U r so spot on! And for Roy to mention Duke during his retirement speech shows the level of respect between the two programs! I may despise Carolina fans because not all, but some, have holier than thou attitudes, but I've never not had the utmost respect for Carolina's players (most) and their coaches! Kudos to Roy for a fantastic career! Die-hard Duke fan (but don't ever rub it in or tell people who they can or can't root for if it's not who I root for JS), but am blessed to be a fan of the greatest rivalry in amateur sports PERIOD! Enjoy retirement Roy, u've more than earned it

Pat I'm a die-hard Duke fan and that had to absolutely be the hardest thing he's ever had to do or would admit having to do! The fact he took that much responsibility shows his character and how much respect he has for not only Carolina but for the game in general! Not many would admit their not a fit anymore! I have always had nothing but the grandest admiration for Roy

As a 30 year Duke fan, I'm saddened to see Roy hang it up. He had a knack for taking a team that looked awful early in the season and turning them into title contenders come tournament time. It really feels like the glory days of college BB are long gone with all the transfer portals, one-and-done, and entitled players.

    • @bradlewis6514

u r so right J Hutch! There aren't anymore Roy's, Coach K's or Boeheim's out there either to be able to fill Mt Everest-type shoes! I've been a loyal Duke backer since I was in fourth grade back in '81-'82 when Duke was as bad as bad can get! Then of course came our iconically important '82 recruiting class! I've only ever had an issue with the UNC fan base but never their program except for a few players!

Coach,I am from Kansas, you and I talked several times ,as I had the priviledge of going to Allen every game. You amazed me and I as a youth coach, followed your lead .I respect you as one of the greats. I used to sit in front of Dick Harp, and he loved you too. I was able to observe your practices back when Ostertag was there because you allowed me to. My son later went on spring break with his buddy Brian Hill, who was a friend of your daughters and he told of your KU/NC trophy room. Wanda treated my son as a king. Long and short, You are a great man and I want to give you my best wishes and your well deserved retirement. Thank you sir.

I grew up in the DMV with a Dad who went to Duke. He would always push back against Maryland being their rival, but that is how it felt growing up. Roy changed that. He brought UNC back to what it should be. Carolina, Kentucky, and UCLA are the truly iconic programs in college basketball, and the others will forever chase. Didn't root for him, but nothing but respect for what Roy did and the man he was throughout.

Could not have changed his mind. To see him sit there and talk about the mistakes he made and not have someone
Stand up and say “ are you kidding me Roy”!
3 national championships and countless other honors. More importantly the way he treats players and changes
Lives. You are both the right man.? You are the only man!!

He should be so proud of himself. I pray he enjoys his retirement and lives out his years with joy and making new memories in life. Bob Frederick was the long time athletic director at Kansas (he was who Dean requested take the shot hiring Roy during the 1988 off-season)! Frederick and Roy grew to be extremely tight friends and not just co-workers! It was during the period after the 2002 season and preceding 2002-03 that Bob Frederick announced he was stepping down as KU's athletic director! It's known that once Frederick made his decision that Roy began to re-evaluate! Also known is that as the 2002-03 season progressed, the relationship between Williams and Frederick's replacement was frosty at best and grew contentious from there! Plus the recruiting class he committed to originally staying with was exiting (Henrich and Collision were graduating and Gooden had left after the previous season)! Those became two main factors in Roy's decision! So it wasn't just Dean wanting him back, although that was extremely important! But he absolutely did not get along with the newly hired Kansas AD at the time of his leaving Lawrence

And btw he did an otherworldly job at both schools considering both instances he stepped into! Kansas and Carolina's state of programs we're both at a tipping point! What he got both schools out of, to me, we're his greatest achievements, not the wins

I know how he feels...I coached a high school sport for 22 years. Loved it...missed every family function for it...practiced on every holiday for it. I still love the sport, but my last year coaching I loathed every minute of every practice. I don't want to blame it on the kids, but kids are not the same they were 15-20 years ago. They would measure their efforts instead of giving their all. Kids started playing seasonal sports all year round. I tried to talk to the AD about getting back to "School Sports", where your great athletes played 3 sports for their high school. Footballers would wrestle and play basketball, then track or baseball in the spring. Girls would go from soccer/volleyball/XC to basketball/swimming then softball/track. Those kids are gone.

Roy isn’t claiming that his abilities are no longer “right” for the job. He’s saying that he’s no longer the right man for the job because he can’t go through to the new generation of college athletes. Hence the “opting out” comment in the opening minutes. College athletes are different now. Better or worse, that depends on who you are. But for a man with a team-first and a do-what-it-takes-to-win mindset, I’m sure Roy would privately say these times are not better.

@@mauricelovell7173 It's Carolina... It's the best college basketball job in the country. It's one of the best coaching jobs in ALL of American sport. ANY coach in the country would pick up the phone if UNC called. And only a handful of guys would even consider turning the job down if it was offered to them...
Maybe a Hubert Davis or a Wes Miller are a revelation, and they coach UNC for 30 years and win a ton of games... Or maybe they turn out to be Matt Doherty (he's what happened the last time Carolina decided they had to "keep it in the family"...).
If you're the AD, you have to at least pick up the phone and call a Jay Wright or a Brad Stevens.

Don't you love to see a multi-million aire cry.
He's made so much money from coaching. He recently gave UNC 2 million dollars.
You've really got to be rich to be able to give that much away.
    I think I'd cry too.

That is the only rub against UNC, which I always called Fraudulina, for never being penalized for those gross infractions. However, I never thought it was anything orchestrated by Roy. He was always a class guy, and gracious in losing. He did the same after they lost to WI badly in the first round this tear - took time to personally congratulate each Badger! Like Coach K, he understood the essence of coaching - it is about molding men, not just about winning games & titles.

Roy caught a lot of slack this year because of him enforcing all these crazy mask requirements.
Whilst most of the students knew it was bull shit science. Roy didn't question it. As long as a Democrat says it's so. He's gonna belive it, cuz he's gullable.

Roy did what he did to ensure that we still had a season to play. While I agree the virus is political bs, Politics have nothing to do with it. They could have canceled games like so.many other programs did yet he followed the protocols to give the fans and his players a season. Regardless to how you feel about the Politics, This isn't the place for it.
