My dad worked at 'ET' (used to remember him going to work and coming home at a different time each week ("swing shift') and our neighbor at Union RR. One of my finest memories as a little kid - maybe 5 or 6 - watching a train coming by pulling a line of dozens of cars with wheels screeching on rails. My dad told me to wave to the motorman ... and he waved back! Cannot explain that feeling for a little kid - you never forget it.
Or going through Braddock seeing clouds of orange smoke from the mill going 'full blast' and the huge piles of raw materials - scrap metal, etc. ready to be fed into the furnace, or driving by the East Pittsburgh Westinghouse factory when there was a shift change with 100s of workers walking by - the plant was so large you could not see its end - seemed to be infinite in size.
There were also times when the mills shut down - a strike or whatever - and he tore down buildings in Braddock to make ends meet - and got the lumber and windows to make our summer home in Clearfield county for next to nothing. But the mills paid well - helped my sister and me go through graduate schools and get a good start on the life he never had.
There was an age in Pittsburgh when it was the domain of giants - WW II vets building a nation. It breaks my heart to see it today, but am grateful for what remains ... and memories...

I miss this railroad. I lived in Fox Hills Monroeville...and this line was actually on the same street and parallels the road. When these trains are headed up the hill...they ROAR and you hear them from miles and miles away.

This railroading takes you back in time. I could imagine it was 40 to 60 yrs ago. The scenery is amazing.

Great video!!!! like those switchers!!!! Moving all that weight, why wouldn't the operation use larger locomotives?

@3:04 that joint bar looks like it is going to split! I bet it did. It is so nice that you film the Edgar Thompson works. Who knows how long that will be around. I wish we had more films of the J&L Steel mills of Pittsburgh&Aliquippa to watch. They are now, like this will be soon, historic. Thank you! 🚂🚂🚂🚂

Nice grade, looks to be about 4 % or better. Great video of 3 SW-1500's in action, with a total HP of about 4,500. Cheers from eastern TN

They have 5 engines because the MP15s don’t exactly have very much horsepower and the cabooses are for all of the back up moves they do

Very nice slice of life video showcasing a working railroad and heavy industry. Sights (and sites) like this used be very common in industrial belts across North America and Europe before deindustrialization policies took hold in the 1980s. Interesting that UR still uses caboose-like cars in their trains. Is it a cab car that can control the train or does it have another function? Thanks for sharing!

Ive loaded those B&LE cars at one time while working the ore dock tower in Conneaut Harbor, Ohio for the P& C Dock Co. Now part of Canadian National Railway.. I've also switched out and parked those loaded ore hopper cars for the b&le road crew to eventually bring down to North Bessemer to the Union railroad for steel mill delivery.

Phenomenal video...my favorite area. I model this area most valuable information. Rotating amber beacons on #15 #19 #12 Question can you provide information on the Coke Express hoppers ? Thanks in advanced. Worth watching over and over again

    • @tomt9543
      @tomt9543 3 года назад

Pretty sure they were just high sided hoppers, and the “Coke Express” lettering was just a marketing device. Since coke weighs so much less than coal, they can haul a lot more of it without going over the weight limit of the car. That’s why the Express cars are so much taller. That name is similar to Southern Railways “Big John” aluminum covered hoppers in the 1960’s. A marketing gimmick!

Nice video, I enjoyed it very much.
I noticed a man in the lead engine and one on the caboose.
I also noticed the remote lights on the engines.
Who is the one controlling the train?
I think I seen a waist harness controller on the guy in the caboose.
Does the guy in the caboose, control the train, when it's caboose forward. Then the guy in the lead unit control when that's in front?
    The wonders of railroading.
Great to see this aspect of it, besides all the mainline stuff.
