▶ABOUT US◀
Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships. We're also "cryptic crossword" aficionados. Mark is the twelve-time winner of The Times championship and Simon is the former record holder for most consecutive correct solutions to The Listener crossword. We hope we can help your puzzle solving while also introducing you to some of the world's best puzzles.
Thank you for watching!
Simon and Mark
lots of people comment on these videos about how they can't do them because english isn't their first language. don't worry, english is my first (and pretty much only) language and i can't do them either
I always understand the logic when I watch these, but put a cryptic crossword in front of me and I will be lucky to get one or two words.
Anifco67 It seems that English language setters dominate the cryptic crossword scene. For other languages though, these videos are even less helpful because both the basic vocabulary and the wordplay would be incomprehensible.
Mark was so slow that in some cases I’d read the whole clue before he’d put in the answer and moved on
Great extra content and very much appreciated
Watching these I always get the feeling Mark's just filling in random words, but somehow miraculously they fit in every time.
Well , if you think he fills in random words you are better than I am.
For me it looks like he just fills in random gibberish that resembles words :)
Simon's origin story from the discord:
The actual CTC Pitch meeting (and this is close to verbatim):
Simon: Baggins, it’s me.
Mark: I know, Doofus. What do you want?
Simon: I’ve had a brilliant idea.
Mark: Is this like one of Baldrick’s cunning plans?
Simon: No sire, this is the real deal. We start a RUclips channel where we solve that day’s Times crossword.
Mark: What’s RUclips?
[Some time later….]
Simon: So what do you think?
Mark: It’s better than your usual ideas. It’s especially better than the one about mobile toast stalls and the one where you started a chain of salons dedicated to “finger drawing on people’s backs”. But it’s still rubbish - it has less than a 1% chance of ever having any success.
Simon: No it’s not. You just don’t understand. And you have to do some of the videos.
Mark: What’s a video?
Excellent 👍👍👍 A real privilege to watch the best in the world demonstrate his astonishing talent.
"A 9-letter anagram is approachable" ... is it, though??
Crossword solve videos are great!
I’m so fascinated about these cryptics. As someone who doesn’t have English as their first language these are extremely hard for me. I’m starting to get the logic after watching you solve a lot of them but I still can’t finish these puzzles. Sudoku is much easier lol!
This speed run is amazing to watch! Great job, so glad you decided to upload this as a bonus after publishing the other video at the “wrong” 11 ;D
I get that solving cryptics comes with practice. But come on, I had to google colonel blimp - it's a comic strip from the 1930's. How is anyone supposed to know that!
I guess I'm not a fan of the times crossword, as it's very UK-centric, and many clues expect you to know things that you wouldn't outside the UK. I'm only in Ireland, english is my first language, and yet it still seems inscrutable to an extent.
You've got to be quite British indeed to know "tip it down" means heavy rain
Absolute sterling stuff, I bought the chambers crossword manual at the start of lockdown and have been fascinated with cryptics ever since. Im down to 15 mins ish as a standard. This performance however is platinum level and something to aim for.
managed to get one or two before you to my great surprise! but amazed by the speed on show here. it’s like you have a sixth sense for divining how the wordplay works at a glance, as well as knowing exactly what short synonym will end up in the answer!
this is like a whole another language
Cryptic crossword CAN! WE! SOLVE! IT! Cryptic crossword YES! WE! CAN! (sung to Bob the Builder)
I really like watching you speedsolve.
As someone who solves the Times crossword every day, I get pretty much all of the references - but the speed of the solve is just phenomenal. Even on rewinding a couple of times, I struggled to work out the solution path. Chapeau to you Mark
I saw a 4 letter clue (#8), and paused the video while I gave it a try. After 10 minutes, I unpaused the video and realized that I am not good at this at all.
The really short clues can be trickier because they don't give you much to go on.
3 videos and 4 puzzles. Today is a great day!
Aaah finally another cryptic xword, thank you.
Don't get me wrogn. I'm a great fan of Sting. Always have been. But I have a working hypothesis as to why he never got back to Mark with the Xword Challenge. :)
As a non-native English speaker I watch and don't understand anything.
I can second this, I actually hadn't thought I was that bad in English, but that was before I've encountered one of these cryptic beasts.
Don't worry! I am a native English speaker and I can only just understand what is going on with these, I cannot do them myself at all though! 😅
Mind blown!!
I'd love to see cryptic crosswords more frequently on this channel. You could even slow the solve down a bit to fully appreciate the logic that goes into it.
Glad to hear you've been vaccinated! Be safe, Mark. It is always a pleasure to see you solving crosswords. Cheers.
26 of 198!?
I got "Ate ones Hat", but nothing else. "Iambi" made me laugh though.
Woahh these 11pm videos were originally meant as a bonus themselves! Are we on day 300 by now? lol
Yeah they only started doing two a day once lockdown started
I got ate one's hat immediately. The rest I understood, but obviously couldn't beat Mark to the punch. I reckon it would be difficult to do it that quickly if you solved it and then solved it again on video from memory.
Fascinating to watch, downright awe-inspiring. Your mind unhinges over the crossword like the jaws of a snake devouring a turkey egg whole.
🤩
Bonus video!
There are two old quotes which describe the quick cryptic solver.
He solves the Times crossword in the cracking of his breakfast egg. (I think in one of the Rumpole stories describing a judge)
He finishes the Times crossword in the time it takes for his pen to travel across it. (Referring to Arthur Eddington)
I think Mark would qualify for both the quotes. Though the Times crossword has changed since the days when they were full of Shakespeare and Lewis Carroll quotes.
Just to be sure is this a bonus video or does it replace the normal sudoku video?
I don’t understand this game
I also didn't like the Tripartite clue, as Triskele is already the proper terminology for a three-armed symbol like that on the Isle of Man's flag
IoM flag is three legs, isn't it?
tripartite is an adjective meaning "in three parts". the definition in the clue is "Man's symbol is such" which is accurate!
A slower video we could actually play along with would be much preferable. I couldn't even read the clues before they were solved, let alone consider a solution.
