  • After her own traumatic knee injury that left her unable to navigate her home, Dr. Quatman recovered and became an orthopedic trauma surgeon with an emphasis on geriatric care. In her talk, she shares the exciting work her team is doing to harness community paramedicine to help older adults age safely in their own homes. Carmen Quatman, MD, PhD is the Vice Chair of Quality at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. As an Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon, Geriatric Orthopaedic Specialist and Scientist in Aging Research, Carmen has a special commitment to helping others have the best quality of life possible at all stages in life. While Carmen has spent a large portion of her time in the roles of scientist and surgeon, the role she identifies most with is patient. By the time Carmen completed orthopaedic residency she had 12 surgeries due to a traumatic knee injury. This has given her incredible insight into the patient experience and has inspired her to focus her research and clinical care efforts to transform healthcare delivery. In her free time, Carmen loves spending time with her large extended family at their lake house and spoiling her niece and nephews with fun adventures and memories. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
