Bevercotes Colliery & the Disused Railway Walk & Explore
Join me as i pay a visit to the former site of Bevercotes Colliery in North Nottinghamshire.
Once the UKs first automated pit, little to nothing remains. Then it's onto the former trackbed off towards Boughton Junction on the former Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway now part of Network Rails High Marnham Test Track facility.
Bridges, relics & a tunnel shall meet us on our journey.

Did this walk back in 2021 and then again today (17/11/2023). What a difference...and not in a good way! Had to abandon it because it's too overgrown and almost impassible in places. There are now many large sections of very thorny brambles which are just too difficult to get through. I might try it again in the depths of winter when hopefully a lot of it will have died back. Not holding out much hope though because even if some of it dies back it's still accumulating year on year. I suspect in a few more years this former line will be almost invisible let alone walkable...very sad. On a positive note...you can park up at Bevercotes colliery and walk around what's left of the site which is well worth doing. The place is quite eerie and has an apocalyptic feel to it.

What an unusual set-up, the lineside huts on the river bridge. Seems like a strange way to do it; maybe saved buying a tiny bit of land for the huts but made the bridge somewhat more complicated.👍😁 Lovely morning for a walk too.👌

The 45 tonnes is likely the maximum design weight for the bridge. The standard for road bridges (I should I say bridges carrying roads) is to be able to carry a vehicle weighing a maximum of 44 tonnes. Since the heaviest standard load a vehicle can be is 44 tonnes.

this was incredible to watch... so much history in a place that's pratically in the middle of nowhere.... they said on a calm night... if you listen hard enough you can hear the trains trundling down the rails carrying their heavy loads to their destionations..... or so the saying goes... also what was the music used during the section where you walked underneath the b road at 22.12.. im curious because it fits the atmosphere so well

Considering how important coal mining was to the economy for absolutely ages it's a shame hardly anything remains of it. Of the two pits you featured all that remains is a car park and a vast empty space. I'd like them to preserve more, although I appreciate there isn't much that can be done with the remains.

I think I’ve said this before but this particular route is still owned by Network Rail. When they decide to sell it it’ll be valued and go to an estate agent who will market it (as they did for the Welbeck pit line recently). A local authority could buy it and convert it if they could afford to. We looked at the Welbeck one (I work for a district council) but the money just wasn’t there to do it. Plus it doesn’t go anywhere that anyone would want to cycle!

Words like “interesting”, “informative”, “entertaining”, “enjoyable”, “impressive tunnel photography” (hmm, that’s three words), “superb drone footage”, “brilliant music choices” and all-round “high production values”. For info, planning permission was granted around 10 years ago to redevelop the Bevercotes colliery site as Vertical Park, a warehouse distribution centre. Some pics and brochure at www.gladman.co.uk/industrial-space-bevercotes.php. Oh, and the title of this video is incorrect. It should of course be “walk, explore & fall” :-)
