Now, I'm ready to add some polka dot material or ruffled slip like material to the slit... are you feeling up to making a video about doing this with your recommendations on if I should try to go with the open slit option, or the not open slit option? Thinking about that second option makes my brain hurt to think about! Something else that makes my brain hurt to think about is if I'm wanting that bit of peaking through material to be lacy and ruffling too! Y-i-k-e-s..... oh, dear.... y-i-k-e-s... breathing into holding on, as I watch for your reply... Many thanks, Abbie!!!
thank you for this! I inherited a maxi skirt from my grandmother after her passing late 2021, and I've been wanting to add a slit to it for a while because it's just too restrictive, (plus side slits are just cute!) This was super easy to follow and I think mine turned out great considering I have very little experience with sewing. I'd like to think she'd just be proud of me for doing it myself lol
This is the cutest upcycling story! I'm sure she is proud of you. Have you joined my FB group? You can share photos and ask beginner sewing Q's there and I'd LOVE to see your grandmother's upcycled skirt! facebook.com/groups/diyfashiondesigners
Thanks for the tutorial, most I looked up they were constructing the dress. I need to be sure my idea to put a slit in the front/side of a long store bought was going to work without problems and without adding fabric. My daughter is doing engagement pictures and I suppose she wants a little sexy look to the long prairie style dress she bought. It does have a long ruffle at bottom, which will be interesting....
Really love this video because it is explained very well and i can see exactly how you sewed it because there is a great point of view of the sewing machine! Thanks!
Hello. Loved your video. I have skirt to make a slit in. The skirt is a woollen knit with serged side hems. The client wants a slight opening in the slit. How would I go about finishing the seams. Many thanks
I would either serge or zigzag both of the raw edges after you open the slit as high as the client wants. then follow the steps shown in the video. Does that make sense?
I just got a beautiful new tattoo on my left thigh. I have a few dresses that would look great with a slit to show it off when it warms up outside. Thanks for the video!
How would I add fabric or lace to the slit, To make it a little more modest for my self sometimes I have skirts that the slit might go up a little higher and I’d like to have that back area covered❤
it's a little hard to explain here on YT. Would you please post this Q with a photo of an example skirt in my FB group? I could do a better job of helping you there. facebook.com/groups/startsewingclothes
Thank you for the tutorial! Do you think it'd be possible to do this on a satin skirt? I'm afraid the fabric will look bad with the sewing because of how thin it is (it doesn't have any stitches only a zipper holds it together)
Hi! The overlock stitch can be taken out and then you overlock (2-rows of straight stitches and then the zigzag stitch) and a special overlock presser foot
you can seam rip those zigzag stitches out (they're usually called an overlock stitch) but your seam allowance will probably be VERY narrow, so you may only be able to fold it back one time instead of twice like I show in the video. Otherwise the steps should be the same. Does that make sense? Sorry for the late response, I wasn't getting any notifications from YT for some reason.
How would you deal with a seam that does not finish the edges separately as in your example, but finished them together? When I seam rip that out, it leaves the edge bare and fraying and where the edges come back together, there’s a lump. Would I have to take the skirt apart all the way to the waistline? 😬
it's a possibility. if your fabric is unraveling and you aren't able to do the double fold like I show in the video, you can zigzag stitch the edges (to prevent them from unraveling) and then just fold the edges back one time instead of twice. But if you're getting a bump or bulge from where they meet back together, you may need to completely re-sew the seam to get rid of the bulge. I know this was posted awhile ago, sorry for the late response, my YT notifications got turned off somehow. Have you figure out how to add a slit to your skirt yet?
@@DIYFashionRebel Ah That’s what I figured. Probably not worth the effort in this case. It’s actually a tunic I have that I want to add slits to on either side. So even though I said “waistline”, in my case it would actually be where the body meets the sleeve. Thanks for responding. No worries on timing. I haven’t found an easier solution and the top sits where I left it. 🤷♀️
This technique won't work because it's not on the side seam. It's a different process. I'd have to look into the right way to do that, did you get it figured out?
*What other sewing DIY would you like to learn how to do?*

She is smiling at you from heaven! So sweet you are cherishing the skirt of your beloved-late Grandmother
Thank You! At last a beginner friendly tutorial!❤
Awe, you're too kind! Were you able to add a slit to your skirt?
@@DIYFashionRebel No, but your instructions will certainly help me to add slits to a shirt as well.
Precioso !!!!!! Gracias por mostrar tu arte
Thank you for sharing this video I have a cute long dress that I want to make slits in on both sides now I know how to rip out the seam and resell it❤
amazing! let me know if you have any questions!
I've recently learned how to add side slits to capris, shorts, etc .. this is a great tutorial!
I didn't think about it, but you're right. You can definitely add slits to anything with side seams!
Such nice clear instructions.

Great job!!!
Hopefully I can adjust this dress for my petite self 😂🤞🏾
were you able to adjust your dress?
Great teacher!! Thanks 😀
is there anything else you'd like to learn?

Definitely need that beginners guide tho, it’s been a looong time lol 😅
Very helpful for my long dress Thanks
yay! Let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions :)

omg yes! My sister has a thigh tattoo and that's such a fun way to show it off!
Came here for the same reason :)
That would be beautiful
Thank you 🌹
thanks so much that was wonderful
what project are you going to add a slit to?
Thank you so much for this but what shall I do if I want to have a slit in my dress
You look a lot like drew berrymore ❤

This does work with satin! I just tried it recently for another project and it looked great!
Abby can I do this on a bias cut skirt but not on the seam but off centre front left
the technique for doing this not on the seam is a little different. I have a video for this exact type of slit coming soon.
What if the seams are originally sewn in the zigzag pattern (because the skirt is a bit stretchy)?
Hi! The overlock stitch can be taken out and then you overlock (2-rows of straight stitches and then the zigzag stitch) and a special overlock presser foot

Genial!👏
I’m trying to put a slit in a prom dress in the front to start at top of thigh not at the side seam ??

Dress looks plain. Thought I'd make it look sexier. 😊

What do I do if there is no side seam?
that's a different tutorial that I'll be putting together soon!
@@DIYFashionRebel thank you !
I also need this! ASAP! PROJECT IN ACTION
That’s a seam ripper not a needle threader😂
ahhhhhhh, sometimes I'm so focused on what I'm doing I say the wrong thing :(
I wanna look hot for salsa
Lol
omg yes! that's such a good outfit to use this hack on!
