Some anime recommendations if you want good movies/shows that just happen to be anime are Perfect Blue, Monster, Erased, Violet Evergarden, Your Name, and pretty much anything made by Studio Ghibli.

I'm a big fan of Steins;Gate if you want a short self-contained anime. The original Trigun is also a lot of fun. And Ouran High School Host Club is wonderful if you like rom-coms.
