@@CadohaAdventures *_ BTW... DO NOT BOTHER ABOUT STARLINK..... BAM.... IT'S GONE FOR SAILORS!!! and here's why _* ruclips.net/video/VMFxgsuIgEk/видео.html
My father was rescued from Dunkirk in operation dynamo. He was one of the last to the beach and absolutely exhausted, but because of these 'little boats' and the men who sailed them, he made it safely back to England. It is not just the boats that should be remembered, but the men who sailed them and the risks they took to save the troops. it was such a feat it should never be forgotten. I wish the team well and hope that they are successful with the restoration.
Glad to hear your father made it back safe and well and you're absolutely right, the story of ALL the men involved is the main thing, the boat is simply the messenger for us all.
This small boat represents part of our history. As a country, we have lost so much of our maritime history, so it is vitally important that we can salvage as much as we can. Great work Dom and I look forward to following your endeavours.
Dominic, you have done a wonderful job in documenting the first step in this dramatic rescue attempt of a former rescue boat! This was well done and is a credit to you in your expanding capabilities in film making and story telling! Since I didn't see any one else filming, I assume the restoration committee didn't hire a documentary team. I hope they realize that the efforts to complete this boat "resurrection" might require some more public support and they will need to let you continue with the job!
Thanks, Brian, that’s kind of you to say. I’m just happy to have anyone think I’ve done them all justice. Believe it or not I actually spent most of the four days in the ‘trenches’ digging and lifting with the rest of them and mostly had cameras set up and dotted around. I hope the little ships enthusiasts enjoy the video and the project too 🙏🏼😊
My father as a 20 year old Royal Engineer was in Belgium attached to General Montgomery's troops. He was behind the retreating troops blowing bridges and roads to delay the advancing enemy long enough for Dynamo to be a success. Fortunately, he managed to get to Brays dune just over the Belgium border and then on one of these little boats and back to blighty, cold, wet and hungry. As you say, lest We Forget ! 🌹🇬🇧
My Grandfather was rescued on one of those little ships from Dunkirk. He spent many hours waiting wast deep in the water for the boats to come in to pick him and others up. When he got on a boat he collapsed and didn't wake up until he was back in a hospital in England.
Wow, how did you get involved with Southern Queen!! When I was a young child she was a tripper boat on the Isles of Scilly! Her and one called the Commodore (now called New Britannic) were both Dunkirk ships. New Britannic is restored. It would be lovely to see Southern Queen back to her old self. Great memories.
Wonderful to see her being restored, I too remember her from many holidays in Scilly, they still run several similar boats on daily trips between the islands and it would be fantastic to see her back there again for a visit or working holiday 😊 great to see you part of the restoration, your enthusiasm will help to reach the pretty ambitious 2 year target 😊 ps as someone mentioned above, worth contacting Leo from Tally Ho channel as he's been through a similar restoration.
While I live in the US, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who values the brave men of the past and their machines. Dom, you are the perfect choice to narrate this effort. Your cautions optimism shines through and the result is excitement and support. A great job by all involved! Wish I could come and help!
Well done. I hope the group can rebuild her. Not just for the remembrance of historic actions, nor even just to honor those who were saved. I hope you succeed in rebuilding Southern Queen because in doing so, you will demonstrate that the will of the people who took her to Dunkirk is still alive in the people who refuse to let the old girl die!
Great work, my personal opinion. We need to preserve as much of our heritage as possible, there are not many of the heroes of WW2 still alive, so any link we have to them is well worth saving.
A great video, and there is no question that the Southern Queen has to be saved. It is a true remembrance of the bravery of those skippers in their small boats who saved so many lives in the early summer of 1940. I look forward to more of your videos (or from somebody else if you cannot do it) as the restoration takes place.
I think we're all echoing those sentiments, Geoff. Here's for hoping the guys can pull it off. Myself and Carly will shine a light as best as we can and even roll our sleeves up as and when needed, but this is going to be a huge undertaking, no doubt.
Seeing this video has made me very happy. As someone whose father and uncle took Little Ships to Dunkirk, I've been interested in the fate of Southern Queen for a number of years. I'm part of a group that approached the owner to try and purchase her, with a view to completing a rebuild and returning her to home waters in Folkestone (very convenient for returns to Dunkirk). With his agreement, we've removed the heavy Gardner engine and are keeping it safe, with the intention of rebuilding that too. It's true, Southern Queen is in poor shape but it's worth saying that, on the basis of my inexpert inspection, her oak frames are in pretty good shape. The hull planking was replaced some twenty-odd years ago with softwood and, having been stored ashore for most of that time, it has dried out and rotted. The frames may possibly be salvageable but, at the very least, will provide the restorers with templates, should they need replacing. First and foremost, what is needed is the funding to save her, as she saved many. We have some ring-fenced funds, raised by our association - The Remembrance Line Association - and we are intending to apply for Heritage Lottery funding in due course. I'm glad to see the Go Fund Me appeal and have just contributed to it. I really hope many more will do the same. Well done, Sailing Cadoha!
Hi John. Wonderful to hear from you. Would you be able to make contact with me or Matt at WM when convenient. It would be very useful to talk about the engine unit. Best wishes. Andy.
Dom, this is an astonishing video. This should be on TV as it is a story to capture the minds of so many especially those few veterans that are still around to tell the story of Dunkirk. As a nation we have lost far too much of our maritime heritage, unlike buildings that seem to get protection and listings historic boats don’t enjoy that luxury, generally, and it is left to dedicated individuals and groups to do the crazy thing and save these vessels. If you have watched any of the restoration of Tally Ho you will appreciate the task that lies ahead. Yes, many of the original boat will need to be replaced and many will say, why not build a replica? Well, as you alluded to in the video it isn’t about the boat per se, it’s about the memory and legacy that lies within the structure, no matter how little of the original is left. I rebuilt a 1937, 48’ wooden fishing boat back in the 80’s/90’s on a very small budget and when there was no internet or RUclips to help. Everyone said I was crazy but the emotion when she was returned to the water was overwhelming. It would be great to see any photos of how she looked originally and I may well have some fittings and gear that may be of help to the project. I will definitely look in to the workshop when I am next in Southampton and I guess Carly will be working on her if she is still at Willet Marine. Best of luck. Andy UK
The good news, Andy seems to be that after a surveyor came down to take a closer look at her yesterday it would appear that roughly 70% of the oak frame looks salvageable and about 30% of the planking also looks good. I don't know about you but I'd say that still falls into the realms of a restored boat rather than a replica 🙏🏻
@@CadohaAdventures Absolutely, if you think about Tally Ho there is very little of the original timber as I understand it but that’s still a restoration/rebuild in my book. It’s more than just the physical part IMHO.

@@CadohaAdventures Dom, There is another Dunkirk boat that was restored called "Massey Shaw Fireboat." I looked it up on Wikipedia and it states it is docked at West India Dock in London and open to the public. I emailed them to confirm it is still at this dock and still open to the public. I'll respond again to you once I hear from them. I wrote a novel that I never published but used this information in my story. And if you ever have a chance to see a 1943 movie called "Mrs. Miniver" with Walter Pigeon and Greer Garson, it shows actual footage of the little boats crossing the channel.
Wow what a fantastic project and I can’t think of a more deserving boat to receive a restoration. Fantastic please keep us updated. And good luck for the reunion in two years 👍
Looks an interesting challenging project. A few years ago I was going to rescue another "Southern Queen" in Sandwich in Kent as it was a 1947 Percy Mitchell Motor Passenger Boat. I live in Southampton and further up the River Itchen I am rebuilding a 1964 wooden Nelson 23 and also restored a 18ft Clinker Launch that was believed played it's part in Operation Dynamo.
So many old abandoned rotting boats left by the wayside. They all have stories. They were once someone's pride and joy, their business, their family get away or in the case of this one a life saver that allowed so many soldiers to live on and in some cases continue their families. There are so many people alive today that wouldn't be if it weren't for these boats. I wish I could save them all so massive thanks to the people who are putting their time and money in to saving this one.
I reckon with enough funding, materials and people that they can indeed get this vessel restored in time. Very glad to see that Southern Queen has been saved.
I imagine the souls of the British Army members saved by the Southern Queen were lending a hand to keep the vessel stable enough for transport. Even those Brits who game up all of their tomorrows for the restoration members today. Excellent presentation, Dominic! :¬) Webhead USA
fantastic project! Cadoha should stay as the filmakers and document the whole process (though it will stop your own personal vlogging). The fact you were able to help and film, shows how much you are into it and how keen you are about the filmiing. It takes good judgement to know when to help, ie, not be in the way, and when to film "which isnt only putting cameras up" i would say. i would watch this for sure! as a former art restorer i can say that it is always about saving the message, time, and zeitgeist of any given era. the object in itself its the messenger.
Excellent project! Talk to Leo at Sampson Boat Company - he always says 2 years to finish the project. It looks like a serious rebuild/restoration which will need a load of effort.Good luck to everyone.
@@CadohaAdventures you ABSOLUTELY need to see what he has done...Leo is a G.O.A.T. ...Tally To was 107 yrs old when he bought her for $1(5 years ago)...she wasn't as bad as Southern Queen but she was getting there and was about to be scrapped...she won the 1927 Fastnet Race and he is hoping to have her finished with the intent of entering her in the 2027 Race. Leo is a bloody genius when it comes to moving and shaping large pieces of wood...he replaced the Keel with two pieces of Purple Heart and spliced them...by himself...she is 44' LWL and 12' Beam. So you know the Keel is huge. Looking forward to your videos of this...thank you for your hard work.
Wonderful, interesting, fascinating and engaging Dominic, this was such a lovely film documenting the journey of this old girl back to her former glory, wow!! Thank you very much for the time and efforts that went into this stunning production.
So thoroughly enjoyed that episode. What a monumental task but so happy to see that she will one day give tribute to her past history. Keep us updated on her progress. Enjoy your channel and hugs to hank.
Most of the timbers look like they need to be replaced. Her story will live on. To me, that is what is important - the memory and a tribute to the people involved in the Little Ships operation.
Hello, I first learned of the little boat rescue at Dunkirk watching the movie " Mrs. Miniver ". It was fascinating. You Lads are doing a great deed. Thank you for having this notion.
Thank you for doing this Yes we are across the pond and this is your history But that operation to rescue the men at Dunkirk is one of the greatest victories of WWII My father flew a B17 in that war, stationed out of Polebrook. The size and effort to defeat Nazi Germany could have never happened without Dunkirk and the Arial Battle of Brittain We have lost so much of that history as the men in it are fast passing. We need these prices to remind us of what great Nations can do when their backs are against the wall
Those who like this sort of boat re-conditioning might also want to watch "Sailing Yaba", A large fishing vessel from Brazil. Every bit of the boat had to be replaced due to worm damage. Another WW2 boat being restored is "Ship Happens", an 80 foot coastal gun ship, being done in the UK, also. I'm not sure if the boat was used in the evacuation, but I suspect that it might have been. I wish you good luck with your project. It looks to be quite extensive since nothing is left and will need a total rebuild.
It is 100% worth the effort of saving her. Not only is it part of our history, it gives today's boat builders the opportunity to work with a traditional boat.

I'll do my best, Shane ☺️
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Such a worthwhile project. May we never forget.
Hi Dom, a wonderful piece of film making. i hope you will be bringing us updates from this worthy project…
I will certainly be keeping an eye on proceedings and sharing the story I hope 🙏🏻
Fantastic job, please please keep us updated with the progress,
So many old abandoned rotting boats left by the wayside.
Just when I thought these boat restorations couldn't get any better, you come along. I'll be watching with great interest 👍
Wow! Incredible documentary film. Congratulations!
I imagine the souls of the British Army members saved by the Southern Queen were lending a hand to keep the vessel stable enough for transport. Even those Brits who game up all of their tomorrows for the restoration members today. Excellent presentation, Dominic! :¬) Webhead USA
I like to think they were too 🙏🏻
fantastic project!
I think you captured what I was trying to say, perfectly. You articulated it better than me ☺️
i think it's great what you guys are doing. she saved people once, now people need to save her.
Excellent project! Talk to Leo at Sampson Boat Company - he always says 2 years to finish the project. It looks like a serious rebuild/restoration which will need a load of effort.Good luck to everyone.
A few people have mentioned Leo actually, I haven't seen his channel but I'm sure some of the guys here have.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Neil 👍🏽
Y r a hero, saving doing what others did not dare or dared dreaming of and ..
Make it reality - bring her home
Excellent, hope we can see more of the project.
W0W! Your documenting skill's are top tier! Thank you for your time & efforts.
Glad I managed to do the team some justice 🙏🏻
So thoroughly enjoyed that episode. What a monumental task but so happy to see that she will one day give tribute to her past history. Keep us updated on her progress. Enjoy your channel and hugs to hank.
That was by far the most amazing vlog you guys have ever done xxxx
20:29 I wish for her a safe journey... and like to thank her for her extraordinary service...
Most of the timbers look like they need to be replaced. Her story will live on. To me, that is what is important - the memory and a tribute to the people involved in the Little Ships operation.
What a fantastic video Dom ! Great to see this old girl and all she stands for being brought back to her former glory. “Least we forget” indeed 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻☺️
Absolutely fantastic - Thanks Dom for documenting this and hope to see the future work.
I certainly hope to keep up with her progress going forward 🙏🏻
Hi , great work and glad the memories of those who tock part in our freedom , will carry on for ever . A really enlightening video Dom .
It was not just a boat, its more a dear friend from the past. Great job!!!!!
Hello, I first learned of the little boat rescue at Dunkirk watching the movie " Mrs. Miniver ". It was fascinating. You Lads are doing a great deed. Thank you for having this notion.
What a great show, great soundtrack too well done!
Thank you for doing this
Yes we are across the pond and this is your history
But that operation to rescue the men at Dunkirk is one of the greatest victories of WWII
My father flew a B17 in that war, stationed out of Polebrook. The size and effort to defeat Nazi Germany could have never happened without Dunkirk and the Arial Battle of Brittain
We have lost so much of that history as the men in it are fast passing. We need these prices to remind us of what great Nations can do when their backs are against the wall
Agreed, we have almost no veterans from that conflict left so it's even more important to preserve as much of their stories as we can 🙏🏻
Absolutely a great episode, and it's important to restore history.
Couldn't agree more, Jane 🙏🏻
Those who like this sort of boat re-conditioning might also want to watch "Sailing Yaba", A large fishing vessel from Brazil. Every bit of the boat had to be replaced due to worm damage. Another WW2 boat being restored is "Ship Happens", an 80 foot coastal gun ship, being done in the UK, also. I'm not sure if the boat was used in the evacuation, but I suspect that it might have been. I wish you good luck with your project. It looks to be quite extensive since nothing is left and will need a total rebuild.
Brilliant video and what a project. Vitally important to keep these historic vessels alive, as a reminder of how lucky we all are. Great stuff.
This is a fabulous undertaking! Thanks to everyone involved ❤🎉
It is 100% worth the effort of saving her. Not only is it part of our history, it gives today's boat builders the opportunity to work with a traditional boat.
Incredible project guys, I live in Dover and this is so close to home and our immediate history. Donating.
Amazing, great job Dom. Best wishes to the restoration team.
You can do it! When you see what the couple with "Ship Happens" are doing with an old WWII boat, definitely you can do it!
Wow this was amazing to see. What a fantastic story and well done to all who were involved. I hope you manage to document this. Epic stuff
I hope so too!
What another unbelievable documentary Dominic. You really are very good at what you do. Thank you for taking the time, not just onsite for all the hours of footage, but for the unseen hours on the PC afterwards👏👏. I hope you all get back on the water very soon ⛵🐶
No worries, Terry, it was just the right thing to do ☺️
Brilliant job guys. Looking forward to seeing more of the restoration and hopefully see her make the journey.
awesome storytelling, awesome history, awesome charity. Thank you Dominic to document this first step!
An eminently worthwhile project.
Great documentary lets hope you can find the support and funds to rebuild this wonderful vessel best of luck
How fantastic is this project?!? I will love to watch for updates as the project progresses.
I will do my level best to stay abreast of how she progresses and keep you all updated.
Love & admire this content, please continue to follow and post! Thx
Great start. You will have to carry on documenting this restoration for the future.
Dom i salute you sir for bringing this to our attention !! Wonderful
brilliantly documented Dom, you’re a natural at this documentary lark and easily compare to the best we see on mainstream TV. The project is awesome and thanks for alerting me/us to the reunion. I dare say there will be many other boats out there being restored in time for that epic adventure back to France.
Hi, I take my hat to you guys that’s wonderful and to rescue old wooden boats. I’ve been following another RUclipsr that is rescuing a yacht called telly-ho Which is 115 years old. It is nearly completed and will be going into the water in the next 6 to 12 months. Keep up the good work. Love your videos Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia from the big island
I have one big issue with this video. Like the rest of them. So good and just not long enough. 😊😊 A seriously good video and so well put together. Really looking forward to seeing how this amazing project develops, really looking forward to the next one. Well-done.
Many thanks Dominic, thoroughly enjoyed that and have to say with a tear forming in my eye. Thank goodness there are still folk out there that are passionate when it comes to preserving our history, whether it be on land or at sea. Good luck to the team with this ambitious project and I hope they get the public support they deserve, no doubt helped considerably with this excellent video from your good self.
The team at Willett Marine are so passionate about what they do that it's infectious. I certainly hope I caught some of that in the video 🙏🏻
What a cracking film. Great work Dom, thoroughly enjoyed that one
... thank you all for remembering ... as you closed "Lest We Forget" ... please keep documenting this restoration of this little piece of most important history ...
I will indeed be sure to keep updated and visiting this amazing passion project and I'll be sure to share any update with everyone too. 🙏🏻
Look forward to following your progress from down under, Aus.
Cheers.
You're a superb presenter Dom. A wonderful slice of history like Southern Queen will always be worth saving - it's unique!
Will you be following the restoration? It would make a great series of videos!
Glad you enjoyed it and yes I'm going to be checking in on developments for sure 👌🏼
fantastic what a beautiful shape she is. i wish you all the best and really look forward to seeing progress
Your video making skills got me to subscribe. Apart from historical importance, it is your personal input to this video that got me, and I love saving the un salvageable, just like me.
Great work old Chaps 🙏
What a challenge this project is! I hope that at least a few original parts can be used in the rebuild. Best of luck.
Crumbs! What skill, dedication, commitment, and self sacrificing efforts on the part of all those team members. Well done Dom and everyone. Very interesting episode too mate👍.
I just lifted and carried some things, dugs some holes and filmed the guys, they're the heroes of this story, trying to preserve the hero's stories from the past 🙏🏻
@@CadohaAdventures managed to bang you finger though Dom…. 😂. Brilliant filming and efforts from all.
Good to see this restoration, can’t wait to see her on the water again 👍retired lifeboatman
Great story telling as always!!!
... must says hats off to those that have vision to save and restore historic items such as this and locomotives, planes, vehicles etc. you know what I mean. The hours they invest into something that they may not even live to see the final outcome .. the phrase that comes to mind "those that plant trees of which they will not live to experience the shade" .... have to say sure impressed with how well equipped the team is, and the foresight to be so prepared right from the guy that has the van with the expresso machine, had a good chuckle when I saw that, to all the other tools and variety of steel for fabricating ... did you set up a time lapse for this and will you set up several time lapse for the entirety of the reclamation of her glory .... thx for the share Dom ... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
Ha ha, nothing says prepared like a workman with a decent coffee machine onboard. An essential bit of kit for those 12hr + days 👍🏽😜
@@CadohaAdventures ..... agree on all counts and alleviates the necessity of running of to get coffee ... thx for the response .... make it an exceptional week .....
Well documented, Dom !
I am watching this here in Australia on ANZAC day, indeed Lest we forget.
Great rescue project and these boats were sooo important back in the war. Sending the best of luck for her! Your gonna need it I think! 😂 it’s like Triggers broom.. 15 new brushes, 12 new handles.. but it’s the same broom! 😂
It can never be about 'worth' it's many things but not money. Those that want to destroy our history today will never see why its so important to the majority of good people and why its so important to those in the future. Hopefully some young people will get involved in the boat building/renovation too. Great presentation dom.
No words Dom, no words can do this video justice ❤
Wow this is cool:) I’m looking forward to seeing you do wonderful things to this wonderful boat that has such a beautiful History 👍
Thanks
I am looking forward to this restoration seeing an old neglected vessel like that sailor Island Boys heart so much good
