Deep Summer, very deep. That poem sends a great message. I just went to the UK from US for three weeks. I left children, grandchildren and great grand children and went away for myself.
I used to take one of my great grand daughters to school and pick her up, but I refused to let that stop me from traveling, so I told my grand daughter that I am going and I'm giving her three weeks to find a babysitter. She did and I went to England and enjoyed myself with friends and other relatives. This is one of the few times I went somewhere for me.
I always took care of everybody else, and pleased everybody else. Now, I say no, or I can't without feeling guilty.
It was all about my children and my family. Even my children noticed the change in me, and they are living it. In fact, they've paid my fare to London, and back and also gave me spending money. It's not a sin to do you after you have done all for your children. They love it when their mothers are happy. My children told me, I am not aging, but I am the one who sees the age because I moisterize my face and body, so I look fresh all the time. I am always smelling sweet. They buy all my expensive perfumes. All I need to do is eat right, exercise, take my vitamins, shower, and stay fresh everyday for me. It's a great feeling my dear Summer. I am living my best life and that does not cost a fortune.

    Dear Summer ,
I appreciate this presentation and insights you shared with us especially the Nigerian/African audience. Your words resonated with me , especially as I reflect on my experiences I’ve had raising my children. As an empty nester, I am now entering a new chapter in my life, and your wisdom on embracing this stage is timely and thought-provoking.
Thank you for all you do.

Now, 3 are married with my grandchildren, I even came back from babysitting yesterday, the good news is dat dis nearly 70 year old girl is living herself

You said it all! My kids are not adult but I strive everyday to let them know that one day they will be on their own and have their lives to live. It feels awkward but then it is true! We mothers always self sabotage ourselves for so many things. It is very critical to recognize and embed knowledge to our kids without loosing our sense of self. Thanks so much for sharing. I learn a lot from you.

You are absolutely correct Summer. Society deems women undeserving of life outside of motherhood and marriage. A woman is only afforded value if she is a wife and mother. A woman is nonexistent outside of those restrictive roles that have been conveniently carved into religion and culture! We are not allowed to live outside of those fences erected to prevent us from living boldly and fully. It is absolutely true that women are the ones frequently asked about their children. You have earned time by yourself Summer. You deserve to live for yourself, boldly, loudly and however you see fit.

I understand your points Summer. I will add this : There's time for everything and life is in phases. When children are still under aged, you owe them your presence and love.
In those phases of being an intentional and present parent, still create time for rest and rejuvenation.
Don't neglect your children when they need you to navigate thier parts in life.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Summer has paid her dues for about 25 years in the lives of her children. That's why she can trust them to carry on even in her absence.
Don't hide under the disguise of 'Self love and care ' to neglect your children or be selfish or irresponsible.

Infact, I am have been advising and encouraging my African friend to take a bold step out of abus@i@ve marriage of 22 years and all she is talking about is her children and her pets and I told that if she kpai now your children can still move on without and the children you are protecting will end being mentally and emotionally unstable due to prolonged abus@i@ve relationship and the children would suffer post traumatic stress disorder and childhood traumatic experiences. I am still supporting her through this awful experiences, but unfortunately it is an easy ride due to messed up reasonings ability. Once again thanks for sharing

Summer, some people are asking of your children out of spite, because you are looking well and doing fine and not particularly out of concern. Sadly jealousy is endemic in our people. Again well done for pointing these things out, we all have a life and once the kids are grown, our lives as parents has to continue whilst the children continue with there’s.

You are very on point on this issue of children finally leaving the nest.
My eldest is in her mid thirties and youngest twenty-two.
At the time the youngest left for the university, it hit me hard.
I was home alone most of the time.
That was when it dawned on me that just as I passed through other stages of my life, I was entering a new one, but becoming "SINGLE" again will require good planning. So I started by falling back to a lot of things I enjoyed doing before marriage in my spare time, that I have neglected because of family responsibilities. And it actually dawned on me that my happiness onward depends on the quality of life and attention I am prepared to give to myself for my time left here on earth.
So just like you said I am living my life first and foremost, planning and making time and resources available as needed. Also helping out with grand children when necessary.
I tell you, LIVING ON MY TERMS FOR ME HAS BEEN GREAT FUN TO GOD'S GLORY.
May God grant us wisdom. There are things we do not learn in school.

I was never around my parent and my parent were never around me and this began when i was around 8 years old when my mom left my dad, from that age i became lonely till i left home at the age of 15 ,to squat somewhere in the same area my dad house was and i never came eyeball with my day till i was over 30 years. Bottom line not been around my parent aloof me till date , i am almost 60yrs old , still aloof . I never pray any child goes through what i went through in life .

Thank you so much Summer for this wonderful lecture. I have made mistakes thinking the only that matters in life is raising up children well,I mean the best way I know it,loving, caring, protecting, providing even when it hurts, sacrifices made without thinking about the future, but now I am old and realised that it's not worth. Nothing to turn to,and nothing left to fall back on.But I appreciate your efforts to make women realise their mistakes and plan for themselves if God permits. Once again, thank you so much.

I have singlehandedly raised my 3 kids alone, and now I'm returning to Nigeria for me. They'll be alright at the end of the day. People wait for their kids to go into university before they make their move, I have decided to make my move even while they're in secondary and primary. I have given them a soft landing, which they can always come back to their place of birth for university while I'm living my life in my country where I feel living and not just existing. At least, I'll have time for them more in Nigeria than i do here. The children we are doing all these things for will still ask us someday why we didn't make our choice when you try to blame them for your own mistakes. So my sisters, as you're taking care of your children, don't forget to live. Please, Summer, I'll love to have a word with you privately if you don't mind. Please, how can I reach you? Kind regards

It has worsened and, I am now in bed unable to do anything for myself. Please ladies live before it is too late. It is 2am and, I cant sleep due to pain. Within 10 months, my body seems to have given up. I worked and worked, took care of everyone and everything. I am now paying the price. Every part of me is struggling to even get through the day. My kids help but it breaks my heart that life as I know, seems to have come to a stand still. If I have to it again, I would do exactly what summer has done. I was planning to relocate at the age of 60 and, had started making arrangements.

Thanks to God for I know there's someone from another tribe that's acting and reasoning the way I do.
I'm a mother of 4 boys and a comfortable married woman by his grace, people around me knows I like travelling with my hubby always and they always Ask me, mama miracle why you nor dey carry your boys along? my eldest son is 23 years of age 2nd is 21, 3rd is 15 and my last boy is 8 years of age.
Now my question is if I'm gone (died) can't the grown up boys look after the younger ones?
If the answer is yes, what makes the difference when I'm alive? After all my years and dedication looking and taking care of the grown up ones yet people still want me to still be taking my children along, like say I bring pekin when dey born me.
The children will live with or without our presence, we should do the needful when they're still younger and allow them to live their lives without us and let us ( parents) also live our lives to the fullest and enjoy before we exit from the planet earth 🌏

Some gen zs girls dont want that anymore or dont think it is valuable. I personally think it's not. People who b3come mothers should know what they are stepping into, but most don't women need to stop lying to themselves. Motherhood is forever, not a walk in the park till at least 30 to 40. You are still mothering nowadays du3 to the economy. Future mothers think about it before stepping into it. Same for marriage, aka unpaid work. Thanks.
