Mark: You have an uncanny ability to keep creating videos with very relevant content. This was another great one. I look forward to your updates every week. Thank you!
Mark, I have been watching your videos for the past few months and I have to tell you that I have learned more from you about refining my Photoshop and Lightroom processing than any one else on the internet. Thank you for your easy to understand videos! Keep the great work!
Mark, your presentation style is extraordinary, among the very best videos I’ve viewed, but more importantly, your content is substantive and easily understood.
Most thorough explanation of this technique I've seen yet, and the first one I've seen for applying it in Lightroom, which I appreciate because I that means I can finally apply it to photos I edit on my mobile devices. Thank you!
Mark, This was so helpful. I always wondered how others achieved that "painterly" look. You explanation was so straightforward, clear, and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your video this week. I’ve seen a few videos about this effect and yours is by far the easiest to understand. I’ll definitely have a go with some of my old photos. Thanks again, Jack.
Hi Mark. We are all well , here thanks for the well wishes. This is the first time I've seen Lightroom used to create an Orton-like effect, very useful, thank you. Thanks always for sharing and please stay safe.
Thank you so much for this great video, Mark! I'm a Lightroom newbie and this is the clearest and most helpful example of just one of the effects that Lightroom offers. I look forward to viewing your other helpful videos.
Thank you, Mark! I’m learning PS as my lockdown skill development project. Learning how to create and when to apply the Orton effect is exactly one of the things I want to learn to take my post processing skills to the next level. So, thank you and I hope you are doing well too!
hi mark, I love your setting and eye for the detail in what is in your scene as you set your video up. I am always aware of the lighting on your back wall.. love todays soft purple effect, and what you have to your left. Today you have the usb fob and an old yellow walkman. Love it! Great memories though how you have managed to keep a walkman around all these years..... What are your thought process going into the props around you during your video lessons? Thank you for wonderfully clear and well articulated topics. You are a joy to watch and love your 'quirky' and poised backgrounds. :)
Hi Mark! Just revisited this video for probably the 3rd or 4th time. While I do enjoy the results you achieve with these effects, could you please explain the reasoning behind focus stacking and exposure blending? It seems to me that these Orton Effect techniques simply reintroduce the “imperfections” achieved by taking only one image. Why go to all of the work to achieve a “perfect” image by combining several together, if you then want to intentionally reduce the sharpness and clarity? Any help you could give to improve my understanding would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep the videos coming!
Nice demo Mark! I like the soft dreamy effect. I use Luminar by Skylum which has two types of Orton filter that come with saturation and brightness sliders.
for what it’s worth, Luminar4 has a slider for the orton effect. One additional thing I learned is that I need a new monitor as the effects appeared very minor on my display.
That was very helpful, thank you for walking through that process. ok now this doesn't have anything to do with the content but I cant help wondering about that lens on the shelf behind you, it's there in like every video. What lens is it? It kind of looks like a Canon L, but I guess it could be something else. Is there any reason it has become a permanent fixture on your wall? I guess it could be like one of those Canon L series mugs...
Thanks for the Lightroom explanation. I have only seen PS examples before. I'm working my way up to PS, but not there yet. Will be experimenting with this in LR now. Cheers. Stay safe! (BTW, we're all coming over to your house to celebrate when you hit 100K!)
Thanks again for the video, you have helped so much. No more over editing or horrible compositions. Do you dabble in wildlife photography at all? I find there isn't too much information on it (RUclips anyway)
Used to do something similar somewhat but by the "hard way" and changing the blend to either Soft Light or Overlay (and controlling the HSL too). Strangely I seldom use it to landscape shots but more to portraits!
MARK ...thank's again for a fine tutorial. Finally understood the effect. By the way, I was not able to get the T-Shirt from Hippy Tree, they don't have my size; great Tee, will wait. Un abrazo de México.
Hey Mark, another excellent video on how we can enhance our post-processing skills. And your explanations are so easy to follow. Thank you! BTW, I know that Luminar has a specific Orion tool. Have you tried that? If so, your thoughts? (Almost any- and everything is easier and so much user-friendly than PS). Once again, thank you for sharing this skill with us.
As always I enjoy your ability to explain things in a manner in which I can understand. In this instance I still find the concept of layering and brush tools still out of my reach in Lr and Ps. I think I would do better with one of your 1-2-1 sessions.
Your are a great teacher, Mark! Thank you :) I'm just starting to learn Photoshop and I have a question: what do you do with the Background and the Orton versions? Do you save the Orton layer as an independent image or do you blend them?
In regarding the Orton effect, do it with smart objects instead, as they are not destructive, and you can come back and adjust levels (which I use) later.
Love your videos Mark, but I wish you would shift from Lr/Ps when I don't have the subscription-model of these programs but just Lr 6.14 (stand - alone), to Gimp/Darktable or Rawtherapee :-).
Hi, thank you very much for your help Mark. I was asking myself .. do you go for some small adjustments in lightroom first like tone curve, exposure or whatever and then hit ,,open in photoshop" to add the orton effect? Or do you open the raw image first in photoshop, add the orton effect and then open that one in lightroom to finish it off? Thanks a lot!!
Great, now I have something to test when I have a leave. I only work 60% for now because of the Covid. I have some photographs that be a contender for this.

No I don't do much outside of landscape photography
I love this effect a lot, but like always not too much 😅
I hate those photos where you feel there was like cream on the lens
Yes, it can certainly be overdone!
Love that shirt. I hear the animals are taking over in Yosemite. I can't wait to get back in. 😷🥂
Thanks David! I'm looking forward to getting back as well!

you really need to try luminar , its so much faster procedure!!
"orton Effect" explained in a neat way. Great job Mark as usual.
Thanks so much!
Is that a Sony Walkman on your desK?
Indeed it is! It was my first portable music player
I wonder if that's the effect I see in some people's moss, or grassy mounds.
Rodbotic It’s quite possible.
Damn your landscape photography is always 🔥
Video 550.004.675.456. 345.985.745. 345 on... Orton
Would you use it on water? Waterfall? Sand? A person in a landscape? :)
I just take a fog machine with me 😂
easy way to do this - get a Nikon D700!
Hahahha!
The easiest and cheapest way to blur the picture, is to use the nikon D40)
Id rather have better dynamic range than more pixels. My images are never going to be billboards. So megapixels are lost.
I'm way to lazy for all that Mark, I just use the Orton effect in Luminar 4
Feather...flow...same diff. 🤣
