I love the way this guy performs. He's playing the piano and singing - like there are two people here. That's why Shaw's talent is so unusual. There's a Jazz pianist and an emotional soul singer in the room. Works for me.
Ian Shaw is the best male jazz singer in Europe, with a scope of expressive chops that transcends any single genre of music. He is the simply the best, and long will be. And, quietly, the teacher of many, musician of musicians....A Mel Torme of a new century, and we are blessed whenever he calls upon us. No matter how briefly Todd Barkan/KEYSTONE KORNER INTERNATIONAL/producer of A WORLD STILL TURNING...
In 1997 I was in San Francisco getting out of the car to do some shopping with my G/F and I made her stop so I could hear all of this song on the radio. I was stunned at the brilliance of this arrangement. It surpasses the beauty and expression of the original. Sublime is the word.
I discovered Ian when I was searching for songs written by Fran Landesman. He recorded an album of her music entitled "A Ghost In Every Bar," and you should seek it out. You'll be better for having listened to it. Ian Shaw has a knack of interpreting music in a way you don't expect, so listening to him becomes a very active endeavor. If you're trying to work and listen, give it up because you won't accomplish much. Take a break, put on your headphones, and let it wash over you. I'd plan a trip around his concert schedule just to see live.
I had the pleasure of hearing Ian sing this song this evening at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London as part of "A Century of British Songs", and it was an utterly unforgettable evening, and the singing....sublime
Ian Shaws moving version of ALQNE AGAIN NATURALLY is indeed sublime. It was, however, written by an Irish man named Gilbert O Sullivan. Dick Tynan Dublin Ireland
Jazz is a style of playing....the hallmark is improvisational phrasing and skill. The way this guy plays is free and interesting rhythmically. He also sings with using his voice in a more instrument-like way, also typical of the jazz genre. He hums around 2:50...basically stuff like that constitutes it as jazz. He probably would never play the song the same twice.
@simonbild67 What's wrong with camp cabaret then Simon? You really are an angry person aren't you? Why don't you come along to listen to Ian at the upcoming Wakefield event, we could even have a dance you and I. Even at your age.
Nothing wrong with camp Caberet but not that Much right with it either Also nothing wrong with Getting angry or even weak British jazz performers who will soon be queuing down the benifits Office
You have managed to ham up a great tune by a 70's legend check out Gilbert o Sullivan version for meaning full content not pretentious jazzy camp pompous drival
Like most british jazzers they have watered down almost every great song and turned it into passable caberet and low rent tribute shows to real ground breaking Heros .. Stop chewing the carcus of our legends you lightweight

That was pretty much my reaction the first time I heard Ian Shaw on the radio.
And I was surprised to discover he wasn't Black!

The musicianship here, one person on piano and vocals, is pretty well beyond belief.

Soberbo!
As Grayson Perry says about art, you don't have to like it all. Cover versions don't destroy the original, do they?
Love it.
I have been trying to get this on Itunes, but can't find it.
Can you help?
whaou!
@3983Signe
You're not alone, this song has the same effect on me
Can you post, "This is Always"?

Why do people change the tune ? It spoils the essence of the song..just to propagate their ranges..its disgraceful
disposable jazz singer
