The Evenk hitch is a really useful knot for quickly attaching a fixed line to an upright such as a tree - ideal for quickly pitching a tarp. It's also useful for setting up a hanging line under your tarp (see frontierbushcraft.com/2012/04/... for tips on how to get organised under your tarp).
When you need to air your sleeping bag in the morning, you can use this hitch to string up a bit of paracord between two trees in the sunshine (use a round turn and two half hitches or a taut tarp hitch at the other end). Similarly it's useful for even popping up a quick drying line in camp when you come to wash your clothes on extended wilderness trips.
The knot tied is effectively a slippery figure-of-eight knot with the added feature of a quick release.
Used by the Evenk reindeer herders of Siberia, this knot developed as a quick way to tie off reindeer to trees without needing to expose your hands to the cold for very long, tying other fiddly knots.

I have seen people use this hitch before on other videos, but I never quite understood how to tie it. Now I do. Thank you.
My pleasure. I hope you get lots of use out of it. All the best, Paul
Brilliant much better than the bowline I was jawing prior, this along with truckers hitch knots are all you need for a basic ridge line, thanks
You're one great instructor indeed Paul. I ordered my first tarp yesterday and when it arrives, I'm going to start practicing using these knots! Thanks! Greetings from Finland
Many thanks for posting this evenk hitch knot video I found it very useful and very informative which has helped me greatly in perfecting this knot thank you very much Paul
I know this is an old video but I watched one of your tarp videos with the bivy and noticed you tied this knot to begin with. Its such a simple but you pulled it off so quick I was dying to learn it. Thank you for this :)
This is the first time I saw this hitch, I usually use a Canadian jam knot to start my line off, but I might give this one a try. Cheer Paul.
Paul Barlow what is Canadian jam? Is it delicious??
Cheers Paul. I'm heading out into the 'wilderness' of East Sussex today ;-) with my 8 y/o son - I'll be getting him to follow your guidance in this vid to get our tarp set up.
I'll let you know how we get on....
Good clear demonstration of a very valuable Knot. Many thanks Paul.

Yggdrasil Hi Noel. Thanks! :)
Just really starting out in bushcraft, great video clear explanation!
Thanks for sharing!

Great video, probably the clearest and easiest to understand out of all I have seen on this hitch. Also known as the Siberian hitch due to its popularity in Russia, and because of its ease of tying and untying in very cold weather with gloves or mitts not having to be removed. Nice one Paul! All the best!
jediknightofthewoods Thank you my friend. As noted in the description, the Evenk are from Siberia ;) Very useful for quickly securing your reindeer.... All the best mate, Paul
Paul Kirtley Aha! That will teach me to extend the 'About' section fully, instead of seeing two lines and thinking thats all there was to read! All the best!
No worries :) I usually put a bit of useful info in the about section... All the best, Paul
Great instuction where i believe i have it. Will be using a tarp over my tent when cycling from Manitoba to WA state this summer.
You are the best of the best.
Love all your videos
My new favorite hitch!
Great video Paul . great knot to learn thank you for sharing .
Thanks Mo :)
This was the first time that iv'e seen this type of hitch, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure ***** I hope it serves you well. All the best, Paul.
Great video
great video very informative many thanks
Thank you very much!!😀
This is also called a Siberian hitch. I think in the Ray Mears series of 'bushcraft' programs on TV. Ray uses the "Evenk overhand hitch" as he calls it. Its all Good info. I use a simple mooring hitch. Its easier and faster to tie even with gloves on.
TomsBackwoods Hi Tom, indeed it is also referred to as the Siberian Hitch these days (as pointed out by jediknightofthewoods elsewhere in these comments). The Siberian link is also mentioned above ;) It was originally in Ray's World of Survival Series 1997. The Evenk Overhand Hitch as Ray calls it, is a different knot to this one, as you can see from page 158 of his book Essential Buschraft. I agree the Mooring Hitch is also a handy solution. Warm regards, Paul.
Thank you
Thank you sir, very useful.
Very slick
Thnxs for uploading and sharing
Thankyou. Very helpful.
Perfect!
First time visitor. What’s this guy got on Ray Mears? And I wouldn’t mind seeing how the other end is tied up. Cheers.
Very nice. More knots please.
***** Thanks. Noted - I'll add some to my "to-do" list. Cheers, Paul.
Yeah good knot, very easy to do too,i use it both ends to secure my hammock chair too
Atb
Nice one MrSkooty1968 All the best, Paul
Paul what knot would you use on the other end to make the ridge line tight ? Taut line hitch ?
Hi Dale Coffin I'd use this one: Bushcraft: How To Tie A Taut Tarp Hitch
I was wondering...what's the advantage of the evenk hitch compared to any other adjustable loop-knot? Is there a reason this hitch is used for tarp setups? If anyone knows I'd be grateful for any information.
+Aculnahuacatl Tzaqualcatl The main advantage is that it is quick to tie and quick to untie. A round turn and two half hitches will work just as well. Warm regards, Paul
+Aculnahuacatl Tzaqualcatl As Paul wrote above + it can be done with warm gloves/mittens on...try that with other knots in very cold temperatures... ATB, Gereon
Is seems to be similar whit siberian hitch to me
Why the evenk hitch & not the tarp hitch.
Interesting knot, but two half hitches will do the same thing..
I'm right bloody handed.....why do you all lead with your left when doing these knots????
This is not a true Enenki knot! A Enenki knot is used on Reindeer by the Enenkian people and it does not slip otherwise it would choke out the Reindeer. This a Siberian Hitch.
The terms "free" and "live" mean nothing to a non-knot tying human. Bad video overall mostly because of your use of those terms and not defining them. But it seems you did try to explain things you know well and can demonstrate well, but you resorted to using insider terms for and didn't really care about explaining them. So the video ended up being confusing and rather antagonistic to novices. Unfortunately you tried explaining useful information to new comers using insider lingo and because of that you failed. Use real English next time, and not names and terms that normal English speakers use..
