historical background: Simon Vasyliovych Petlyura is a Ukrainian politician and journalist. He was the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian People's Army (UNA) and led the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) during the Ukrainian War of Independence, which was part of the wider Russian Civil War.
Petliura was born in a family of Cossack origin in Poltava. From early childhood, he was a supporter of socialism and Ukrainian nationalism, which he defended in his extremely fruitful journalistic career. After the February Revolution of 1917, which overthrew the tsarist monarchy, the Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed, and Petliura was elected head of its army. The Republic was briefly interrupted by the pro-German Second Hetmanate, but in late 1918, Petliura, together with other members of the socialist Directory of Ukraine, organized an uprising and overthrew the regime, restoring the Republic. He headed the Directory in early 1919, after the Bolsheviks invaded Ukraine and pushed the UNA into Galicia. Faced with inevitable defeat, Petliura entered into an alliance with Józef Pilsudski's Poland. The Polish-Soviet war ended with the victory of Poland, but Ukraine remained under Soviet control, which forced Petliura to go into exile. He initially ran a government in exile from Poland, but eventually settled in Paris.
The Sixth Sich Rifle Division is an infantry division of the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, formed in the spring of 1920 from Ukrainian soldiers captured and interned in the Polish camps of Lanzut and Berest. The commander of the division was Colonel Marko Bezruchko, the chief of staff was Colonel Vsevolod Zmienko (both from the Sich Rifle Corps).
Until April 1920, the 6th division underwent an intensive one and a half month training and additionally replenished its ranks with Ukrainian soldiers from other internment camps. At the same time, its personnel was fully armed, the division received all the necessary military property and horses.
In April year of training of the 6th division was continued in Berdychev, where it formed a military garrison of the city. At this time, the 6th reserve brigade of the division was formed with a temporary base in this city. After inspecting the division in Berdychev, Chief Otaman of the UNR Forces S. Petliura presented it with a Cossack crimson flag with a golden trident in a blue upper corner with the inscription "For the liberation of Ukraine".
