This is a beautiful presentation about starting a business and I'm 66 years young and this is right up my alley, I'm still employed, will call it quits when I'm 70, but I have 36 acres and will be raising honey bees, rabbits and now quail, love your presentation
Great advice! Wish we would have heard this a year ago, "build customer base first". By far the toughest aspect we faced and still continue to work on every day.
This is the same challenge for any small business. Marketing and building a reliable and consistent customer base is the main reason why most of them fail. Doesn’t matter if you are a farmer, baker, or restaurant owner. The true magic is in being a good people person and making it work against the odds!
Great start for your new advice section. I wanted quail for about 2 years, but my sister was not on board. Finally I just bought 40 pullets at an auction, lost 2 in the transition. After about 24 escaped (latch got left undone??), left with 32 (captured most over time). I butchered out 8 myself (took me 1hr 30 min), something I had never done before. I know now I need better quality (to get bigger quail) but I can see myself doing this with the right information and support. And yes, we had them for dinner recently. Lol I will be watching. Thanks
Spot on advice. This is exactly how I started a commercial beekeeping business. I built from within. And when when I needed a large increase I bought hives to cover the increase. I’ve had people ask me “ what number should I start at”. I tell them start where you are at. Even if that’s one hive. You can’t get started if you don’t start somewhere. This video reminded me to follow my own advice. Thank you Zack for your time.
You are an awesome reference of information to our shared interest. Talk more about the rat issues though....like ..you're sooner or later gonna accept that if you have any farm animals on property.......but you are an awesome entrepreneur ❤
Raising Quail is definitely a LIFESTYLE! EVERY DAY, stuff to do and get done, and NO vacation, unless you trust someone with you're business. Agree completely on having customers and great marketing BEFORE getting in over your head! Luckily, I have been fortunate in creating accounts while I went a little crazy. I also recommend finding a color or variety you love and raising the best. Quality is key!
Such great information. If you just came upon this video, please hit the thumbs up, subscribe, click the notification bell, and select all, so that you don't miss the rest of this series.
I know this is and older video but this is my first video I've seen from you guys. Very very informative and can't wait to watch all of your videos! Thank you for taking the time to teach us. God bless!
Thank you, we’re just getting started and ultimately want to make some profit off quail but want to get our “feet wet” first and learn all we can before increasing bird population. This first video is perfect!!!
Excellent information, Zack! It’s so smart to start with the mindset of not growing too fast, sticking with growth based on customer growth. I am very excited about this series as quail is the one part of our homestead that I am passionate about and my husband is really enjoying as well. This is the kind of side hustle we can do together. Thanks for sharing all your experience and knowledge!
Awesome information thank you very much, I'm learning more and more everyday from your videos. I truly understand the lifestyle aspect of it we raise French bulldogs, and there are no vacations there are no days off and I have always loved quail, I'm a country boy so the aspect of working hard and taking it care of the animals is not a foreign concept. Thank you for putting out the basics.
I seldom comment but I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. A lot of info and I rewatch them often until it sinks in. Thank you so much and plz. keep on doing them.
Love your channel and learning all I can before I start. Was actually wanting to start 6 months ago but now since I'll be moving in 6 months just gonna keep doing research. Can't wait to place my order and start raising my own though. Look forward to you videos in this playlist.
Very good video, just have a question to make sure that I understanding your meaning on the one week wait, two week wait etc. Will try to get in my question tomorrow Sunday at your 7:00 pm session. Thank you Zach.
You are very thorough and informative! I love your videos. I used to raise coturnix in the city in a little hutch in my garden about 10 years ago. I sold my eggs to a tiny gourmet shop at the Pike Place Market in Seattle-and they sold to nice restaurants. It was a fun hobby that supplied me with some pocket money! I can’t wait to get back into it!!
Thanks for the video! I’m looking forward to this series! You know my daughter has been asking to start a business. We just need a plan before we kick it off. We sold nearly all of our jumbos. So, I’ve learned a bit about the local market. It’s probably time to build another cage for our “customers.” I liked the part about taking care of the birds for them, they are not yours. That mentality will also help my daughter part with them.
Fantastic starter video for what promises to be a fantastic series of videos!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us Zack!! My wife and I are growing these quail for our own self sustainability first and foremost. Since we started our journey a little over a year ago (it started with your jumbo wild eggs by the way), we've been surprised by the interest in our project from family, friends, and neighbors. It's very exciting to see all the people around us that are more and more interested in buying our eggs and meat, as well as looking to start raising their own, instead of chickens. Many people wanted to raise something for themselves but were put off by the challenges they faced with chickens. After seeing our system and how simple we keep things, raising quail seems to be a much better fit for their plans. Your series on "Quail for profit" may be a very useful tool for us as we look at how, & if, we want to grow larger going forward!!!!
This is OUTSTANDING. Great business ethics. This should be a model for all businesses. I’m just looking at a small operation for personal use, but lessons in mindset and good habits can be drawn here, and applied to any commercial enterprise. Hats off.
Hi Zach you truly inspired me. I have been watching your vids and started in May 2021 I now have 500 birds and a customer base all along the Florida coast. My biggest issue is noone to go to re: the legal requirements. City, state, and governmental requirements I want to make sure that I am legal. I have the NPIP information but what is AI?
First of all love your content. I plan on trying to start a business selling quail and will be making an order soon. Have one question now though. Are you able to still take a week family vacation to travel or is that kind of hard to do? Or do you have employees to look after the quail while you're gone?
I see it as I'm saving money on eggs and poultry. I would have to move to a more livestock friendly area to sell to strangers. Neighbors or those we know are the only ones I could sell to. Gardening , canning, dehydrating and always looking for free firewood sucks up time almost year round. Today's supposed to be hatch day. Waiting to see the new gray and whites. Nothing yet.
So for a person that's just getting started do I go out and get confirmation of possible customers or wait till I have a certain amount of birds culled and in the freezer to sell?
@@MyshireFarm Very encouraging. I love the way you take care of your quail. I'm just starting a "back yard" quail project. I have 2 cages set up and am just waiting on a few other supplies to arrive. I've been watching all of your videos and your teaching style is right on point. Thank you. My question would be, how many quail should I start with (just hens for now). Maybe I'll try hatching once I get my feet wet.
1k a month 😳 I’ve got 5 hens one male and trying to just sell an extra dozen a week to get experience. Costs me $6 a month for food and they produce $30-$35 worth of eggs a month. After they pay off their cages I’m down to $30 left then they are making money.
My cousin she has 50 button quails, she says button quails are better because they require even less space, lay more eggs, less clean-up, are much less noisy, eat much less feed and easier to raise 😇
Well what I want to do is buy baby and raise them and get them processed them with a processed update and sell them at farmer market and flea market along with rabbits and children and I want jumbo while
Valid point. I was really just asking to help support the channel but will for sure look at this and see how else I can say that. Thanks for the feedback
Everyone keeps telling me how glorious and perfect quail are, but no explanation why... 28% feed is expensive, if I can even find it... I'm not buying the hype. No facts. No evidence. No logic. No reason.
This is my 3rd time watching this playlist. It’s that good. Thanks.
Thanks for watching again hahaha

I love how you said "66 years YOUNG" that's the spirit! Good luck on your endeavors!
Have it as a side hustle for now. No point waiting until 70 and not already built a foundation there

So what is your advise on in breeding. How often do you make changes or do you need to???
Good advice. Will be looking forward to the rest of the story! Thank you.
Hi I’m just wondering if you guys can ship out to Australia or if you guys just do American shipping
Just in the US at this time sorry
"They are not our quail, they're your quail" 🤔 Did we just become brothers? ~ Cause we sure sound a lot alike.
Hahahaha
How are they about hatching and rearing their own chicks? Also, can they be raised on pasture in a mobile chicken tractor, and do they eat ticks?
Very rarely will they go broody
Nope not boring me. Need as many small details as possible :)
Would sand be okay to put in the brooder as bedding?
I would not recommend sand until after the brooder stage
Can you speak on fodder for quail? Does it meet nutrient needs? Ty for your videos, you're so helpful!
We do not grow fodder but a lot of people do and have great success with it
So for a person that's just getting started do I go out and get confirmation of possible customers or wait till I have a certain amount of birds culled and in the freezer to sell?
Both at the same time. Get some ready get customers for what you have and grow your customer base and your quail operation at the same time
How many quail is too few to start breeding, genetically speaking. I have about 20, all descended from the same rooster. And 4-5 hens.
No worries. That would be fine: I would probably add a few new males into the mix in a year or 2 and you should be good to go
How much is a dozen old hens and 3 males. I only want for meat purpose.
We have an all male set on the website (10 males for $30) at www.myshirefarm.com
I would lime to buy sone city this fertilized eggs. Do you sell?
We do all of our options are available at www.myshirefarm.com
Lots of good advice but I wish you would get to the points a bit faster.
Sorry. I am a rambler. I will try to do better
Can you ship live quail?
Yes they should be back on our website in the next 2 weeks
