Max Roach is a drummer that really excelled at making his drums talk. Of all the drummers I listen to, Max gets my vote for "King of the Talking Drums".
I;d consider myself a beginner when it comes to playing and understanding jazz, but on Out To Lunch, I can't help but feel like Tony WIlliams is really letting his drums get in on the fun. There's a lot of call and response between the drums and other instruments on that record, and it makes for an excellent conversation :)
For me, Tony Williams’ solo in his “Live in New York” video is about my favorite “talking drums” moment (somewhere he and Max Roach must be smiling at Q’s lesson!)

I clearly remember the first time I really heard a drummer “speak” through drums. I was listening to 4 & More for the first time and it was Tony’s solo on Four. Even though it was complicated linear playing, it was SO conversational.
I talk to just about everything so yes, my drums too, I just want them to talk back to me. This vid is proof positive that drumming is intuitive to an extent. Tip #6 yes❗️love your work‼️

I go back away. When you say melodic, I think of Joe Morello. And, I think of a lesser known album, “Jazz Impressions of Japan.” Not necessarily a melodist, but Connie Kay is on of the great colorists in jazz. There is yeoman player who is not as well known as he should be, Ronnie Bedford. He is also a very melodic soloist. He is on a Buddy DeFranco album which is stellar, Mr. Lucky. Another great drummer is Frankie Dunlop. Glad you mentioned him!!

There was always music playing since mum liked jazz so I grew up with Art Blakey, Pappa Joe, Philly ,Joe Morello, Tony Williams, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Jack De J to name a few. Later Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Peter Erskin, Simon Phillips as I got into fusion. I am really into Latin drums & perc, now...that's another list.....

I’ve been listening to a lot of Greg Hutchinson, Art Taylor, and Jimmy Cobb(as always). Here’s a question that came to my mind during a gig this past weekend…on some tunes I feathered the bass almost throughout, on others I did more of a conversational thing between the snare and bass drum. Are there any guidelines you follow regarding when to feather and when not to feather?
"Plays drums, plays bass or driving cars" haha i wasn't expecting that last one😂 I like it when I can jusr hear the phrasing, not the patterns, rudiments or chops (even if they happen to be there) Oh man, Paul Motian, Joey Baron, Nasheet Waits, Jim Black, Brian Blade, Tom Rainey, then you got your Marcus Gilmore, Tyshawn Sorey, then you have those playing with Immanuel Wilkins and Joel Ross who are all just beasts!

Some of my favorite "expressionist" drummers are definitely Billy Cobham, Phil Collins (mainly his early work), Mark Craney (à la Imaginary Voyage - Jean-Luc Pointy), Steve Smith, and Narada Michael Walden. Definitely drummers I listen to a lot, all of whom have severely impacted my playing.
So many...a lot of them already called out here. I'd say Philly Joe Jones (my fave), Ed Thigpen, Brian Blade, Carl Allen, Tony Williams, Paul Motian, Peter Erskine, Bill Stewart, and a bunch more. I'm a sax/keys player, but am trying to pick up some drum chops to be a more complete musician. Thanks for making these.
Ok, Mr. Q. My favorite drummer is Mr. Brian Blade. He draws me in and "never" let's me go. I get to see this magic, via the Norah Jones live at Ronnie Scotts Bluray DVD format.
Dave Weckl used to trip me out when he played with Akoustic Band, the way he'd make his music sound like a long, gentle roll over several drums and cymbals together.
Awesome tips, love the singing while comping. I'm always trying to audiate in my head what I'm improvising but actually singing it is something I haven't tried. So many drummers to list that make the drums speak! One you may or may not be familiar with is Swedish guru Morgan Agren, I love his style and "stream of consciousness" approach to soloing.
In answer to your question there are Many. But my two favorites would have to be Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. As of current Elvin has consumed most of my attention just because he’s so unorthodox and different in many ways. I love how he puts his entire body into it and leaves tons of space. But I love em all. 🥁👈🏼☮️

You’re right! Never noticed. That’s mainly because I’m usually talking about true jazz drummers. I consider him more of a fusion drummer. Be he’s great! He’s one of my early influences for sure.

Thank you so much for these videos, I am working on them every week and I think they are really helping my playing.I have mainly played different forms of rock and blues the last 30 years or so and never really took many solos until a couple of years ago, so these ideas are really great.The drummers I find great inspiration from are Herlin Riley, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore, Shannon Powell and Brian Blade, I think they all have some common threads maybe?

I think music in general is a vocal/verbal effort by humans (and maybe some animals but anyhow...). When it's really good it *says* something to us right? We hear that lick, that riff, that groove, that reprise etc. and we're like "Huh? Say THAT again!" I like playing my practice pad, just accents and ghost notes, with vocalists. Rap has a lot right opportunities right away (E-40, 50 Cent are a ton of fun to practice with), but even with something like Bob Dylan you find crazy subdivisions and off-the-one entries, stuff like that. Just hit annunciations with an accent, and otherwise play ghost notes, rest between words. It's a real joy.

I think music in general is a vocal/verbal effort by humans (and maybe some animals but anyhow...). When it's really good it *says* something to us right? We hear that lick, that riff, that groove, that reprise etc. and we're like "Huh? Say THAT again!"
I like playing my practice pad, just accents and ghost notes, with vocalists. Rap has a lot right opportunities right away (E-40, 50 Cent are a ton of fun to practice with), but even with something like Bob Dylan you find crazy subdivisions and off-the-one entries, stuff like that. Just hit annunciations with an accent, and otherwise play ghost notes, rest between words. It's a real joy.
