    New Stadium. New Court Surface. Major Tennis Area. What could go wrong? Well... everything.
    Launched in 2018 as the 'NEXT BIG THING' for professional tennis, the New York Open ATP tennis tournament has ultimately gone down in history as a major failure, having been CANCELLED after only 3 years of operation. For such a promising and hyped event, why did the New York Open flop so spectacularly?

    I live in New York. Another problem with this event was that nobody knew it existed. I only went the final year in 2020, and the bigger names (Isner, Anderson, Raonic) all lost in their opening matches. The crowd was more enganged in the doubles match where Opelka and Johnson were partners than in the singles matches.

      Cant believe I can say this but I was there that day. I'm kiiinda proud for staying back for the night session, even though I technically only had the ticket to the day session. I just decided to hide in the corner, quietly watching the doubles players practice on the other court. The match was a lot of fun too, Isner played really well taking the first set. But Reilly just hung in there and impressed us right away by showing some surprising shot tolerance and ability to grind despite his size. Some clutch groundstroke winners were the difference. Also, the crowd seemed to really be backing "Ry-guy". Great match, although a bit predictable until the tie-breakers.

    Yeah I always questioned the scheduling. New York winter is no joke. The best place for this tournament would have been directly before the US Open. Like Sydney before the AO, Lyon before the FO and Eastbourne right before Wimbledon. You’d capitalize on fans already being in NY…

    • @williamford9564
      @williamford9564 3 года назад +13

      I don't think the players and the ATP would accept an indoor tournament just before the US Open. The run ups to the US Open are all outdoors so playing conditions replicate those of the Open and in fact the US Open organizers would never allow it as it would siphon ticket sales away from the Open, especially among middle class people.

And I remember the large groups of school kids and thinking that it was kind of random. It was a cool experience, as a tennis fan, in that it was so different than the us open. You could sit where ever, get autographs from the players, take your time doing whatever because not a whole lot was happening. And there really is nothing in the area other than a McDonald’s across the street, which we went to because the food was super expensive. It reminded me of us open fan week/qualifiers minus all the fans.

I'm not saying that people would have had their fill of tennis from one of the Grand Slam tournaments (and its associated tournaments), nor am I saying that tennis players wouldn't be prepared to travel to the other side of the world after such a major tournament, but I can't imagine it would help.

    say, for example, it ran in the same week as the Atlanta Open, or directly after the US Open/in the second week of the US Open. Would that give the tournament more traction, do you think, since it would be more likely to net players that didn't do too well in Flushing Meadows? Or was this tour just destined not to succeed?

    • @pomerlain8924
      @pomerlain8924 2 года назад +1

      This tournament was just never destined to succeed. It wouldn't work having this played in the summer during the lead-up to the USO due to the fact that all the tournaments are played on outdoor hard courts, using Decoturf.
      This tournament was meant to be a replacement to the Memphis tournament, which was always played in February. Perhaps had this tournament been able to be played at the Barclay's Center or MSG, it could have done better, as there would be plenty to do in NYC. But there was no chance of being able to have any of those venues free for a week.

    I'm from Long Island, and I never knew that the New York Open was a thing. Sure, I'm not a fan of tennis, but I think I would've heard about this prior.
    But I think most people here on Long Island just don't care about tennis, especially during February where we focus more on the Islanders (Or, if you're a fake Long Islander, the Rangers), or the Knicks or Nets.
    The other issue, the one you stated, is that city folks would not want to drive there. But the bigger problem is that there isn't a reasonable train station from the city to Nassau Coliseum via the Long Island Rail Road. The closest ones are Hempstead on the Hempstead Branch, or Carle Place on the Main Line, both being about 2 miles away from the stadium. Besides, city elitists would never dare to sit near plain Long Island folk, on the train or in the stadium.
    Semi-jokes aside, now that UBS Arena in Elmont is finished, and especially with a direct train connection that is especially useful to bring city folks to the stadium, maybe they could try a second shot at the New York Open? Maybe bring more of a connection to the local area in the name. The Long Island Open? Maybe the Belmont Open, to associate it closer to Belmont Park and the famous Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown?

    The tournament was a failure the moment it announced the Nassau Coliseum would be the venue. Had it been played at the Barclays Center or MSG, or anywhere within Manhattan or Brooklyn, the story would have been completely different.

    The last point is the biggest: 250s are very difficult to keep running. Tennis is all about the big names. Los Angeles used to have 1 in the summer; incredible list of former champions - Ashe, Connors, etc. Agassi and Sampras played it. Edberg. UCLA Campus with very nice 5000 seat stadium. But as top players started only playing the 1000s as warmups to the US Open, the field quality dropped dramatically. Then they had problems keeping title sponsors and… off to Bogota. Which also didn’t last long and it’s now in Cabo.

    Basically this was the new SAP Open, I remember right after the Australian Open this tournament would take place so players who didn't do well in Australia would come and get some matches before Indian Wells/Miami Combo. It was indoors, at a hockey arena with a temp surface and even would use courts nearby to host some of the "lesser" known players for singles and doubles. At least that was in a major city, in downtown and gave players and fans stuff to do.

    Howard Stern sold out the Nassau Coliseum for a tennis match against his producer in 1989; they sold16,000 tickets for $22.50 each on under 4 hours. Then they released the event on home video, titled U.S. Open Sores.

    As a Long Island resident, I completely understand the guy who said that it was good his girlfriend was there. Nassau Coliseum isn’t the best location but it’s somewhat close to museum row and Roosevelt field mall. Ny Weather is dismal in February as any Long Island resident would know, especially following this winter’s weather. Even the Islanders moved from the Coliseum. You know it’s bad when the Islanders think it’s bad.

    I literally live 10 minutes from the Nassau Coliseum, and this is the first I'm hearing about the existence of this tournament. WHAT!?!?!?!? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ And it went on for several years?? The marketing for this event was a massive, massive fail. We could have gone and seen ATP tennis for cheap 10 minutes from home and gotten super close to the courts with the near empty stadium. Wow, what a fail to inform the public, totally unreal.

      Hmm. I see what you mean & agree. The call out must have been immediate (one would think/hope); there was little for them to do other than catch the ball being returned to them. Neat catch. I know it's nothing scandalous, I just like seeing how different things unfold.

      @@kneau It struck me because I do remember a French Open match, I think, in the 90s, with, I think, Becker playing, where a ballboy caught the ball midair without letting it bounce when it was clearly out, and the umpire reprimanding him for that. I think rules stipulate that point would have to be replayed in such circumstances.

    Huge mistake to have the tournament in Long Island. Nobody was gonna drive to the middle of nowhere in Nassau from Manhattan, and getting there via public transportation is impossible. The players hated it. The tournament should have been held at MSG, the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, or the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
