      The problem with Odysee currently is it is dominated by right wing Americans, which makes it seem like a political platform. It will need a much wider diversity of views to make headway with the general public. Still, if I were to make a channel I'd probably mirror it there. If they can ‘moderate’ some specific types of content, what’s to stop them from censorship in the future?

    • @zdrux
      @zdrux 3 года назад +47

      They can only moderate what's seen on their Odysee website.. which is obvious enough any web owner can do. But they still can't censor what's on the LBRY blockchain. Technically you can write your own web front-end and still stream the video.
      The Odysee website is only a graphical interface to the LBRY blockchain.

    • @KR-ff4tu

      @@zdrux Isn’t that the equivalent of saying “Google can only moderate what’s on RUclips’s servers, but can’t censor what’s on the internet. A content creator can technically write their own front-end and stream their video”?
      The content creator doesn’t then have as large of an audience pool.
      Where I’m getting at is it doesn’t necessarily solve the issue of undue censorship. What needs addressing is the accountability of the moderating party.

      @@KR-ff4tu Maybe to make things a little clearer....Odysee was created by the same people who created LBRY. In fact, up until very recently, Odysee was under the same company banner as LBRY. LBRY was created by free speech fanatics, and although Odysee DOES have a community guidelines, enforcement is based on what Odysee cares to enforce, and I'm pretty confident they're not going to censor anything unless it actually border on breaking the law.

    • @KR-ff4tu
      @KR-ff4tu 3 года назад +12

      @@thinkoutsidethecontainer So essentially you would still need to ‘trust’ a human party to not censor content, regardless of what their beliefs are. • @imtiaz6332
      @imtiaz6332 3 года назад +28

      @@KR-ff4tu Its possible for anyone who knows how to code to create a website that has all the videos in odysee + the content censored by odysee. Content censored by odysee don't vanish from the Internet. They just vanish from odysee. This is because odysee shows content from LBRY and people upload to LBRY. So the content exist on LBRY. Its very likely if odysee gains popularity, someone will come up with an uncensored version of it.
      The difference between your analogy and what odysee is doing is, when youtube censors videos, they're gone from the internet (unless someone saves it and re-upload it) but when odysee censors it, it's still accessible. Just not directly from odysee.

    Apart from the backend technology the main difference is the monitization process, which is very interesting indeed. However the big issue is the search. On the other hand as utube changes its search algorithm more and more to direct traffic where it wants to go, that utube benefit will be gone. The analytics is a minor issue from a practical point of view, but from an emotional point of view it’s a big issue. It’s my main grip with Bitchute.

  • @AlexBooster
    @AlexBooster 2 года назад +3

    If you do a basic back-of-the-envelope calculation (which is something I actually did), you'll realize that if something like Odysse were to get even just one-FIFTH of RUclips's traffic, the whole thing will crash and burn and collapse. It's simply *NOT feasible* on a scale that's even close to the scale of RUclips. On a small scale, it's OK but won't work on a large scale. Why?
    Because:
    1) The hard drive space that would be required of every user participating in this is astronomical (video files are LARGE). So, every user on that network would HAVE to have a bunch of high-capacity hard drives dedicated to this and running 24/7. So, every user would have to PAY a significant amount for hardware and electricity costs.
    2) The personal internet connection of every user hosting the files would slow down to a crawl.
    Summary: As soon as this network starts getting close to 1-2% of RUclips's traffic and/or overall data storage size, people in the network will stop participating because they'll realize that the few cents they are getting paid don't even come close to justifying the hassle and the problems.
    Keep in mind: Until very recently RUclips has been operating at a LOSS. That's right, RUclips as a company running this service has actually been losing large amounts of money for YEARS. It exists only because Google has been covering those losses.

    What's the point of using a blockchain library to make it, if it is just another centralized app that also moderates content. For a user, isn't this similar to any other centralized video sharing service with lax content moderation policies?
    Seems like the only real difference is the content moderation policy, which even Odysee can change any time it wants. Even RUclips didn't have such strict policies earlier, but due to pressure from the users and the government, they had to implement those.

    Have you guys heard of the THETA ecosystem? The THETA network does all of the above. Not a big fan of the LBRY blockchain, plus they are on SEC's naughty list. Additionally, and this is just my opinion. But I strongly believe that when we are talking about CDN's, a PoS over PoW mechanism will be the best bet going forward. PoW present limitations in scalability that would eventually need to be overcome(cough...cough ETH). The THETA blockchain, unlike the LBRY blockchain, uses PoS - a better alternative in my opinion for revolutionizing CDN's.

    I was wondering if the network could simply have private viewing options for videos. Do they have abilities for live streaming, or have optional other multimedia content? I think there is different possibilities to view your own private video collections online without paying exorbitant fees to store. But, I do expect the network to eventually breakdown due to many difficulties most other media companies face over the years, so, I'm not hopeful that it will be successful a decade from now. Since, I expect restrictions and regulations will impede growth, usage, and other control issues.

  • @firefly618
    @firefly618 2 года назад +3

    Thank you for the explanation! Your videos are very helpful!
    As for the topic at hand, if I understand correctly, the LBRY network could be used to index very illegal material (like dunno, CP) and sell it for profit to "customers", and nobody would be able to remove that material's metadata from the network. Nice. While at the same time, the Odysee frontend runs their own censorship logic and may (will) bow down to various interests over time as it sees fit. Nice. And the company running the thing (which takes a 10% cut of all new coins?) is based in the US and is being bonked by the SEC. All in all, I'm not impressed.

    • @pointblank2890
      @pointblank2890 2 года назад +1

      From what I understand it, Odysee can "remove" content like CP, torture videos, animal cruelty vids, and other stuff from their indexing platform, but that content is still hosted somewhere, like a torrent. All it takes in an avenue to access that dormant video and it can be accessed again.
      But yeah, the biggest thing going against it is that the company running it is based in the U.S. You can shout free speech no censorship all you want but if some judge is looming over you with a possible 40 million dollar fine or some shady individuals have you strung upside down with a pipe wrench in their hand, its gonna be a bit harder to stand by that

  • @roboburr

    so, Odesee, a centralised entity runs on a decentralised database if I'm right? This means the content on the platform gets decided by the people running the service.
    it's seems to be about trust and what media company do we choose to trust.
    because I think running a full decentralised video service without a centralised entity is not going to work.
