Five years old and lying under my mother's Grand Steinway listening to her playing Peer Gynt and gently singing...now 80 and the moment is quite clear in my mind. She is missed.
@@charlessawyer6123 Thanks for the note Charles. And, another opportunity to listen to Marita profoundly sweet voice. Here is a wish for you having another decade of listening to such lovely music.
What a beautiful, poignant memory. I smiled as I read your comment because when I was a young child I also sat beneath my mother's piano as she played Grieg, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin. I miss my mom too.

without any doubt: the voice and the ability of Marita Stolberg is sky-high outstanding. Hardly any other soprano is or has ever been capable of such a performance, She is undoubtedly one of the best singers of the last and this century. With exquisite esteem.
I'd never heard of Marita until I came to this. What an exquisite beauty - and that voice! So delicate and powerful. No doubt she is a national treasure in Norway.
There's something about this kind of melodies made in the "northern parts" of the world which is quite special. As a southern European who moved to the colder areas, I think these melodies come from expecting the summer that, once arrives, is short and almost never fulfilled

Marita, you’re an angel walking the earth! Your gentle coloratura approach to this, your beautiful face and figure, dear blue eyes and gown, long, blond hair, and sweet expression. Yes, the voice and vision of an angel. One of best interpretations I’ve heard of Solveig’s Song. The earth is a better place with music sung so sensitively by women of your feminine charms.
All the music by Grieg is so deeply "espressiva" that it's no possible to avoid not moving your heart. Marita knows how to make it even "piu espressiva" in this divine song of Solveig in Peer Gynt. Superb!!!

Marita sings as one with the instrumentalists, not accompanied by them. Her ego dissolves in the music, a rare event in concerts. Oh, and good recording!
My Dad introduced this to me 30 years ago. This piece wrenches my heart to hear even though I do not understand the words. Sometimes with really good music you do not need it translated.
Why does Classical music have that ability to reach deep into our emotional side? It almost makes me weep sometimes when I hear a particularly beautiful piece, but also it gladdens the heart. Long may it not be swamped by what passes for music today.
Back in the '80's, in the Orange County Register (So. Calif), there was an article about a Japanese researcher somewhere in the States, who found a correlation between the brain's chemistry (I hope I'm remembering that right) and classical music. It wasn't very detailed, this article. But a transcription was accompanied with the story in musical notation transcribed from the chemistry and I had a friend play it. It sounded like Bach. Some 15 years ago, I managed to find the article once more via their archives so I know it's still out there. But I've never forgotten about it. I've also never seen anything more on the subject either. I'm pretty sure that "inspiration" (chemistry) is within us all, which would help explain why classical speaks to our souls. Unlike the electronic stuff of the modern age. It isn't really in our natural selves.

I find her beautifully breathtaking, "Solveig's song (Peer Gynt's beloved in the story) is astounding. She is beautifully deceiving in her talent as a Soprano she reaches notes perfectly. This piece is by Grieg is made just for her it seems. Thank you for the post
Having heard several vocal interpretations of Solveig's song I would rather stick to instrumental ones, so I clicked that link just out of curiosity. And suddenly... Chills down the spine, heart beats faster. What a feeling, what an expression... This is not just an excellent performance of a beautiful song, this is something which involves the personality of the artist, deep understanding and emotional identification. Thank you Marita for providing one of those rare and precious moments when new, undiscovered so far areas of beauty open up, making life more complete and involving a desire to be and to act better ourselves. And the people in the audience recognized perfectly the great value of what they had just listened to, we can see and hear that in their enthusiastic applause.
Simply fabulous! Brava Marita your voice is pure gold! I love your interpretation and musicality. I just would like to know all the 168 people those who put their thumbs towards: they must be God in person! You're great! Bravissima!!!
Joe's Violin is nominated for Oscar. Solveig's song was used to thread together the entire story. As soon as the music started, memories of my younger years listening to a recording of a Chinese soprano singing this song came to me. Such a beautiful heart wrenching piece of music, as many of Grieg's works. You are right, Solberg had the best interpretation, not only artistically, but humanistically. At the beginning, the orchestra seems a little behind but the second part, especially the modulating bridge, both performed with profound emotions, yet remain subdued - a neat trick. Just love it. Thank you for sharing.
I watched this wonderful tearful yet uplifting film on the NYT website and then I came here to listen to the song. Grieg's words were so poignant when his mother sent them to her son Joe in the death camp in Siberia. Such a shame neither she nor his brother survived the holocaust to fulfil the promise of the written words. What a lovely story of the violin being donated, the young violinist was so gorgeous as a person and so moving when she played this piece for Joe.
This is the song I sang when I was in my senior high school but it translated to Chinese lyrics...I finally found the original version...really love it very very much. it's so awesome and beautiful.

As ever, great singers sing at their very best in their own language in a piece by a native composer in front of their own people. Beautiful.
A nordic fairy tale princess singing . ..makes my heart dance along with every note! Bewildering!!!
