
      for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
      Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
      Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
      it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
      Exercise caution in your business affairs;
      for the world is full of trickery.
      But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
      many persons strive for high ideals;
      and everywhere life is full of heroism.
      Be yourself.
      Especially, do not feign affection.
      Neither be cynical about love;
      for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
      it is as perennial as the grass.
      Take kindly the counsel of the years,
      gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
      Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
      But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
      Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
      Beyond a wholesome discipline,
      be gentle with yourself.
      You are a child of the universe,
      no less than the trees and the stars;
      you have a right to be here.
      And whether or not it is clear to you,
      no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
      Therefore be at peace with God,
      whatever you conceive Him to be,
      and whatever your labors and aspirations,
      in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
      With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
      it is still a beautiful world.
      Be cheerful.
      Strive to be happy.
      Max Ehrmann, Desiderata, Copyright 1952.

      Acting is not meritocratic but most other industries are more so. You can't get a job doing marketing campaigns if your background is making food, or rather, it's hard to do that. Most jobs are skills-based - acting jobs are just so rare that it's not going to be the same thing.

    Oh my God that spoke so much to me... Actually while she was talking about acting and getting rejected in auditions I was getting tears in my eyes for another reason. I felt rejected by someone who matters to me recently. That made all my self steem vanish and I am/was trapped on self-loathing thoughts such as "my personality and looks aren't enough or even good at all, just look at how she's treated me"... Anyway, at the ending, when she says "I'm not just talking about being an actor... It's not for the faint of heart, being a person... It's hard". I don't know, it just spoke to me. About validation in general, in every aspect of life. How much of ourselves we put in other people's hands.

      I could really relate to this, thanks for sharing. I think most of us have the wound of unworthiness, deep down, and we do look outside ourselves for love and validation; the problem, really, is that we believe that we're the inadequate person we imagine ourselves to be. It can be a startling thing to realise that, oh, I'm not the stupid/ugly/incompetent/useless [delete as appropriate] person I thought I was.
      (Though of course the question then is, 'If I'm not that, just who or what *am* I?')

    It's very hard to really internalize this message though. The work of a lifetime, I guess. When she says that she would be the same actress if nothing had ever happened and she had to make movies in her basement or whatever... I feel it's probably easier to believe that when one HAS had the validation, you know? Like if that were really her situation it would still be true but I imagine she would have a harder time believing it. This is my struggle as a 33-year-old musician who hasn't "made it." I know I don't suck, and I know what I'm doing has value, but it just hasn't ever made its way to the ears that need it, and it's hard to truly feel the self-worth she's describing.

      J. Levi C. I really like your comment. I love this conversation as a whole actually. The idea that all of these big names are just people, exactly like everyone who isn't well known. We tend to believe that value goes hand in hand with recognition and that is both sad but beautiful. Sad because we can fall down a rabbit hole of self loathing but beautiful because we already are enough. Kind of like what you said about knowing you're good. You don't need screaming fans and your name on a giant screen to know that your work has value. It might make you feel even better about it if you had gained fame but you'll always be the same person you were from the start. You always had value! This is a really uplifting topic to me; just goes to show how amazing people really are whether they're famous or not and whether they believe it or not. But they should believe it! Value will always be there

      charles bukowski didn't become a successful writer until well into his 50's, but he always kept writing despite not finding the success he wanted. there was a period of time that he stopped, and so i can understand that in the situation there will always be a point where you begin to doubt if it's ever possible, but he kept going because writing was what he knew he wanted to do, he had to do it, whether the success came or not. when you have a love for what you do, you just can't stop doing it, even if it doesn't bring you success. i mean they all had other jobs, life didn't stop, but they still did what they loved.

    Sarah Paulson nailed it. Self-worth has steered away from how we value ourselves and what we do in every-day life, and has become us valuing the opinions of others about ourselves, and it's led to people struggling to believe in themselves. If we get back to loving and knowing we're good enough, everyone could be happy.

    Sarah Paulson is the one of the finest actors alive. Does not even really borrow anecdotes from somewhere else. Her misfortune is also treating people in real life with the neurosis that stems from cruelty. Forget your privilege Sarah when interacting with other artist. When you exercise advantage, you callously and needlessly break hearts. Somethings you do better and appropriately of consequence on screen.

    For me, self worth equates to self love. And for me self love means: fill myself up with love. Meditate, do yoga, do tantra, use all the techniques available to fill myself up with light, with delight, with energy. Then I'm filled up with love; so "my" "self" IS love. A deep contentment arises. The question of worth does not arise. And this state is certainly not dependent on externals: jobs, auditions, talent, or reviews on E!

    I fucking LOVE HER!!!!
    She IS her OWN PERSON and seems to really not give a shit about what people think of her. She loves and respects herself and that's ALL that matters!! Plus I TOTALLY admire that's she's in harmony and love with someone older (shout out to Ms. Holland Taylor, she's always awesome and amazing!) and has NO QUALMS about it. And why? Because she REALLY doesn't care what people think. She loves. Period. How cool is that?

    "Don't ever confuse your self worth with your ability to get a job..." or your ability to stop twitter trolls from feeding on anger, or your ability to get an ex-girlfriend to friend you on facebook, or your ability to win at badminton.

    Love it. Sure...some actors, writers, etc absolutely seem to deserve "it" and very often you'll hear that someone was over due for their "success" but there is still this element of "they got exactly what they deserved" even if there is a "finally" thrown in there. The reality is that some actors sleep walk their way into stuff. Such an enormous element of luck involved that I just can't stand the people who think everything is fair and everyone receives their due....you know...eventually. Bull shit. Some actors, writers,etc die before anyone has a clue how talented they were. Some die or just change careers and NEVER get the credit they deserve. I realize that's not what the Status Quo wants you to believe but that's only because they want you competing for the same part and being content with the crumbs that you receive in the interim. It works quite well for "them".
