    Great Video! As mentioned Barnes and Nobles should continue to innovate by having co-working spaces, keep their partnerships with Starbucks and in some cities such as mine (Philadelphia) Barnes and Nobles have contracts with colleges and universities and carry text books and merchandise....however they need to move quickly because once Amazon Bookstores chooses to expand, that could be the end of Barnes and Nobles. Ultimately they’re going to need to partner with a tech company in order to survive, the next generation of consumers are more attached to their devices than a “bookstore experience”.

    • @Modellux
      @Modellux 5 лет назад +1

      As a B&N Customer I agree. They need to innovate to survive. Once Walmart kept innovating while Kmart didn't that's what led to the downfall of Kmart. B&N faces this same fate against Amazon if they don't innovate their Services which I don't want to see happen as it's been a part of my Life since 2007.

    I will always buy books from B&N over amazon. Am I paying more? Yes. Do I care? A little. But as far as going to a physical book store to get a book and sit down to relax in a calm warm environment is the best thing I can do for myself. I hope they can keep up with the changing times. I do love the idea of coworker spaces.

    It is widely known in the rest of the world that Americans don't read or seek knowledge like the rest of the world does. So it's no surprise they're struggling. They should go global where there is respect for books in the physical and acedemia in general. Some of the comments shocked me like people saying they only read romance. It's definitely a cultural thing I'd never own an ebook or kindle but I have bookshelves. It's our culture in Ireland to read and write real books. 📚 We have respect for the written word and learning.

    Sales! People want to get a bargain. B&N charges for the membership in order to get the discount. They should offer it for free.
    Why does Walmart sell more books? Because one feels they're getting the same book for paying less money.
    B&N has a lots of foot traffic. People would buy if they felt they were getting a deal on the product.
    I love browsing B&N. What I do i see something I like in the store. I go online to see if I can get it cheaper. I'm in no hurry to get the book because I have many other books I can read while I wait for my book to arrive.
    That money I saved can go to buying another book or buying something else. It adds up.
    Another thing (in my opinion). B&N is paying more for the storage. For example B&N has the books sitting in spacious air conditioned store. Which costs more for B&N. Making them have to charge full price for the books.
    I think it goes down to it being too expensive for the same book you can get cheaper somewhere else.

    If I was appointed as a CEO of Barnes & Noble, then first noble deed I'd do is to ban coffee shops from all the bookstores. So that the customers will buy those books instead of enjoying it with a cup of coffee. And also I would like to open its franchises in other countries. Organizing a discounted book fair once in a year throughout the countries where its franchises exists will help a lot in brand endorsement. And running a campaign saying that 'Even Bill Gates & Warren Buffet became a great humans by reading our books' will improve company's image. In this modern age, people won't believe anything if great personalities aren't involved into it. And also catchphrase like 'Read Today, Rule Tommorow' can capture the brilliant minds of people 👍

    It's sad that BN has consistently failed over the past decades. One thing that they did well was offered a great experience and I feel that they could've capitalized on that instead of trying to chase Amazon. Starbucks and Apple are in the selling experience business as well so they can be used as a model. Most people don't go to Starbucks for the coffee, they go for the experience. So Barnes & Noble should have identified that and transformed their stored to fit that model. For example, each BN has a coffee shop in a small corner and the cash register is normally up front, what they could've done was relocate the coffee to the middle of the store, convert the corners to book shelves with lounges in each section, then have a kiosk in each quadrant that the loungers can see and checkout with if they choose to buy a book. And go a step further and let loungers order stuff from the coffee shop through the app that would be brought to their section. In addition, carry less physical books so that a browser/loungers can read in store and then purchase through the app, and if they wanted the physical book, it could be picked up or shipped out. You save on inventory and can use the extra space for lounging areas to keep people in the store.
    I know it's a rant but I feel like it's a missed opportunity. Nook flopped, BN online sucks because you can just go to Amazon if you're shopping online, and the stores haven't really done anything to capitalize on the foot traffic.

    B&N would best suited to expanding to have facilities like Wework. Private workspaces that could be rented out, coffee bar could also have a wine bar and food and desserts could be delivered to the room if people had meetings. They also could have benefited from partnering with TedTalks. Ted also would allow them to expand into the documentary industry, with individuals who write researched books can take that research to film.

    To save Barnes I'd emphasize the social aspect and rent out the coffee shop area once or twice a week to stuff like book clubs or chess tourneys. Plus emphasize that buying local helps locals with not just tax revenue but employing students and parents as well as regular people. Not only that but buying from Barnes can help local charities especially if they get more into that. I'd make it so if you're not into books but like ebooks and emags, then being in the store when you buy them gives that store some credit/a percentage. That and set your favorite/home store so it can do that even if you're on your ass at home.

    First, I'd focus on improving online sales, starting with their website. Kind of glitchy and confusing. I like the cafe idea, but not sure how that translates into book sales. I dunno. In Utah they're flourishing. I do the potty dance trying to get around people after having trouble finding seating in the Starbucks. Their Nook island is full and has seats. And my Nook, made by Samsung, has GPS. Offline maps anyone? And it has full access to the Google Play Store. The Kindle FireOS is Android on training wheels coming from a techie perspective. And their app store is limited. Plus half the apps work like crap. I dunno if that's changed. I've owned a Kindle. And I don't trust Alexa. Isn't it recording more than the Google home? Plus Amazon's Fire phone. It's gone, Nook is still around and recently Barnes came out with a new Samsung Nook with a beautiful display and front firing speakers. And they have a great selection of ebooks and a decent prices of books in print. Sure it's more than Amazon but only sometimes. At least the ones I want. And I don't wanna wait for Amazon. And buy local and it pays for roads, schools, public housing etc. Oh and it employs locals. Did I mention you can converse with people in a Barnes? Stories like these affect sales like news and polls affect elections.
