- Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997 under a promise of autonomy for 50 years. That year, 59,250 babies were born in the city. Now at 23, five people of Hong Kong's handover generation embark on individual journeys to pursue dreams, love and careers. In a period of turbulence, each through their own way, they strive to build a better future for themselves and the city they call home.
Set amidst key political events occurring 23 years after the handover, in 2020, this documentary is an intimate and revealing portrait of Hong Kong's youth as they grapple with change sweeping across their city, and their lives.
This 52-minute extended cut includes new scenes that did not make it to the TV version because of runtime requirements. They reveal added dimensions about these Hong Kongers and further celebrate the quirks and complexities of their individual stories.

One issue I fear for HK post 2047 is if Cantonese was to become a 2nd language. I really hope not.
@@DavidHoughton17 That’s is a unstoppable trend cuz HongKong belongs to China and they interact more with Chinese. You can’t promise all Chinese can speak Cantonese so you must learn Mandarin even for your job. Maybe we can slow the trend but can’t stop it. Many new generation Chinese have can’t speak the local dialect.Not sure bad or good, but it’s the trend.

Hong Kong has had one of its economic miracles being one of the 4 Asian little dragons.
China CCP had performed possibly, the BIGGEST economic miracle in human history to have lifted over 600 million people from poverty and transformed its economy to become the second largest in the world in less than 40 years.
Logically, there is STRONG evidence and reason to believe that China working with Hong Kong will and can deliver GREAT results for Hong Kong and make Hong Kong great again.
However, unfortunately, there are many, especially young people in Hong Kong do NOT want China's involvement in Hong Kong even to the extent that they promoted their idea of rather having Hong Kong die economically than to work with China. That's called “Naam Chau”, meaning die together.
Why?
Some Hong Kong people blame Mainland Chinese for EVERYTHING.
Those Hong Kong people, from before 1997 and a few years after 1997, felt they were SUPERIOR to Mainland Chinese due to the earlier economic development of Hong Kong than Mainland China. They felt Mainland Chinese were their poor and silly relatives across the border and didn't think highly of them.
Hong Kong, from 1997 to 2003, suffered one of the MOST serious economic depressions in its 150 years history due to the broke out of the Asian Economic Crisis in 1997. Housing prices dropped over 70% and stock market dropped to historical lows. During that same time, China was developing VERY quickly and MANY Mainland Chinese started to get rich and VERY rich.
SARS hit Hong Kong during early 2003 and further devastated the Hong Kong economy and the livelihoods of Hong Kong people. After SARS, in order to help revive Hong Kong economy, the Central government in Beijing approved Chinese tourists visiting Hong Kong with a much simplified visa, causing millions of Mainlanders to visit Hong Kong and to shop at LOWER prices in Hong Kong as there was ZERO tax and duties in Hong Kong as free trade port. Hong Kong's economy in a very short time was REVIVED with the new found spending powers of millions of Mainland Chinese going to Hong Kong every month.The downside of this incoming Chinese tourists was that MANY Hong Kong people who used to despise and look down on Mainland Chinese, had to face the reality that SOME are MUCH richer and smarter than them.
As usual, when economies did well, prices went up. Prices of Housing, stock market, products of daily use ALL went up and went up SIGNIFICANTLY. More and more smart and hardworking Mainland Chinese studied in Hong Kong or overseas were getting better jobs in Hong Kong and with better pays than Hong Kong people due to their higher caliber. Hong Kong people were LOSING OUT BIG TIME and were forced to face the reality that they were WORSE OFF, at least to those Mainland Chinese who could afford to visit and work in Hong Kong. That caused unrepairable damages to MANY who felt any superiority over Mainland Chinese.
Many Hong Kong people, especially those young ones, had witnessed the improving economy but that only benefited the richer and smarter ones and they themselves suffered DECLINING standards of living. The anger and resentment grew BIGGER as Hong Kong depended on Mainland China more and more and MANY Hong Kong young people were just NOT competitive enough in the freest and most capitalistic city in the world.
Therefore, some Hong Kong “scholars” and opinion leaders over the years INVENTED a story for the youngsters that in Hong Kong things WERE much better during British colonial rule than after returned to China in 1997. Resentment, angers, frustrations, ignorance GREATLY built up among Hong Kong young people and they wanted to overthrow the Hong Kong government and reduced the influence of Chinese central government on Hong Kong. They wanted to make DRASTIC CHANGES to Hong Kong to “improve” Hong Kong in the names of freedom, human rights and democracy. As a matter of fact, most youngsters who believed this “story” were born AFTER 1997 and had NEVER lived a single day during British colonial rule.
Some, especially young people, in Hong Kong believed the story that things WERE much better before 1997 and China was responsible for making their lives difficult. Therefore, they viewed UK and USA as their HELP and SAVIOR to hope to seek assistance and support from them to overthrow Hong Kong and Chinese governments for their “DREAMLAND” to occur in Hong Kong under WESTERN influence and control.
In conclusion, it is VERY UNLIKELY Hong Kong will be great again having declining quality of people, especially young ones, and resisting the support and cooperation from China, the MOST dynamic economic powerhouse of the world.

CCP wants HK to do well also BUT CCP is more interested in bringing HK in to be part of the mainland since the 2 systems thing cannot go on without resentment from the mainland people. In other words, a country cannot have 2 different classes of citizens with different degrees of freedom.
Yes, HK will be just another important tier 1 city of China and as China continues to develop HK will become a smaller part of the whole economy while the rest of the country catches up.
HK should count its blessing and should enjoy what is left for the remaining 27 years.

As someone who lived through the British and Chinese ruled Government in Hong Kong and experienced the good and bad in both eras, it is such an irony to hear those who missed the colonel time the most were born after the handover. Its so pathetic for those who judge without knowing!
Colonial HK is less remember the better because it happen at a time of great misery and poverty in southern China. Most of my relatives in southern China died of starvations because they were nationalist supporters that gave their gold to support a revolution against imperial and colonial rule. My parents went from imperial rule to colonial rule when they fled communist China in 1950 . I understand communism and nationalism but since the nationalist government KMT left China and giving communist Mao the mainland and southern China . Like all political parties at that time be it colonial or imperial rule, being on the wrong side has cost lives and poverty.

@Mr. HeavyDebater many were brainwashed during the British colonial times, up till the current generation of HK young people. Most of them were too young to remember or never had the experience living under colonial times. I bet they have not been the receiving end of racism for a lot of Chinese descended abroads (I have and my country has been colonised by the same western power before), but they're young and naive and stuck to their romantices fervor. Like that girl who went to the interview and refused to go mainland (I bet she don't know many cities in mainland has overtaken HK)..

HK's success was not the because of China, it was by proxy of history. During the mainland Civilwar, many like minded individuals fled to HK to avoid the fighting. At the time HK was left to exist on its own, while the new government was being built. Yes it was poverish, and sort of a useless location to have during the war. This how ever changed greatly. HK having international ties, a majority of the Chinese wealthy, entrenpeurnarial, and future minded after the war, decided to focus on industrialization as a to make money. Cheap labor provided to foreign countries.
Mainland economy was built on food trade. This was the major player in HK and China economics. China had nothing to offer besides food, at the time it was the only important thing and kept inflation low. HK needed the food chain provided, and was able to return its accrued revenue from foreign players. It is funny to note, because HK had autonomy they were able to create a create multiple small enterprises instead of one controlling force. That means the only rason they were able to get so much work from around the world was because they were able to adapt to trends and needs. China could not do that at all.
The Chinese government did not engage in any type of planning or control of HK. This is when HK was in the golden years, companies were being born, education was advancing, the city was developing by its own ogranic needs. It was then Mainland China used this oppurtunity to help the rest of the country industrialize and progress. Hong Kong once encompassed more than half the GDP of China. All of this was done by HK, not China. HK built China with means, that do not represent China. Over the decades China has adopted many themes and ideas originally HK, and have differentiaed HK to being a "free spirit being controlled" culture instead of a "self-reliant and self-made" culture. It is horribly sad, because Mainland has stolen the identity of HK, while shifting the HK mind set to the archaic mindset of China's past.
TL;DR. China had nothing to do with HK success. It was HK that had to do with China's modernization of its coastal provinces, and keeping China progressing forward as a country.
I miss the old Hong Kong. No blue or yellow. Just a Hong Konger.

As a teacher, I was heart broken to see the 2 young people taking photos in front of the tram, despite the alarm sound by the driver. What kind of education they had to display such selfish behaviour? And they are university graduate?

This affinity for Britain is hard to watch; I think these kids born in '97 should look at movies and drama shows from the 80's and 90's. There are countless movies where Chinese were treated as 2nd class citizens from British authorities/officials, there were literally parks that had signs "no Chinese or dogs".
Today rich mainland Chinese are buying up properties in Great Britain.

She mentioned that her parent's forgot to apply for the BNO and she wanted to see if she could still get her's because she was born in January of that year. The immigration lawyer said that it was too late, she would need to apple to UK as a Skilled worker. The Lawyer said that she should be a nurse as there are always demand for nurses. Her boyfriend has his BNO and the lawyer also said that if they get married that could also be another option for her.

If something caused investors to stop believing in chinese economic development, we'd see a huge recession followed by what is essentially an extinction event.

i think its time for Hong Kong people to accept that they should either move out of Hong Kong, or accept they are Chinese citizens, hold a China passport, sing Chinese anthem and accept that HK is part of China like Shanghai.

If your answer is "it used to be China, so it should still be China" then, first, let me ask you this: did you know China used to not exist? Shocking right? Did you know this world 12,000 years ago was completely different and no countries existed? Amazing concept right??? The world is fluid and not solid like you imagine in the limited time we have alive on this Earth. We need to let go of our pride and possessiveness and learn to know when our ideals for others are not wanted. Does that make sense then if Hawaii or Louisana were to secede back to the Natives? Do you think the American government would allow that? This takes me back to the 90s when the Vietnamese boat people arrived at Hong Kong refugee camps, Hong Kong medias, films and moves portrayed them as gangsters, killers, thieves, prostitutes basically anything bad happened in Hong Kong all traced back to Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong.

young people,,, always are idealistic about "democracy" or "freedom". It has very beautiful outlook and is attractive indeed. But in your age, you should go back to school studying more knowledge or try to visit/live in more countries to broaden your horizons. When you really decide to contribute to the the career of democracy, you should also think carefully after democracy, how to run your country. There are many sucessful democratic countries in this world, but there are also many more unsucessful ones who are in troubles of poverty, corruption, drugs, crimes, etc. I can not count on young people to lay out the good policies to manage well the country as many of them do not even know how to get a decent job and support a family independently. But I appreciate their courage which is rarely found in middle-aged guys.

@@alee2204 my cousin was volunteering as a first aid in one of the protests. She was not even protesting but she was arrested by the police. When she was arrested she couldn't contact her family or anyone and she literally disappeared for a few days. There is no law in HK now. The police is merely a tool used by the government and the police are too dumb to realize that since most of them were bad in school and lack education and cognitive skills.
HK’s economic polarization is the root cause that drives young generation to the street, which is always the case in any social turmoil. But unfortunately the movement was fanned up under the name of democracy, which to my opinion is bark to the wrong tree. For that reason it's not that central goverment intervenes too much but too little and too late. And no doubtably there were US and UK's political motives behind all this and took the advantage of the situation. All the young people just were used as cat's paw. HKer's should realize that the only reason HK can achieve to its peak economically is because it's backed up by the Asian's econonic booming since 60’s, not because of under the UK's ruling or democracy. Hong Kong has had one of its economic miracles being one of the 4 Asian little dragons.
China CCP had performed possibly, the BIGGEST economic miracle in human history to have lifted over 600 million people from poverty and transformed its economy to become the second largest in the world in less than 40 years.
Logically, there is STRONG evidence and reason to believe that China working with Hong Kong will and can deliver GREAT results for Hong Kong and make Hong Kong great again.
However, unfortunately, there are many, especially young people in Hong Kong do NOT want China's involvement in Hong Kong even to the extent that they promoted their idea of rather having Hong Kong die economically than to work with China. That's called “Naam Chau”, meaning die together.
Why?
Some Hong Kong people blame Mainland Chinese for EVERYTHING.
Those Hong Kong people, from before 1997 and a few years after 1997, felt they were SUPERIOR to Mainland Chinese due to the earlier economic development of Hong Kong than Mainland China. They felt Mainland Chinese were their poor and silly relatives across the border and didn't think highly of them.
Hong Kong, from 1997 to 2003, suffered one of the MOST serious economic depressions in its 150 years history due to the broke out of the Asian Economic Crisis in 1997. Housing prices dropped over 70% and stock market dropped to historical lows. During that same time, China was developing VERY quickly and MANY Mainland Chinese started to get rich and VERY rich.
SARS hit Hong Kong during early 2003 and further devastated the Hong Kong economy and the livelihoods of Hong Kong people. After SARS, in order to help revive Hong Kong economy, the Central government in Beijing approved Chinese tourists visiting Hong Kong with a much simplified visa, causing millions of Mainlanders to visit Hong Kong and to shop at LOWER prices in Hong Kong as there was ZERO tax and duties in Hong Kong as free trade port. Hong Kong's economy in a very short time was REVIVED with the new found spending powers of millions of Mainland Chinese going to Hong Kong every month.The downside of this incoming Chinese tourists was that MANY Hong Kong people who used to despise and look down on Mainland Chinese, had to face the reality that SOME are MUCH richer and smarter than them.
As usual, when economies did well, prices went up. Prices of Housing, stock market, products of daily use ALL went up and went up SIGNIFICANTLY. More and more smart and hardworking Mainland Chinese studied in Hong Kong or overseas were getting better jobs in Hong Kong and with better pays than Hong Kong people due to their higher caliber. Hong Kong people were LOSING OUT BIG TIME and were forced to face the reality that they were WORSE OFF, at least to those Mainland Chinese who could afford to visit and work in Hong Kong. That caused unrepairable damages to MANY who felt any superiority over Mainland Chinese.
Many Hong Kong people, especially those young ones, had witnessed the improving economy but that only benefited the richer and smarter ones and they themselves suffered DECLINING standards of living. The anger and resentment grew BIGGER as Hong Kong depended on Mainland China more and more and MANY Hong Kong young people were just NOT competitive enough in the freest and most capitalistic city in the world.
Therefore, some Hong Kong “scholars” and opinion leaders over the years INVENTED a story for the youngsters that in Hong Kong things WERE much better during British colonial rule than after returned to China in 1997. Resentment, angers, frustrations, ignorance GREATLY built up among Hong Kong young people and they wanted to overthrow the Hong Kong government and reduced the influence of Chinese central government on Hong Kong. They wanted to make DRASTIC CHANGES to Hong Kong to “improve” Hong Kong in the names of freedom, human rights and democracy. As a matter of fact, most youngsters who believed this “story” were born AFTER 1997 and had NEVER lived a single day during British colonial rule.
Some, especially young people, in Hong Kong believed the story that things WERE much better before 1997 and China was responsible for making their lives difficult. Therefore, they viewed UK and USA as their HELP and SAVIOR to hope to seek assistance and support from them to overthrow Hong Kong and Chinese governments for their “DREAMLAND” to occur in Hong Kong under WESTERN influence and control.
In conclusion, it is VERY UNLIKELY Hong Kong will be great again having declining quality of people, especially young ones, and resisting the support and cooperation from China, the MOST dynamic economic powerhouse of the world.

It was sad to see the girl nearly in tears when talking about her loving boyfriend wanting to marry her. It also made me furious that the other girl may get a 7 year jailtime. Confronting a brutal reality at such a young age was heartbroken. But it was also giving me a sense of calmness and happiness to see the police officer hiking with this "lonely" girl. You probably don't care but I would like to share a story with you which you may or may not find insightful. My grandparents were partizans who were fighting the Nazi's and their subgroups as well as what was at the time pro monarchy movement in the Balkans during WW2. China also had a foreign aggressor as well as a civil war at the time.
When all was said and done a new country was created which consisted of several ethnic groups, customs, religions and a few other minorities and was called "Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" and was lead by Marshal Josip Broz Tito who was the head of the Yugoslav Communist Party. Yugoslavia consisted of several republics which were something like your provinces in China or Oblasti in Russia. As you can relate, the central government was strict and there were quite a few limitations. You were not allowed to oppose or organize against the party, expressing individual ethnic differences (there is a history of ethnic tensions in the region) for either insults or to set oneself apart from the whole was discouraged, press was state controlled, republics did gain increased autonomy over time but the central government was still the highest authority, mixed economy with coop's and unions were encouraged and subsidized, your standard military parades, secret police etc. you get the point. Yugoslavia was not super rich or anything but for the most part, people seemed to have been happy.
In 1980 Tito dies however, nobody is clear on who should take point. A bunch of bad decisions were made and divides based on ethnicity, religion etc. resurfaced after 50 years of being suppressed. One by one the republics declared independence (as was allowed legally) because they could no longer see themselves working with others despite us all being Slavs and a series of brutal, bloody and most vicious conflicts erupted whos consequences can be felt to this day. I was born in Bosnia in 1990 and a few years later Yugoslavia was a memory and a bunch of independent countries who had multi party democratic systems and adopted capitalism were now here. Imagine every individual Chinese province and autonomous zone breaking off and their citizens start killing each other.
Just as other young people, this shift from what we were told was a oppressive and strict dictatorship to democracy was being hailed by a lot of people as a fresh start and freedom. Decades later and while people vote between several party options and sometimes protest and all that is a part of a democratic and free society not much has changed in terms of improving living and work standards. With multiple political parties often come internal societal divisions, you will often be told what you want to hear by candidates for votes even if they don't actually hold that position. Private interests will always play a part in decommissioning even when the people oppose it.
While I appreciate some do not see it as such, the Chinese Communist Party with all it's good and bad history is responsible for where you are today as a country and for all the things you have access to today. This took a lot of work on the part of the leadership which promised all of it's citizens will enjoy ever improving living standards and opportunities and that it will protect you all in whichever way necessary. Yes, in return they demand you fall in line and live by the rules given and I understand this is not the most pleasant feeling ever but ultimately I think it's worth it. Besides, one day when the outside pressure from your rivals subsides or the level of threat to you is low you will see that CPC will become more and more lenient. Yugoslav's may have lost the unity we once had but you must preserve yours no matter what.

Some of the comments here really make me scratch my head lol. Some BNO arrive last December to claim asylum and was told they r allow to enter and have to wait 6 months before they r allow to claim asylum . In the mean time they can find employment and live in the UK as residents. UK residents cannot claim asylum but can become UK citizens . They r not entitled to benefits as asylum seekers r given because they r not allow to seek paid work.
