I met this man (purely by accident) circa 1973 in down-town Chicago. I found him to be very polite and intelligent. When I discover his body of work, sometime later, I was shocked (and still am) on recalling how he demonstrated such a pure sense of humility around me. 50+ years later, I'm still very impressed by his unassuming demeanor.
Wonderful piece - I learned a great deal about this talented man whose performances have delighted me for many years. My only confusion is the reference to his film characters wearing a “perpetual grin”. Huh? The photos of him here smiling were largely of him offscreen, but as far as his film characterizations, I recall his slack-jawed deadpan expression, and have no memory of ever seeing him grin in a movie! Smiling or not, he was a very gifted comic actor. Made me laugh more than once! Thanks for this video.
