  • Reading 2102 ran trips on the Blue Mountain & Reading's Perkiomen Branch between Emmaus and Pennsburg on the weekend of September 7-8, 1991. Hard to believe it's been that long since she ran.

      @@pennsy77 indeed as does the position of the whistle. When 2102 comes back out and the whistles are sideways they sound a bit different. Just as they did pointed forward and backwards depending the year on 614. Superheated just ruins it. Thats why the UP Hancock's sound so horrid compared to when they are saturated steam. That brings back fond memories! I did not ride this particular excursion, but I lived in the Upper Perkiomen Valley in the mid-80's and my interest in railroading was birthed on an excursion trip on this same line (ex-RDG Perkiomen branch between Pennsburg & Emmaus, using an "Anthracite Railway" SW-1 locomotive and BM&R coaches, in October of 1986--30 years ago almost to the day! Worked/volunteered for the BM&R as a part-time "car host" in 1987; later that year I got a full-time job with a railway, went to "Choo-Choo-U" in '88, took my promotion to Engineer in October of '88, and have been a hogger ever since.
    I was fortunate enough to have gotten a cab ride in 2102 during their "Santa Claus Special" in December of '88, but never had the pleasure to pull the throttle on that--or any steamer for that matter. Hopefully someday....

    I was on this trip. Last time I saw 2102 alive. This was one instance that we didn't have to drive out to Temple or South Hamburg to ride the BM&R, the BM&R came to us as Emmaus where we boarded is close to where we live. I have relatives in Emmaus, one of my deceased father's half brothers lives in Emmaus (the other one moved to Florida) and my father's mother passed earlier this year, she lived with her son in Emmaus for 10 years. In fact my uncle Dave was on this train with 2102 at South Hamburg in April 1988 when we rode. I only ride behind 2102 two times. My uncle Dave lives in Emmaus yet never ride any of the Emmaus BM&R trips with 2102 or 425.

    Could the Jim thorp round house even turn this giant.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  5 лет назад +4

      Despite tales that the Nickel Plate 759 "barely fit" on the turntable at Jim Thorpe when it was turned there, several photos exist which show it had a good 10 feet of open track in the front, and about 5 feet in the rear. Given that the wheelbase of a Reading T-1 is about 9 feet longer than a Nickel Plate Berkshire, it should definitely fit on the table, even if there is some overhang of the pilot and tender on the ends.

    • @steamgent4592
      @steamgent4592 4 года назад +1

      With the new bridge in place they have a wye or triangle to turn her on now so the turntable is redundant now even for 425 they can turn the entire train if they wish.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  8 лет назад

      It's a Reading passenger whistle as used on the G-3 Pacifics. They were used on the T-1s that ran in Rambles service. The "hooter" is a Reading freight whistle.

      Definitely only 1991 425 was getting her 5 year overhaul and returned in the 1992 season. Sadly October 1991 was 2102s final season. Next year will be 30 years since she felt the fire on her grates and pulled something.

      Thomas Koller The rail may look light, but it is 130lb or heavier. This line was a secondary through route for the Reading and got heavier rail than the true branch lines.

      The train was longer than the runaround. After the 2102 pulled onto the siding, 5308 pulled the coaches back to clear the switch so 2102 could reverse back onto the train.

      Zephyr4501 If you look closely there is one guy standing right beside the track right at the road crossing. I shot this wide so he wouldn't look too bad in my shot, but he screwed up the shot for a lot of the guys shooting stills. He was asked politely to move back in the photo line, he refused and got belligerent, and then all the shouting started. There's one in every crowd!

      OldsVistaCruiser from what I was told from someone who worked on the BM&R is the firemen knew how to make clear stack, white stack, and black stack. It was all up to the owner of the engine, if he wanted the full blown soot smoke that’s what he got. So that might’ve been on purpose.
