The world's most deluxe country.
Passing through Eze sur Mer, but were not stopping because we are heading to Monaco, the world's second-smallest country, after the Vatican, less than a square mile in size. It's been a sovereign nation since 1861 when it gained independence from France, and it's a full member of the United Nations -- small, but filled with beautiful contrast, one of the world's most deluxe places.
The Tourist Information office in the train station is a great place to stop and pick up some brochures and you can get a free city map here and you'll find they are very helpful.
And yet despite this diminutive size, there is contrast in Monaco: You've got the Old Town and you've got the new ultra-modern town...you've got the waterfront and you've got the hillside...there are beautiful flowers and gardens and historic sites.
This program will focus on the two main areas for the visitor: The old town and Monte Carlo with the casino and elegant shopping area.
Monaco is more than twice as densely populated as the second most crowded country, which is Singapore. That's with a population density in Monaco of about 47,000 people per square mile, compared to Singapore with about 20,000 people per square mile.
Now this is really crowded compared to other European countries. For example, the UK has got about 700 people per square mile, Italy 500 people per square mile. So we are talking about a very crowded and packed in place, this Monaco, and yet they manage it amazingly well. Perhaps this is a model for the other big cities of the world, showing how to grow and how to plan your city.
Several cities in the world have got twice the population density of Monaco, including Dacca, the most crowded city in the world, the capital of Bangladesh, Manila and Mumbai. Other cities that are more crowded include in India, Delhi and Calcutta, also Hong Kong, and Paris is more densely populated; Bogotá, Karachi, Cairo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, Manila and even Paris. And yet Monaco does a very good job of organizing the people who live here into beautiful buildings and lovely neighborhood, so they're doing a great job in handling that population. The might even be considered a model for the rest of the urbanizing areas of the world.
Monaco gained its independence back and 1489, and had a protectorate with Spain for about 100 years and, and then with France, and then with Sardinia up until 1860.
Monaco became independent from France in 1861.
And today it's a sovereign nation represented in the United Nations.
It's surrounded by France and there is a military arrangement where it's defended by France.
Monaco is quite active on the international scene with consulates in 72 different countries, and within Monaco, there are 65 countries that have embassies, along with 75 nations with consular offices, so this is by no means a small, isolated place. It's very much part of Europe.
The economy will surprise you. You might think that all of the revenues are gained from the gambling casino and related gambling ventures, but actually gambling represents only 3% of the nation's revenue of the nation's revenue, the GDP.
The present casino was first inaugurated in 1863 and gradually grew an expanded ever since. It's an elaborate structure with the principal façade fronting the town in the south façade overlooking the sea. The earliest portion was rebuilt in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the grand opera house in Paris.
Of course gambling was very important back in the 19th century when it was just getting started. The first casino was opened in 1856.
The principal entrance of the casino is between two towers with domes of colored tiles, and flanked by statues of the Seine and the Mediterranean.
The south façade has three arcades with Venetian mosaics and two slender towers, and niches at the side with statues representing music and dance.
To arrive on the terraces of Monte Carlo at twilight on a springtime or autumn evening is one of the great episodes in one's life.
This must be the best travel guide video I have ever watched. Thanks for sharing.
I've watched a lot of videos on Monaco. This one is the best. It is very informative. Thanks for posting. I shared it on Facebook.
First time we went, my mom took one look at the underwhelming storefront areas, and said, "For THIS, we could have gone to Great Neck." And honestly, decades later, there STILL is a resemblance.
Bunny Biedenharn pray tell how stunning are storefronts supposed to be?
You can’t ask for any better than this. I could adapt 💯..😍
I really enjoy the down to earth point of view of these tours from city to city, Monaco is no exception.. amazing views along with valuable information! Cheers!
Thank you for the video of Monaco. I missed Monaco so much. And I learned more about their economy now.
grace chang I'm glad you watched it all to get to the information I packed in about the economy, instead of just showing you postcard shots. I typically have many nice visuals I want to present, so I do the research about a place to have something interesting to say while the pictures roll by, talking about the urban plan, the economy, a bit of history, where to shop and eat, cost of living, and especially where to walk. Monaco is a good example of a place that has a lot more going on than you might realize in a brief visit, while rolling dice in the Casino.
Yes I went there last year during summer. It was so happening at that season. The overlooking view of French Riviera and walking to old town Monaco. And I took a bus from Nice to Monaco for only 1.50 euro. Such an experience. It was wonderful :)
grace chang That is so true, such an amazing bargain to take a round-trip scenic public bus from Nice to the world's most-expensive place, for 3 euro!! You can even find reasonable prices for lunch, then walk around, take the city bus for several more euro, enjoying the trillion-dollar surroundings for free. I hope they have finished that major reconstruction of shops and park in front of the Casino, it was a real mess in 2013, but I'm sure will look beautiful when done.
@@denniscallan It's been done up now, although MC is ALWAYS under construction. Now the part left of the park is being renovated, together with the hospital. Lot's of work being done there, as well as the roads leading into and out of the city. Been comming there for 42 years (born there and visit every summer) and even I get lost sometimes when things have changed yet again )
Fantastic video, lots of insights, tips an history. I enjoyed it.
Fantastic video of Monaco !!!

Very beautiful, I hope to go there someday. Thank you for your video
When I visited Monte Carlo many years ago our tour group saw the crypt of Princess Grace.
came across this videos on youtube....years since i visited Monaco...awesome job my friend, many great memories-thank you!
This was an absolutely wonderful video and an authentically touristic perspective that I greatly appreciate. You have a lovely narration style and the historical facts included provided great insight. I have been fascinated with Monaco since childhood and videos such as this inspire my ambition to visit. Thank you, sir. This was truly a gem.
Best vlog video on Monaco I've seen, thank you!
Absolutely the best video I have seen of places in Europe!! You gave me a guided tour and actually talked about what I was seeing!! Thank you!!!

Beautiful, thanks for this vid:-)
Beautiful
good documentation .......
You did a GREAT job with this video! Thank u SO much!!
well put together thank you for uploading
Very dense, very packing them in, no mention of Pakistan within the density calculation. Joking aside, very beautiful surroundings, very Swiss or perhaps more Austrian. I really must remember, to read, a book, on the subject of what that other 97% is built from, maybe check out that one star hotel price and visit.
I know William Morris (born 1834, moved on 1896) visited the area, 20 or so years before it became what the Lords of Westminster helped make it today, leading to the Unification of Italy and the building of the first protestant church in Rome. Bonne nuit néanmoins.
Amazing view of Monaco
THANK YOU for a great video and guide. Please do more videos like this for other destinations.
Bellissimo!
Thank you for the nice video, as always informative with lots of tips. 👍
Awesome!! video thank you for sharing
When I visited Monaco many years ago the cost of parking our tour bus for two hours was $90.
Why on earth would you visit the Cote d'Azur in a tourbus and worry about the parking fee?
Fue lo más hermoso que vieron mis ojos
how about the oceanographic museum? the princes had a great impact and most of monaco history is in it
Great video and very nice way to explain the history of Monaco. Thank you for post.🤗
Congratulations for your national holiday today Monaco
Muy precioso Principado en el centro Europeo.
Greetings from Miliana Algeria
C le + beau pays du monde. C très propre.
Thank you!

Great video!
Again very helpfull
very nice video
Great video Dennis. Some what reminds me of Sorrento in Italy... with its water side location and touristic shops. But a much bigger marina in Monaco. Obviously much a more on grandeur style than Sorrento as well. Might put it on the list...
Very nice . . . :-)
Perfect!
This is very helpful!!
Excellent Video :) Well done
AMAZING
Love your vids

Dear Dennis, thank you very much for all your movies. I plan to visit Monaco from Nice (through cruise ship).May i ask where is the bus stop for bus #100 to Monaco? Thanks and God bless
In Nice the bus stop is next to Place Garibaldi, just northeast of the Old Town.
Thanks again Dennis
Lovely, if you could give us more...
"Little green traffic circle"... It's a roundabout.
So what? Looks like a little green circle to me. Damn arrogant europeans. 😀😀😀
Thank you! Very informative. I wonder how much I'd actually need to visit?
I NEED TO MOVE HERE LOL !!!
Papp Sebastian Georgian You need atleast €500,000 Euros to deposit in a Monaco bank AND atleast €500,000 Euros to invest in real estate in Monaco in order to get residency. €500,000 Euros though will only get you a parking spot in the edge of the country.
Monaco's revenue was 95% gambling before Rainer III's reign. He dropped it to 3%.
Which is a good thing, isn't it? If gambling is your only source of income, one may also lose (comes with teh gambling territory)... Right now, the city could survive without the casino's.
love your video. is ot worth staying in monte carlo for three days?
What bus did you take from Nice and then name our line that took you up the hill to old Town. Thank you
The reason why many wealthy people and us mere mortals lol, take rides on buses or public transport, it's because, 'Europe' , as a whole, 1) it's a different culture, 2) public transport it's far cry to other nations, 3) it's cheaper. 4) its an excellent system on which to travel in to protect our environment. 5) Europe, unlike the U.S is not an automobile culture. In short, Walking, Cycling, Buses, Trams and Trains, it's a European thing.
Gibcalifornia That is so true, and reflects other positive aspects of European culture, based on life in cities and villages with sufficient urban density to support those excellent points. Not too crowded, but with enough people around to support neighborhood cafes and shops, connected by pedestrian paths and with room for bikes and buses. America could learn a lot from that, as we already see in some of our cities.
Gibcalifornia You are correct 100%. Americans just don't understand that mentality. They will get in their big cars to go to the corner store to buy bread. In Europe people will get up in the morning and walk to get their bread. I love the whole European lifestyle more simple, but people live better. A healthier life work balance.
Calm down. The government purposely built the US like so to lessen the walking. Also, unlike Europe, where most people are one people, the US is a melting pot of races. And these minorities constantly kill for no reason.
Pretty Cool!!!
Billie Little: So Awesome European Lifestyle!!. I Live in America and I don't Understand the Mentality here either.
It's a principality
I want to go monaco😣
Wao
what is the number of the bus you took in Monaco? thanks
❤️🎈🎉
If there are only 7000 citizen residents, does that mean most Monagasques live abroad (would make no sense because there is no income tax in Monaco) or does it mean that only 7000 Monegasque citizens are left in existence? How easy/hard is it to get citizenship in Monaco?
That's about all the true citizens they have, actually about 8,500 -- other residents are not citizens, and yes, a lot of Monegasque are so rich they surely have other homes outside their little enclave. Native Monégasque people are actually in the minority in the country, making up less than a fifth of Monaco's population. Monégasques were born Monégasques. It’s the blood line that matters. Of course, there are exceptions, for example, you can ask for Monégasque citizenship after 10 years of being married to a Monégasque. Or if you’ve done something special for the principality, the Prince might consider offering it to you as a special favor.
denniscallan if I recall correctly, Monaco does not allow dual nationality.
Oops...Grace Kelly didn't suffer a stroke while driving. Her 17 year old daughter Stephanie was driving and she is the one who lost control, tragically killing her mother in the crash!
I have taken this bus with m'y daughters and his boy friend but it was 1 euro before !!!
Where do they bury their dead? It seems so packed
they have two graveyards in Monaco. you can see grace Kelly's grave I think
+Ben Wass Yes, you can see Grace Kelley's grave in the cathedral.
denniscallan that's cool I might be staying in nice so it would be good to see her grave and
+denniscallan did you see her grave?
+Ben Wass Yes, the grave of Princess Grace is in this video at 8:35
👍
There's around 38.000 poeple when you travelled there. By 2025 it will be 42.000. A good 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment will cost you 10 to 30 million dollars a pop.
when i been there , i stay close to train station in Nice, and was easy to take the train, and faster:d....any way the best place After Canada ,is Monaco
Does the casino have penny slot machines?
These high square flat blocks aren't beautiful at all!
concrete forest
Подскажите где остановиться на день два в Монако бюджетно, я проездом .. или рядом есть дешевле отели другой город и парковки есть бесплатная?
there are many hotels in Nice, one hour away (question was Tell me where to stay for a day or two in Monaco in a budget, I'm passing through .. or nearby there are cheaper hotels another city and parking is free?)
Monaco would have zero money if it were not for the million dollar dowry that "prince" Ranier demanded from Grace Kelly (from Pennsylvania), which he subsequently invested..
Os pobres deslumbrados colocaram pantufas para não danificar o solo de Mônaco?
we drove in monaco. BIG mistake :(
Tiny city, lots of cars... Best way is to go by foot, scooter or bus... Or avoid the daytime (nowadays)
is monaco just full of rich people or are there actually working class people in the city
I believe many people come to work to Monaco from France due to higher salary in Monaco. Monaco's residents can hardly be named "working class" in its well-known interpretation.
How's the weather in May there?
Perfect, a great time to go.
i see no cams
I wish I was monacese (sorry if it's wrong)
olny12 Monagasque* The term Monacan is unofficially used for Non-Citizen residents.
56 people per acre
Where r u from
+جيمي I live in Honolulu, but travel a lot in Europe leading tours of Hawaii people, like right now, I'm enjoying London and heading into a British Isles trip, shooting lots of new video which will show up on my channel later in the year.
landmark location of monaco
3:32 you meant to say THIRTY eight thousand people?
yes, thank you for paying attention...I was doing a spontaneous stand-up without notes as usual, mostly correct with some tour-guideese slipped in. Anyway, Monaco is dense but delightful, amazing how they can create such quality of life (money helps) in such a tight space (coastal beauty also helps). I was just there a few weeks ago shooting more luscious scenes I will share later.
All the Revenue Comes from REAL ESTATE & TOURISM.
shlom to the delinquents forever!-sorry
Vegas is nuthin compared to Monaco.
It's ridiculous that people don't wear warm hats in winter. 40% of body heat leaves through the head. No common sense apparently...
oervillage
Complete superficiality inside a Casino..
