- Marita Solberg - Norwegian soprano
Beautiful voice, good technic, simple and charming.
This is the best interpretation. Marita is the best in this song. -
I am 88 years old - waiting for my son visiting me in Good old Germany. Like Solveig longing for Peer Gynt.
'Tis a pity one cannot click a 'like' each time one listens.
Came here while reading the second book from The Seven Sisters series. This is absolutely beautiful
Me toooo hehe, makes the book come even more alive 😊
Me too!❤
Me too!
Five years old and lying under my mother's Grand Steinway listening to her playing Peer Gynt and gently singing...now 80 and the moment is quite clear in my mind. She is missed.
My story exactly, including the Steinway! I'm now 84.
@@charlessawyer6123 Thanks for the note Charles. And, another opportunity to listen to Marita profoundly sweet voice. Here is a wish for you having another decade of listening to such lovely music.
What a beautiful, poignant memory. I smiled as I read your comment because when I was a young child I also sat beneath my mother's piano as she played Grieg, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin. I miss my mom too.
Not for long.
@@SmilingIbis Solveig sings of God. JOHN 11: 25 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
Marita, an exceptional beautiful woman and voice. Excellence.
And she's absolutely stunning 😍
I listen to this. Over and over. Every day.
This must be what heaven sounds like.
There's something about this kind of melodies made in the "northern parts" of the world which is quite special. As a southern European who moved to the colder areas, I think these melodies come from expecting the summer that, once arrives, is short and almost never fulfilled
the loong days are enough of summer's fulfillment
I've just been exploring Croatian music. Beautiful too. There's also something in the soul that comes thru in the music of people on coastal lands. Listen to this guy too: ruclips.net/video/QwxoL-lddL8/видео.html
@@whollybraille7043 VEry nice!
without any doubt: the voice and the ability of Marita Stolberg is sky-high outstanding. Hardly any other soprano is or has ever been capable of such a performance, She is undoubtedly one of the best singers of the last and this century. With exquisite esteem.
Loving this in 2021. Have watched so many times.
🎉2024❤
The most beautiful love song in existence.
As ever, great singers sing at their very best in their own language in a piece by a native composer in front of their own people. Beautiful.
Marita Solberg is only a pseudonym. This is Solveig singing.
Brilliant comment.Thank you.
It's the name of the singer, not the song. I don't get what ya are getting at.
A nordic fairy tale princess singing . ..makes my heart dance along with every note! Bewildering!!!
Norwegian lyrics, translated line by line into english:
Kanskje vil der gå både Vinter og Vår
Maybe it will take both winter and spring;
And also next summer, and the whole year too;
But one time you will come, I know for sure;
Here shall I wait, 'cause I promised you 'ere.
♫♪♫♫♫♪♪ [interlude]
Gud styrke dig, hvor du i Verden går
God give strength to thee, you who walk in the world;
Gud glaede dig, hvis du for hans fodskammel står
God pleasure thee, for whom his footstool stands;
Her skal jeg vente till du komme igjen
Here I shall wait for you 'till your next coming;
And wait up here, 'till we meet again, my friend!
thank you for the translation
Thank you! 🙂
thank you !
Tack ska du ha
(let' do the other half again, after the interlude:)
Gud styrke dig, hvor du i Verden går
God strengthen you, wherever in the world you walk;
Gud glaede dig, hvis du for hans fodskammel står
God pleasure thee, should you be standing before His footsool;
Her skal jeg vente till du komme igjen
Here I shall wait for your return;
And should you be waiting in heaven, there we'll meet again, my friend!
Majestic. A wind blowing the fjords has purified my mind.
Words can’t even begin to express the exquisite haunting beauty of this piece and Marita’s voice.
Marita sings as one with the instrumentalists, not accompanied by them. Her ego dissolves in the music, a rare event in concerts. Oh, and good recording!
I'd never heard of Marita until I came to this. What an exquisite beauty - and that voice! So delicate and powerful. No doubt she is a national treasure in Norway.
While this is an excellent performance, someone else is already a national treasure in Norway with this song:

The clarity and honesty of grieg brings me to my knees.
Grief is so evocative….the orchestra and soloist performed this piece gorgeously.
All the music by Grieg is so deeply "espressiva" that it's no possible to avoid not moving your heart. Marita knows how to make it even "piu espressiva" in this divine song of Solveig in Peer Gynt. Superb!!!
paradoxically fills my heart with both sadness and joy.
+edward kriege Beauty can have a touch of sadness and nostalgia, can't it?
+edward kriege I find that ALL of 'Peer Gynt' makes me feel that way...bittersweet, but incredibly beautiful. I studied and performed this piece in college and it never fails to make my heart ache.
+edward kriege
The sadness of the song is offset by the beauty of the music.
+edward kriege Yes, true, but beautiful.
This beautiful song subtly underlines the morose, uneasy mood of Serge Leroy's TV film version of G. Simenon's "Maigret chez les Flamands".
This magical song touches my spiritual side more than any other especially when performed by such a superb songstress as Marita Solberg, just heaven.
I first heard this sung by a famous soprano. Lovely. THIS version is even more spellbinding. I'll look for a studio version.
I stumble across this and hear Marita for the first time. OMG, a magnificent voice !! Only the strongest of singers can perform this song with dynamics and emotion.
Im waiting for my son coming from USA. Like Solveig with-waiting for Peer Gynt - that's me. I am 88 years old. Wonderful song! Finally he is here!
No wonder she sings it so well : it is Solberg's song after all !
More seriously, I think I could fall in love with her even without the video, just by listening to her voice...
so beautiful I almost melt each time I hear it, a cloud of extraordinary musicality
My favorite voice for this song 😍😘😘
Marita, you’re an angel walking the earth!
Your gentle coloratura approach to this, your beautiful face and figure, dear blue eyes and gown, long, blond hair, and sweet expression. Yes, the voice and vision of an angel.
One of best interpretations I’ve heard of Solveig’s Song. The earth is a better place with music sung so sensitively by women of your feminine charms.
It's not the look, the dress, the folds, the fabric, it's the note perfect punch to the heart.
yes it's the best version and here the orchestra supports her beautifully.
Cudowna.
She has a voice like a goddess. I like her very very much.
Beautiful song, music and diva
Honestly, she has a standard soprano voice.
Homestly, you’re making a fool of yourself. You state the same quote, on all singers of Soveig’s Song.

Marita's sad expression is exceptional, combined with a well polished beautiful voice. Bravo Marita!
Cleaning from the deep bottom of my soul.
Feel like I was born freshly again.
A song of surpassing beauty, perfectly performed. Thank you!
One of the most beautiful performance 👏🤗🌹
Marita Solberg really is the perfect singer for this song . Outstanding performance and great orchestra in a wonderful setting.
You are the best one ever to sing this song ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why does Classical music have that ability to reach deep into our emotional side? It almost makes me weep sometimes when I hear a particularly beautiful piece, but also it gladdens the heart. Long may it not be swamped by what passes for music today.
Back in the '80's, in the Orange County Register (So. Calif), there was an article about a Japanese researcher somewhere in the States, who found a correlation between the brain's chemistry (I hope I'm remembering that right) and classical music. It wasn't very detailed, this article. But a transcription was accompanied with the story in musical notation transcribed from the chemistry and I had a friend play it. It sounded like Bach. Some 15 years ago, I managed to find the article once more via their archives so I know it's still out there. But I've never forgotten about it. I've also never seen anything more on the subject either. I'm pretty sure that "inspiration" (chemistry) is within us all, which would help explain why classical speaks to our souls. Unlike the electronic stuff of the modern age. It isn't really in our natural selves.
It's always been there, but most of the last two generations of young folk are/were to ignorant too understand it.
Because it is a timless music...and pure Beauty..
We live in an era of decadence. Grieg, Chopin... all history.
Almost? I would say always. This, J'ai perdu mon Eurydice, Marietta's lied, Ebben? Ne andrò lontana, to name but a few...
Having heard several vocal interpretations of Solveig's song I would rather stick to instrumental ones, so I clicked that link just out of curiosity.
And suddenly... Chills down the spine, heart beats faster. What a feeling, what an expression...
This is not just an excellent performance of a beautiful song, this is something which involves the personality of the artist, deep understanding and emotional identification. Thank you Marita for providing one of those rare and precious moments when new, undiscovered so far areas of beauty open up, making life more complete and involving a desire to be and to act better ourselves.
And the people in the audience recognized perfectly the great value of what they had just listened to, we can see and hear that in their enthusiastic applause.
every word true!

Yes, perfectly expressed. The very best interpretation, indeed. Thank you, Marita.
This is one of the most exquisite pieces of music I have ever heard. Magnificent! Thanks for sharing it.
Pure magic.
Bravissima!!!,wonderful beatiful viice and soprano (a joy for all senses). The deep sentimental interpretation she does, really caugths my heart and soul...Brava!!!
My Dad introduced this to me 30 years ago. This piece wrenches my heart to hear even though I do not understand the words. Sometimes with really good music you do not need it translated.
Fantastically performed, thank you.
Solveig's Song becomes Marita Solberg's song in this lovely rendering of Grieg's Peer Gynt. And thanks also to the whole Orchestra !!!
This has been my favorite since 1956, when my father turned me onto Classical. I found that a movie was made of Peer Gynt in 1941. An experimental 16mm B&W with English subtitles to the silent film. It stars a 17yr. old Charlton Heston in his first film role. It's pretty bad but it gives you the gist of the story.
My go to album. Soothes my Norwegian soul. She has a beautiful voice.
Magnifica obra, preciosa voz!!! Gracias!!!
I greatly enjoyed another version of Solvieg's song from Marita Solberg.Yet another beautiful soprano. Wonderbar!
Tack Lucinda Riley
This is the best interpretation of this song among the many I have listened to.
I've shared this many many times. I've received thanks many many times.
What a fantastic voice , and perfect pitch !

Wunderschön gesungen, wunderbares Orchester, Glanzleistung des Komponisten! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The setting, the singer, the song-- all perfect. Very moving. I tell my students to listen to it when they need something very special in their lives.
never been a big opera fan. but i sure do like this
Joe's Violin is nominated for Oscar. Solveig's song was used to thread together the entire story. As soon as the music started, memories of my younger years listening to a recording of a Chinese soprano singing this song came to me. Such a beautiful heart wrenching piece of music, as many of Grieg's works. You are right, Solberg had the best interpretation, not only artistically, but humanistically. At the beginning, the orchestra seems a little behind but the second part, especially the modulating bridge, both performed with profound emotions, yet remain subdued - a neat trick. Just love it. Thank you for sharing.
I watched this wonderful tearful yet uplifting film on the NYT website and then I came here to listen to the song. Grieg's words were so poignant when his mother sent them to her son Joe in the death camp in Siberia. Such a shame neither she nor his brother survived the holocaust to fulfil the promise of the written words. What a lovely story of the violin being donated, the young violinist was so gorgeous as a person and so moving when she played this piece for Joe.
Simply fabulous! Brava Marita your voice is pure gold! I love your interpretation and musicality. I just would like to know all the 168 people those who put their thumbs towards: they must be God in person! You're great! Bravissima!!!
Gracias Srta, Marita.
I find her beautifully breathtaking, "Solveig's song (Peer Gynt's beloved in the story) is astounding. She is beautifully deceiving in her talent as a Soprano she reaches notes perfectly. This piece is by Grieg is made just for her it seems. Thank you for the post
Fully agree. Love the performance.
Marita Solberg - Norwegian soprano
Beautiful voice, good technic, simple and charming.
This is the best interpretation. Marita is the best in this song.
Piękne wykonanie, naprawdę piękne!!!!
A very pure voice!
Absolutely mesmerizing voice!
Very good technique, pitch perfect. She is beautiful & elegant too.
This had me in tears, I was brought up with this music amongst other things. I have also sung it myself under the supervision of my singing teacher/coach, who ( surprise surprise) is Norwegian too. They seem to have the most AMAZING singing teachers and music schools there, as I have yet to hear ONE bad singer from Norway, and I have heard quite a few over my 73 years of age.
Csodálatos hang. Gratulálok és köszönöm!
I would play this theme on my piano from sheet music my Russian piano teacher gave me in college. After a bad motorcycle accident, I would play it over and over at home depressed . I never knew the name till I used google translate tonight. It’s hauntingly beautiful even after learning it for piano 20yrs ago.
what a beautiful and powerful voice
I am completely spellbound by this wonderful rendition! So hauntingly beautiful(refering to both singer & song!)
the words of this song are so kind and hearty. everything is so perfect here, fell in love the moment i heard it
My dad's favorite. It was played at his memorial service, and also while he was dying.
Well that's depressing...
it can be seen another way.. as if it 's comforting to him..
Not a few men must have known a girl whom they knew loved them in their youth but they have to leave because adventure beacons. The world is calling. And then they remember her in their latter years. But as the old saying goes, one can never really go home again. I would love the song played on my funeral, if I ever have one.
Annelies Joss i'd like to hear this when i die.
Sorry for your loss.
Simply so pure and beautiful!
tendresse, simplicité ,naturel, expressivité -j'aime bcp
This is the song I sang when I was in my senior high school but it translated to Chinese lyrics...I finally found the original version...really love it very very much. it's so awesome and beautiful.
i would like to hear this song with Chinese lyrics! :-)
Very ~ very~~~good~~!!!♡♡♡
Is there any way you could send me the Chinese-language text version through email?
Id love to hear that!!

100%. increases in intensity of desperation. She waited 20 years for him. That was like 50 years today. She saved herself to shrivel alone in old age.
Peer Gynt was a Narcissist. He love bombed her, got bored, moved on, but she was infected with a limerence. There are many Solveigs.
I just love how she sings this.
The loveliest! Interpretation, tone, delivery--all superb!
The soul of Mr. Greeg , composer was delivered to people who live in 21st Century by Ms.Marita Solberg , soprano.
Marita Solberg is a talented soprano given by GOD.
¿ QUÉ CARAJO ES god ???
I think her mother & father had a little part in it
Merveilleuse voix, merveilleuse personne

Love Grieg, love this version, so beautiful
Chills up and down my back. So very beautiful.
