A lot of people get interested in Russian writers like Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov. I would strongly recommend start by listening to these videos - you want to start hearing and listening to the sound of the language right away. Maybe learn the alphabet first but don't start with the grammar - just listen. I love hearing native speakers. There's something about the rythmn and cadence - native speakers show you how natural it actually can sound - the combinations of the consonants and the alphabet can seem quite unfamiliar to English speakers.
Also the fact that the roots of the words are mostly slavic. Russian doesn't have the heavy borrowings from Latin, French and Greek in the way English and many western european languages. There's some Greek but the sheer volume of prefixes, suffixes and roots of all the Russian nouns and verbs can be daunting. Add to that the perfective and imperfective pairs of the verbs makes it a lot of work but when you start with short conversational phrases it's not as overwhelming. Just short phrases with a lot of repetition so your mind can begin to think in Russian. Once you are thinking in Russian, then you build up and keep adding to the vocabulary and grammar. So many words in Russian kind of sound like what they mean - глупый, зашуршац.

I learned Russian so many years ago - I want to read Bulgakov but I don't want to go all the way back to studying textbooks - I just needed a refresher course to relearn the grammar. Dative is used for several reasons, "мне нравится" is certainly among them

I have found contradictions to this rule ( that надо requires an infinitive to follow) in my database and so I am doubting the quality of my examples, many of them scooped up originally by Cooljugator or Reverso. I will now search through my 39,000 sentences to see what is out there. I used to be a database analyst and so I am aware of all the tools, Oracle, Microsoft Access VBA and other tools.

Out of 200 examples using надо, I found about 8 problem sentences, some of which had been adopted from RussianPod101 back in 2012. Maybe they were caught and fixed in the past eight years. Others were missing an infinitive but it was strongly implied. One was idiomatic and highly colloquial. One was actually a preposition над with an о tacked on the end, to prevent two vowels from juxtaposing. A few verbose sentences from Cooljugator no longer impressed me as useful and so I removed them from my personal database.
Anna, you could disregard everything I've posted. I had not fully listened to the entire video before posting. Later, you yourself pointed out the same misuse of надо that I spotted.
@@AnnaCherRussianfromtheHeartThese exceptions came from other websites many years ago. I do not remember being warned they are colloquial, not correct grammar.

Teddy C yes, they are synonyms. But if you are in a store, I would ask ‘Можно мне плитку шоколада’ 🙂

Have you already made a Video on Passive Voice? I did not find one. Therefore I put my question in here, because Putin is mentioned in Dative. :)
I found following Sentence (on RUclips as a subtitle) Путину показали
новый российский самолет - The only way to translate it in a sensible
way is: Putin was shown a new aeroplane. But " показали" definitively is
not passive voice. What is your opinion on it?
