Instead of having to flip the chisel over to see the 12° line made with the Sharpie, I'd recommend drawing some 12° lines on the piece of MDF so you can align the chisel with those. Then, you just need to keep track grinding to the point of the chisel. If there's concern about inconsistent clamping of the MDF relative to the grinding wheel, add a line at 78° to the 12° lines and in line with the edge of the CBN wheel. Then a straight edge across the wheel will show if the MDF is in the correct clamped position.
Where have you been!!! That's a great idea. Wish I had thought of it. I would have put that in the video
What about doing the first angle, turning the grinder off, pushing the chisel against the wheel and drawing a line on the toolrest. That way you’ve got a reference line for the angle as well as a line for the exact depth of you’re cut. This way it’s easier to make both sides the same.
@@finnbaaren1751 Actually, I was describing a line for the angle at 12° from the face of the wheel (it also is 78° from the side of the wheel).
But, I've also been thinking that a line perpendicular to the 12° lines and 3/4" from the wheel's edge/face intersection would be a reference to where the end of the chisel should be.
Rather than drawing a line, you could attach a fence or a couple of pins or dowels to act as pivot and stopping points.
Few manufacturers offer free instruction on how to build their product in order for the consumer to avoid a purchase. Thanks for being classy, even with the few negative commenters.
Glad to help
Hippie Bob is gone n robs back! Tks for this video
Thanks for watching and commenting
@@RobCosmanWoodworking always
This was awesome to watch. Thanks, Toolmaker Rob and his trusty camera man! :D
How powerful should a grinder be when using one of these CBN wheels? Or will basically anything with a motor be good enough?
Anything with a motor.
I own one of these chisels. I don’t use it very often but I am so glad I spent the money because I don’t think I would even bother trying a half blind dove tail without it.
I know right...when doing half-blind dovetails they are a must have
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing Rob
Thanks for watching
This video is great. Perfect timing. I planned to make one. Thanks. Could I request a short video on a moxon vice solution to supporting dovetail tailboards when marking it out?
Great suggestion!
Definitely gonna try this on one of my lower quality chisels. Thanks a bunch! Also, are ya feeling less neck strain from the lack of hairdo now?
much less strain...quicker showers too
Wow, he got a haircut!
A $27,000.00 haircut!
Rob! what happened to the hair!?
It got cut
How about just a fishtail chisel??
Bevel on the sides make it much easier to cut into the corners.
Note for anyone who may try making one of robs half blind chisels. Do not waste your time or money on the cheap Amazon chisels. They are so soft you'll end up wearing down to the point of not having the original width after a few projects. Not worth the effort on subpar tools. Like Rob says, a good tool allows for good work (or something along those lines)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Rob!
Well said. As I say, cry once and you be happy forever
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!........NOW WE CAN PARTY LIKE ITS 1999!!!!!
Why yes you can!
lmao.....the hair is finally gone.........party time!!!!!......lol
Rob why not just switch the wheel to the other side ? I think if I had to grind one of my IBC chisels like that then I would just purchase a spare blade/furl and ask them to grind it to that shape. I don’t own the wheel.
There’s a reason we are the ones that manufacture these chisels.
Yes that is how we are set up to grind these at our manufacturing station. A CBN wheel on each side of the grinder
How you don’t have a million subscribers puzzles me. I’ve learned skills from you that without this platform would be impossible. Thank you for your generosity!
Appreciate that. Tell your friends to subscribe
Just buy the blade and have IBC do the grinding so you don’t have the expense of buying the wheel. Buying the blade is a way to save on a very expensive chisel.
Let me know how that goes.
@@RobCosmanWoodworkingthe chisels that I have purchased from IBC are excellent quality and expensive but have never requested them to modify any to date. Brian did let me know that the mortise 17 deg. grind was available but I am happy with their standard grind. My guess is that if I attempted to regrind to the dovetail style you show might void the warranty. The next time that I reorder chisels,I’ll discuss it with Brian but at this time but I have no need for that pattern you are grinding. I will definitely let you know when I find out. Always enjoy your videos.🇨🇦👍👨🦳
It is with deep regret that i inform you i will n o longer be able to watch your channel utube is making us sign in and out every time i open your channel up this has nothing to do with you i have learned so so much from you my wood working never would ba at the leval im at now if not with out your help im not the only one in this boat sorry wish u the best

Rob is one of the best at his profession but I am sure with all the content on RUclips that you will find several contributors to help in your woodworking adventure. If I was faced with this situation, I would just continue to sign in as required. Life is full of perceived obstacles and this isn’t a big one. Rob’s content is worth the effort.
Great idea. When I saw the blade the first time I thought it is a joke - a dovetail chisel that looks like a dovetail :-) Hey it is a very smart idea. Thank you very much for sharing it with us!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Who else hits like before the video even starts?
I wish everyone did!!!!!!!
@@RobCosmanWoodworkingSo do I! I find it unconscionable when there are over 5K view and only 400 likes.
It’s so nice to have guys like Rob Cosman and Paul Sellars out there!
The right tool in the hand of the right man with the right haircut :)
Its nice having short hair again
A very useful tutorial. Most folks wouldn't think of grinding their own fishtail chisels.
Glad it was helpful!
I feel like using a left and a right skew chisel is as good if not better.
Try my half blind then give me your opinion
Just buy the dovetail chisel in both sizes.
Do you have a video for full blind dove tails?
thanks
Brilliant. This couldn't have been better timed. I'm just about to dive into cutting five drawers-worth of half-blind dovetails in 100 year old recycled oak and I wasn't looking forward to fiddling around cleaning out the corners with my 3mm chisel. 60 minutes later I've adapted an old 3/4" chisel and have my own half-blind dovetail chisel ready to go. Thanks!
Good luck on your dovetails
A very timely video. I was thinking of asking how to do this on one of your Saturday evening pod casts. Thank you for showing us how to shape the chisel.
You are so welcome!
I'm getting ready to make some traditional wooden planes, let's chisel shape will definitely help me solve some of my problems thank you.
Let me know how your planes come out
It was great watching how you make this innovative chisel for half blind dovetails. I will not even attempt something like that I will just buy it already made expertly by your crew. Thank you for sharing. Take care!👍
Thanks for watching
How cool is that!
Its way cool
Thanks for this! Hey you cut your hair. I was getting used to the longer style.
Not me I much prefer short hair. How do women do it?
If using pine or something soft, do have 17deg bevel on this dovetail chisel?
No, but it would still work. In a half blind you are using this chisel to cut against the gran not with the grain so the 17 degree is not needed
Rob, what is the name of that angle layout tool you used? Looks so much easier than a sliding bevel. I'll be making one of these for my father in law soon, great idea
Always good stuff Rob. When's the next live stream?
we had to skip a week because Frick is committed to another event this Saturday. The live will be back next Saturday
@@RobCosmanWoodworkingThanks for the reply Rob. See you next weekend then.
Thanks Rob. Was going to use a stainless steel grinding wheel 1mm thick, and grinder. Then grind the angle, holding the chisel in a vice
Let me know how it works
@RobCosmanWoodworking will do.
The 1mm stainless steel disk cuts the metal off, so I was thinking it would be better. But moved house so no workshop set up yet
I literally just bought a chisel to make one of these...thanks for the vid.
Glad I could help
