I did Mountaintown loop about 20 years ago solo during the winter. There had been an ice storm a couple of weeks before. Lots of fallen trees on the single track section. Took me eight hours.
This ride looks awesome!! I love the trails in Ellijay. You should come down to Columbus Georgia at Standing Boy Creek State Park! Miles and miles of flow trails, downhill gravity trails and jumplines for all skill levels! There is a CVA Sorba group ride on Sunday at 2PM and Tuesday at 6:30PM! We also have a women’s ride on Saturday at 10AM! We would love to have you!
I've ridden Mountain Town maybe three times. We rode the climb the first time. Absolutely never again lol! I ride Penhoti and much of Pisgah by myself but this is a trail i wouldn't consider doing that....mainly because I'm not climbing that damn hill again lol. I hope you have a Garmin inReach or similar doing rides like this. Mad props and cheers! Very cool to see North Georgia trails getting some love.
My same feelings, haha! It’s nice to do just once to say you did it, lol. Definitely! I usually bring my Garmin when I know I’m going to be some place far out.
Sorry I know I'm late to the party, but did you park at the Gates Chapel parking area (just across the bridge and past the FS rd to Bear Creek), then ride up (right at the fork) past the Overlook several miles to get to start of the trail? I've honestly been riding Bear Creek/Pinhotis since 2007 and never ridden Mountaintown. I need to cross it off my list this Sunday. How far from the overlook is the trail?
Yes! I parked at Gates Chapel and then rode all the way up the fork on the right. I’ll link my route I did below on Strava! I did hear that they just re-opened the trail that connects Mountaintown to Bear Creek, which avoids in the long gravel climb. Strava Route: strava.app.link/7crBKt86ONb
Morgan! Way too hang onto it @4:19 !! 12 miles sounds like quite the hike! Really enjoyed the video. I will probably wait for my ebike days or a shuttle :)
I almost didn’t post this one due to the camera shake. The shutter speed was unfortunately too slow, so I apologize in advance!

😳😳 I can only imagine how long that would take in those conditions!
Garmin inReach might be a good purchase
I have one!
Awesome. Mad respect for doing that climb... I'll probably catch a Mulberry Gap shuttle for that...
That climb. ☠️ I did hear though that they recently cleared the trail that connects Mountaintown to Bear Creek, which cuts out that gravel climb.

Absolutley gorgeous territory .... I would be a tad worried about wild animals .... and I bet the mosquitos were pretty bad ....
So nice through there! I didn’t see mosquitoes weirdly enough, but saw plenty of ticks crawling around.

Thank you! Definitely recommend shuttling, unless you really love a long gravel climb, haha! 😅
That Bear climb is a beast. The overlook on Potato is amazing. Don't think there's another trail in the SE with so many cool creek crossings tho.
Wow! You are sooooo brave!!!
Bravo! But how can you stand the sound of that swarm of murder hornets chasing you? It sounds like an i9. Am I right?
