I think the reason why this arc split into 5 seasons is to show us how Gabriel slowly loses it. In S1 he was truly only doing this fot Emilie. But in the later seasons desperation and greed. I think he was still sane in S1. He wasn't even smiling while akumatizing people and talking about their pain. He just wanted to get all that over with in the first season.
I agree. Gabriel js wanted to end it as soon as possible but as time past, he saw how powerful the miraculous were. He wanted the ultimate power the miraculous had, which led to his motive changing and him becoming unstable.
