  • Velvet sambar stag bedded, certainly looks easy doesn't it.... He was spotted on the first arvo of the hunt and was back in his bed before sunrise the next morning and didn't move from that spot all day. He is very well hidden except from this angle and didn't get up to start moving and feed until about 5:15 on both evenings, when it starts getting dark on this face.
I did get in above him at 12:30 to within about 30m, forget the camera, as was very steep and noisy, but could not exactly pin point where he was so pulled out again and went back in the arvo.
Great to watch a mature stag for a while to see what they get up to while growing their antlers are still growing in velvet. Im absolutely positive this is the same stag I put up back in June only 20m away, he was in velvet antlers were half grown then and were the same length as what his brows are now.
Would have liked to get the shots on film though, that would have topped it off.
Oh yeah, look out for the snakes, they're on the move!

well done. do you like the 9.3 over 300 ?

+Peter Spry Thanks Peter, I have taken quite a few sambar now with the 300, using 150gr winchester power point ammo, all one shot kills from 6m to a maximum distance of 80m. This is the first stag I have shot with the 9.3, both shots were taken offhand at around 50-55 meters but he was well and truly down when I found him about 80m away.
I will have to wait and see with the 9.3 but the difference in the two rifles is the Howa is 24" barrel and the Haenel is 22" and very similar in knock down power to the 300wm and most shots on sambar have been around 20m. Cannot knock the 300wm, a great cartridge, so is the 9.3.

Thanks Captain, there seems to be a huge difference in their reaction to the gunshot as compared to you shooting them with the bow....I couldn't get over the lack of reaction from the stag you shot with the bow.

No noise,no nerve damage,no impact shock and he never new that I was there and he had no idea that he was in big trouble.
      Cap.

Great vid as usual DRL, nice stag and well deserved, some serious bush bashing to find him by the look of it as well.

+hank braff yes a lot of time spent trying to work out how to catch up with him in here...I was hoping it was another stag but not to be this time. He has been good eating and quite a bit of fat on his flanks from time spent lying around during antler growth.
