When you lose your residence, you can't find work. You no longer have an address and employers consider the lack of an address as a liability. They will look for someone they perceive as "more stable". If you can't afford mobile service, you don't have a phone number either. But it's worse than that. There's no place to go to the bathroom. Public rest rooms are not always available and even if they are, many are locked at night. You can't shower to look decent for an interview. You can't eat healthy because you don't have a stove or refrigerator. It's difficult to get unemployment payments, welfare, food stamps or anything else if you don't have an address. If you sold your car to pay a couple a months on the mortgage or rent, now you can't get around either. Many places have limited bus service. The danger to women and children is significant. When you are homeless, the vulnerable become even more vulnerable-they are targeted because if something happens to them, no one knows and no one cares. If you try to sleep under a bridge or in an alley, even if you are not assaulted, you may be picked up and thrown into jail for vagrancy. In some states, you can't even sleep in your car (if you still have one)-it's against the law. In many cities the Food Bank (if there is one), employment security office, and the welfare agency are at opposite ends of town and, in most places, they do not provide photocopiers or paper or stamps or the other things a homeless person needs to create a résumé to look for work (these agencies are not well coordinated and do very little to aid with job hunting). It's almost as though the system is designed to KEEP the unemployed from finding honest work. Most people do not want welfare, they want a job. Most people don't want to steal... but they have to eat to survive and even if they don't steal for themselves, many will steal (if they have to) to feed their children. I've been saying for years that unemployment can happen to anyone... even the most industrious and the most educated. People laughed and replied that this was nonsense. Maybe now they will see how and why this can happen... to anyone. John Oliver, thank you for bringing people's attention to the subject of evictions. It is going to be landslide catastrophe and we need to start looking for solutions NOW. Hopefully you have opened a few eyes. As a society, we are only as good as how we treat those who are in need.
I got critically ill 20 years ago, and got evicted. Someone I had worked for when i was healthy gave me a car that they were about to donate to PBS, and that was my home for nearly a year, until someone else got me a place to live, because all you said was true. Three people drove me around, and four government employees helped me heal. I'd be dead now, otherwise. I couldn't do it again. I'd rather be dead. It was too hard then, It would be impossible now. I'm still disabled. I couldn't live on the street. Thank you for writing this.
Even here in North-Western Europe things are going awry. I took in a friend who became homeless just as the crisis began. The Social Services Department at the local municipality has been closed, but every 3 months people on welfare have to fill out a Status Form, which the municipal government is supposed to mail them. And we're talking snail mail here, not email. There is no online Status Form that people can fill out, it has to be on paper. So you can guess where this is going. Due to the Intelligent Lockdown as they like to call it, the SSD forgot to send out the Status Forms to people. And with no current status in the system, the computer has automatically stopped the welfare payments. Yet despite the SSD admitting in writing that they messed up, their solution is to just mail people their Status Form and they'll recieve the backpay next month. It wouldn't be funny if it wasn't so damn Kafkaesque. Now my employer (who has been making a mint selling social distancing stickers) does still pay me. I can work from home. But I barely make enough to foot my own bills and help cover for my friend's cost of living. But the same thing happened to my neighbour, who is a single mom with 5 kids and the worst ex-husband you can imagine. Now I know that both my neighbour and my friend will repay me at the end of the month when the SSD gets their act together. But meanwhile I am sitting at nearly my maximum overdraft, just because I am not a heartless bastard who can stand idly by and watch little kids go hungry. It's a good thing people are getting the welfare in 9 days, because I can't afford to feed 8 people much longer on my part-time income. And I'd hate to have to dip into my long term savings and face interest penalties just because I am trying to be able to look at myself in the mirror each morning. I may be a bleeding heart socialist, but I can't wait for the courts to reopen so I can sue the city for the interest I had to pay on these overdrafts. It's ridiculous that I have to go into debt to fix a problem caused by some pencil pusher who can't be arsed to make half an effort it themselves.
It's truly astonishing how short-sighted people can be. In their blind pursuit of money they justify doing the most horrendous and despicable things to people.
This is what's going to happen, people will get evicted when they can't pay rent, landlords will lose their properties when they can't pay the mortgage, and banks will get a bailout at the end, but not before rich people buy all the cheap bank stocks after they announce bankruptcy.
Don't forget the same rich people buying up the rental properties through REITs, and then your landlord will be a soulless corporation instead of a human being.
And then we get angry and introduce the super rich people to a history lesson on the French Revolution. Probably not but eventually people will get fed up enough to do it. How many times are they gonna spit in our eyes and we do nothing about these oligarch bastards? They’ve robbed the country and abused people repeatedly and yet people still believe in the system, that can’t last forever.

"The only thing worse than knowing your going to spend another day stuck under the same roof, is not knowing that." That really hit me and made me appreciate the roof I have over my head.
Yes! Me too.... Puts it in perspective. I am sooooo lucky. Social housing, rental support, and a lovely small house with a garden for my dogs. No debts and not by far, but just enough money to live from. For which I am more and more thankfull.
That’s American capitalism for you. In other developed nations who are also capitalists, this wouldn’t happened. They have laws to protect this from happening and their citizens have a different way of thinking.
Sorry to say this, but again a problem that I'm too European to understand. The problem is that people can lose their jobs so easily in the US. Here in Germany, the government funded part of people's wages so their employer doesn't have to fire them (and doesn't need to find new people and train them when this is over). As a result, unemployment rates only increased a little bit during the pandemic, nowhere near the spike the US has seen. People can still pay their rent, and neither landlords nor tenants have anything to worry about. But these ideas sound like communism to some Americans. This isn't communism. Germany and most European countries are capitalist, but with an added safety net that no one can slip through. Nobody has to worry about medical bills, housing, or their basic needs even if they are unemployed. This has worked out for us really well, also economically. Whatever the hell the US are doing is not sustainable. Edit: Here's a report saying that so far hardly anyone couldn't pay their rent due to the pandemic www.nw.de/lokal/kreis_herford/buende/22793205_Bisher-nur-wenige-Mietausfaelle-trotz-Corona.html
Add to that, you can't get proper healthcare unless you pay a premium every month to private companies... you think people can afford that now as well? If you suggested to most people from the US that they should get social healthcare, they would call you a communist. What you might not understand as a European is that in public school in the USA, they teach children that the US is the best country in the world in everything, the only true democracy, and that socialism is basically the same thing as communism. This is why there is so much confusion. Ultimately what it ends up doing is pitting the people against ideas that would greatly help them without having to change anything about the political structure. In the US, public school is pretty much nothing more than indoctrination camps for young people, and most people can't afford private school so they send their children to be brainwashed into screwing themselves over such that the government wins and the people suffer. The funniest part is that in the US, we do many things that communist dictatorships also have done. For instance, the "pledge of allegiance" if you look that up you will see the full pledge, but I remember in public school, it was required that we stand and face the flag in the schoolroom every morning with our "hands over our hearts" (after WWII it was changed cause it used to be the fascist salute)... and pledge allegiance to our nation's flag. Songs like "I'm proud to be an american" and the national anthem were highly present as well.
Dont forget about the law published in early Corona Virus times, that forbids to evict if you cant pay due to corona related money problems until September....
You are missing the point. In America a safety net is seen as a problem because some black or brown folk might get it. The entire reason trump got elected is because America would rather literally burn the whole country down and kill 120,000 Americans rather than have one black president out of 44. That’s the point. This isn’t a flaw it’s a feature. Remember Americans voted for all of this. Every politician in this clip was elected or hired by someone who was elected to do exactly what they are doing. Michael Sequerth I can see where you’re coming from Michael. This country very much values the hard-working individuals who strive to do great things, and I hope you yourself are one of those individuals. A country where there are winners and losers. However, as a civil society I believe that it is necessary for all people to have a roof over their head. Whether it be the roof of a mansion or of a homeless shelter. Those who can’t afford the roof can be deemed (for lack of a better term) lazy, but it shouldn’t be to the point where we just let them die because they didn’t work for a roof. We shouldn’t give them a mansion but we can a least give them a roof so that they may hopefully one day work hard and earn their own mansion. It’s called affordable housing. Whether you’re a winner or a loser every life has value and is capable of contributing to something. It’s just more difficult for some people to recognize that this country values hard work and so we should in our own ways help those people to see their own value. And it all starts with a roof over that person’s head.
@Michael Sequerth problem is value is relative. Fact is you generate a value of 17k a year for Google with your data, and that's just Google, RUclips, Amazon, Facebook, Steam, Netflix... They all earn from the value of your data on top of that 17k for Google. Depending on how wide a net you have thrown your data (unknowingly) into, you could have EASILY been earning 30k+ for the companies mining your data. You HAVE intrinsic value by being a consumer, or rather the retail and service industries simply sell you as a product to the brands they carry. The idea that you have to work to be giving value to "society" is actually a joke when you realize that the hardest working people make less money than if they just sat at home being a full time "product" of data mining Sure, it's a bubble, but the bubble bursting will likely be more a result of over valuing of the data, the data of a homeless person with no spending money is still worth something, but if the economy crashes, so does this bubble and all the companies relying on that mechanism will crash too.
It’s not just hard to get housing with an eviction on their record, it’s also hard to get a job, a loan. It affects your whole life and it’s a downward spiral that’s very difficult to get out of.
@@castor9683 nope, not even that will do it. You have to be born to the right people who already have money. There is no such thing as being good enough. Upward momentum in the US is non existent.

Even if you plan for a rainy day, how far would different people be able to plan?? 3 months might be a bit too far for some. But the same can be said for owners, they should be able to lose 3 months rent without going broke. Even if they evict, who can afford to move in?? This isn't something only happening to their own tenants, but everyone else's too, so they could potentially lose more money and have unhappy tenants if they evict because of this, as they won't immediately have a tenant with cash flow to move in afterwards, but if they let people stay, they could let the lack of rent slide for some months and be supportive of the tenants, they might end up more than happy to pay a little extra in rent to make up for some of the loss then and pay back the generosity.
Yea. Because the regular people aren't paying for their campaign donations. There is a website called opensecrets.org I think where you can find out who does pay them. Like Mitch McConnnell who over the past 5 years has received over 31 million in campaing donations of which he spent only over 16 million, most of which from companies like united parcel sevice
They gave the stimulus out to companies and mandated that it only be paid to employees to keep them on staff. If the money was spent on anything else, the grant became a loan they had to repay. That was the extent of their help. So they mandated businesses shut down...shamed people anxious to reopen, and now are shocked lots of people are facing eviction...since shocker...businesses can’t shut down and keep paying people. When the death rate is now .26%....26 out of every 10,000 cases and primarily old people...we should all be beside ourselves at how idiotic all of this has been because this is just the beginning of what’s coming.

This is precisely what I have said. All of those saying: “why didn’t you have money stashed away?” who don’t ask the corporations getting bailed out why they didn’t have several months of profits stashed away to cover all operating expenses are hypocrites. What’s their answer? That it’s not that easy? I know, right.
Agree on corporations, but not on the landlords. Landlords are often just people who have property to rent out, and the plan was to collect rent, or find new tenants to collect rent. The government coming in and saying you can't find new tenants when the others aren't paying you would be like the government telling you your job doesn't have to pay you and you can't go find another one.
If you do not save any money then you are living beyond your means or made previous choices that allow you to not do this. America is the land of opportunity. You work your ass off, be creative, start a side business. Whatever it takes but crying to the GOV is not the answer because they now have even more power on your lifes. Trust me you dont want to live in that world because i came from it
We've been getting 2000$/month each since the pandemic started. Businesses have been getting tens of thousands depending on their situation. The whole thing is federally funded. Say what you will about our Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau, we're doing fine right now. The extra debt is not going to be anywhere near as bad as the economic fallout of not helping our citizens would have been.
@Justin Are you sure that both work just because you read it in one whole article (and that was about England’s leader, not Canada’s)? I’m not trying to be argumentative or anything at all! Just wondering why we would call our country’s leader the same thing we call our provincial leaders...? That would be both confusing and inaccurate, in my opinion.
"It's never fun throwing a single mother and her three kids out on the streets, it's just business" Can you imagine being able to say that during a crisis where a lot of people can't even work if they wanted to, and thinking you have a good point? Can you imagine saying that and NOT realizing how soulless that sounds?

There needs to be a balance. I would say that companies do NOT need as much as they are given, but if companies don't stay afloat those people would lose their jobs permanently. It really sucks
Saving money requires sufficient income to save money, plus even if you save, it doesn't mean you'll have enough for the rainy day. I myself spent over a month sick before COVID-19 hit, then right after I got over that, I got ill *again* with COVID-19 symptoms (but wasn't tested), which took over 2 months to recover from. There went my rainy-day fund.
As an American, there's never been a point in my adult life where I wasn't paying over half my income on rent. I've also always had at least one, usually several roommates--otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford a shelter at all.
@@nolin132 Hey anime avatar, there's a reason people live in the city: that's were the jobs are. It's not always (or even rarely) a feasible option to just "get out of the city" because it either means fewer available job opportunities or spending another 1-4 hours commuting every day.
While it is shitty for landlords to raise the rent out of greed sometimes it’s not really their responsibility to save since they are the ones providing a service
@@lucasbrantley6453 The point of my remark is that tenants usually can't save because if they had any disposable income, landlords would simply raise rents. Whether we assign tenants or landlords an abstract "responsibility to save" won't have the slightest effect on that. To put it another way, much is said about how rights come with responsibilities, but rather more should be said about how responsibilities must come with at least the rights necessary to discharge them. Giving tenants a responsibility and a right to save would radically change the rental market: rents would have to be much lower, and landlords would be taking much less so-called "risk".
yarnpower yup! And that guy is living it. I’m not a landlord but I understand that they have mortgages too. They can’t bear all of the burden. You have to start with the banks or shit rolls down hill.
My rent keeps going up every year to help with “maintenance fees of the aging property.” So essentially I pay more money every year for a shittier apartment.
Same here. Oregon legislation newly introduced allowances for property owners to raise rent once a year based on a percentage of the increase of the property value. Now renters who wouldn’t normally raise your rent nearly so often or at all, are leaving money on the table if they don’t follow up yearly. Nobody leaves money on the table.
"It's never fun throwing a single mother and three kids out on the street" ah yes that relatable experience that we all just have to go through from time to time in life
"It's just business..." If you find yourself justifying your actions with the go to movie villain line... congratulations, you've transcended from asshole to villain.
Back in the '80s I worked in Silicone Valley. When it took off the rents rose so fast that there were 2 income families that were living under bridges. We thought that was horrible. Now let's throw in a plague. Thanks Donnie. Are we tired of winning yet?
Dominik Es I mean, what if they were triplets? What if the woman had all three childern *and then* her partener left? What if she never wanted children and the condom broke? What if something happened to whatever she was taking for birth control? What if the mother was raped and couldn't get an abortion? I'm just saying, things can happen that are (for the most part) out of your control. Although I do agree with you on that if the woman being thrown out was being neglectful and kept making bad choices when she could have picked better options, that would be on her. But the children don't deserve to go through thay though.
In that case, I bet it's "never fun" for him to do anything. It's just business!! Holy crap this guy's game room has got to be nothing but 4 blank walls with a couch and some nasty rug.
@@name_0 this. Shit happens. My dad died when I was a kid, and my mom. didn't have the same resources afterwards. Was it her fault that my dad got terminal cancer? Fuck no.
I have tenants that I have reduced the rents for, also I have requested them to NOT pay any rent until the situation gets better and they are back on their feet. It saddens me to see how landlords think of "business" and forget about humanity! We are all in this together.
You’re one of the good ones, your tenants will appreciate your kindness and you will gain their respect in turn. Thank god their are still people like you out there, but for all of the landlords like you out there, there are still single mothers being evicted.
Not every landlord can afford to do this, though, and not every landlord is turning a profit and/or owns multiple properties.-- I rent out my home, but have always only charged my tenants the same amount as the mortgage. I can't offer any other relief because the mortgage still has to be paid.
Yukitsu Times "Just pay the rent or move out," That is what our landlords are telling us. O brother. Boy I could use ( on an empty stomach) a 4-LOCO. And I need to stay awake from that. What if the four people to be evicted were 1) baby Hitler, 2) baby Stalin, 3) Donald Trump jr. and that Maxwell woman? Those four could use time on the street. Especially Donald Trump jr. B- pay them for 40 hrs a week? You expect them to pay YOUR utilities plus YOUR insurance plus the mortgage on the building YOU'RE living in off that? Not to mention repairing the holes you punch in the walls and Windows you break and copper pipes you cut out for scrap metal? What about paying his own bills and mortgage? Your right- it's his risk and he has the legal right to act on that risk by getting rid of deadbeats and trouble makers.
Meanwhile in Germany: The government introduced new measures to protect tenants unable to pay their rent as a result of the coronavirus crisis. Renters will not be evicted from April 1st to September 30th for failure to pay rents. And a social system that catches you if you still lose your job. America needs to finally act and realize that some social systems just work better. (not perfect, but better) The funds are there, but the red scare is still so ingrained.
@@dakotablust1814 crazy how much positive change happened, right? Too bad we can't say the same about the US, sometimes it looks like they're 80 years in the past.
"Renters will not be evicted from April 1st to September 30th " And then add that evicting an uncooperative tenant isn't that easy in Germany and barely possible in the winter, this could also just be until April 2021.
The "its business" argument is so obnoxious. I hope that guy needs urgent medical assistance on the street someday, and people just keep walking on past and say "sorry buddy, its walking". You can't just compartmentalise life to suit your selfish behaviour. Its not business, its society!
They should just say "Sorry, as a free and rational agent trying to maximize my expected utility, I would rather not spend my time and money taking you to the hospital." Or you could impersonate US healthcare: "That'll be 10,000 dollars. If the market is willing to pay that price, that's what the price should be."
For real! I would like to be able to afford to rent out a place one day, but by "afford" I mean that should a situation like this happen again, I can afford to own the place I live and also the rental. I find it crazy that people become landlords and are pretty much banking on someone else paying for it to be able to afford it. Obviously tenants need to be responsible and be able to pay under normal circumstances, and I would always be open to negotiating, but we are not in normal circumstances.
And why wouldn't landlords count as a "small business" that qualifies for 1 of those govt loans? I get that it's a loan, but hopefully u can work with people in the bad spots, they get back to work, pay 25-50 bucks extra each month after, then he turns and pays the govt 25-50 each month per person that he helped keep a roof. I know it's not perfect. But u hear of all these weird businesses that got sooo much in the small business loans. But I'm sure the govt wouldn't put up with small payments each month too. They'll just keep tax returns. Its gonna be a whole mess of fallout.
I was evicted this last Monday due to the fact we missed court, even though we went to the actual court house, instead of the web. Though our papers were stamped, they wouldn't give us another court date. Our landlord still took a partial payment, and we had been living in the home without a working stove nor refrigerator. I am now homeless. My fiance and I are both employed, however due to Corona it caused our hours to be cut. So tomorrow I head to the shelter, hoping to qualify to not stay in population, but rather a dorm. I survived a fire back in November, burning 3% of my body (my whole left foot) and after 2 skin grafts, a bum knee on the same left side, along with no transportation, limping around from place to place with our bags, I'm scared shitless! Here in Ogden Utah, the hotel we've used all our funds on, is FULL of evictees.
I think the worst part of this has been realizing that if an actual zombie plague ever happens, our response to it will be infinitely more horrifying than the zombies themselves could ever hope to be.
No doubt! Zombies are so much better than people. They work together selflessly and although they're greedy eaters it's not cutthroat competitive because what's going to happen if you don't eat? Are you going to die? No. If anything it's a sort of enlightenment.
the zombie apocalypse is just an analogy for people like you who watch way too much TV and become political tools. Free your programmed brains, read some history books and think for yourselves
He can probably only do that for a month or two before he's gonna run out of money. I can guarantee the city and the state aren't pausing his tax payments and fees required for that same period of time.
@@ronburgundy244 Even if that's the case, this still makes him a life saver to pretty much all of his tenants. Props to the guy for helping however he can.
In addition to stopping evictions, there must NOT be credit damage to renters and homeowners who have lost their income. Salt in the wound. This situation is horrible. Amassing (rent/mortgage) debt with no foreseeable way to pay is morbidly depressing.
The US is one giant debt-domino row waiting to drop. About 80% of the US national debt is owed to US corporations and persons and the same goes for all kinds of other debts in the US. Once any group starts defaulting on the debt(-payments) then the next domino drops and needs to default too.
Sadly the small people will lose. The big corporations will then buy those homes at a deep discount when foreclosed. Once those big corporations own everything rent will rise. So its a lose lose situation
I know and it fuckin sucks bc his attitude is discouraged, while being ruthless and unforgiving is encouraged. Bc the guy that had empathy now has to eat the cost of the rent for that month. when the government should be helping. I'm sure that landlord could afford it, but many couldn't. The landlords aren't always the bad guy (though the other one in this video seems terrible), in this situation it's the government that's to blame.
A hundred years later my brother and I found a new talk show host. A youtuber named Pewdiepie. And although he has a lot to learn, I believe that Pewdiepie will save the world.

"Throwing a single mother and her three children out on the street isn’t fun, but it’s business” That, in one sentence, is how screwed this country is. Greed and more Greed.
That guy seems like an ass and a bad businessman to me, but when he says "its business" what he means is "we have a mortgage, taxes, insurance, employees, and vendors to pay, if we don't collect rent we will have to foreclose". Its a lot more complicated than you think.
Ryan Barthel but see here’s why it’s different for tenants, I didn’t chose to require shelter. It’s just something that I inherently require in order to live. Landlords made a conscious decision to own an extra home. Owning and renting out an extra home for profit is not required for you to live whereas having shelter is required for tenants to live. I didn’t choose to need shelter but you chose to profit off of those who inherently need shelter. Landlords and the banks are parasitic leeches who’s ‘work’ contributes nothing at all and only serves to siphon money from people. I will never feel bad for people who made an investment and didn’t get the return on investment that they were looking for. that goes for landlords and the landlords landlord, the bank.
@@GaryVolts We own several properties in OK, and we worked with our tenants. Even spreading out the missed rent over a few years. Being a greedy ass in the middle of this only makes your tenants look at you as an a**hole.. and word spreads fast. But hey, if you're willing to kick out a good tenant because of missed rent. Fine. But how much does it cost to find a new tenant? Remember, you have to clean the place thoroughly and make sure it's COVID free before you can even allow anyone in the dwelling. Not to mention is the new tenant reliable? Good history? Only time will tell. Us, we'd rather keep our tenants since most, if not all, of them have been solid and reliable.
@@Imactuallynighthawk Here's where you're wrong, you don't NEED to live in a house for shelter, you CHOSE to. You can live on the street for free, yet you CHOSE to rent from a landlord, in a house build by someone who got paid to build it, and bought by someone who decided to make a living with it. A landlord chooses to make a profit with a house like you choose to work for a company, to pay your expenses and buy things you want. A bank keeps your money safe and lends you money to purchase things you otherwise couldn't afford. You can CHOOSE not to use a bank, you can operate solely in cash and hoard it, buying things out-rite. Trying to spin things like landlords and banks aren't offering you services that you, with many options, of your own will choose to take, is a simpleton point of view. Try using your head a little.
I very much appreciate how John points out the landlords are waiting in the wings to pounce the moment protections are lifted. Lenders for homeowners are doing the same. I've been extremely blessed to not have to need any forbearance (hold on my house pymt) during this time, but being in a job that helps homeowners navigate loan recovery options, I work closely with banks. Lenders are doing one step up: taking advantage of people's hard times to actually make even MORE money. (And ironically, Wells Fargo is one of only banks I'm seeing doing the right thing for the people I work with!) I literally have shed tears because it makes me so sad that somewhere along the line, "business" has lost all interest in caring for those who even make their existence possible.
"It's never fun throwing a single mother and her three kids out on the streets. It's not fun, but it's business." I think I can name, like, 58-ish movie villains who said that exact same thing
And Movies are Escapism because unlike in real life, those villains actually get punished for their behavior. In the real world that attitude is rewarded.
It is screwed up...but don't assume because he is mouthy he is actually good at business. Most likely if people don't pay, he loses those units and no one gets to live there anyway. I had a crappy landlord, when he threw in the towel everyone was kicked out within 60 days by the new masters...it should have been 90 days but they had the building condemned...We have to do something other than compete against one another, because that is a losing game.
@@vodkasour8385 Adopt a mindset of social and political solidarity. It's something you can do *now* , no question-marked steps before that. Every single person who does it makes the world a better place, bit by bit. What does it mean? It means to stop invalidating other people's pain, even if you don't understand it. The ability to take yourself back at times to the benefit of others. To be affirmative of the idea to give *and* to receive, that you don't have to take care of yourself, but that it's okay if you take care of others, and they take care of you, instead of everyone fending for themselves. Now, that's a whole load of abstract talk. Besides everyday stuff where elements of that can be practiced, politically speaking, it translates to affirming universal education, universal healthcare and universal welfare (I can see how that one especially can be challenging to wrap their heads around for many) and more egalitarian and democratic economic structures (e.g. worker cooperatives). It also means abandoning arbitrary divisions, such as racial ones. A good test as to how successful you are at this is to check your stance on immigration: Are you willing to help people in need, or are you prone to use convenient excuses such as "not born here" to weasel out? It also translates to foreign policy: How much do you care if your vote translates to people half across the world getting bombed, in comparison to how much you'd care if it translated to people inside your country getting bombed?
It is pretty bad even before this. Back in 2017 there was a count of about 550K people on the streets without a home. That's about the same number of people living in the entire state of Wyoming.
@Luís Filipe Andrade cheaper to the government, but more expensive for the wealthy class, due to the implication that we could actually provide for everyone

Exactly
> You can't even sleep in your car (if you still have one)-it's against the law.
The laws are so good! We should all abide by them!
Seems pretty accurate.
And all of that vacated property will be destroyed and re-developed, something that was being prevented by those low-income renters.

That’s American capitalism for you. In other developed nations who are also capitalists, this wouldn’t happened. They have laws to protect this from happening and their citizens have a different way of thinking.
I meaaaannnnn you said it 👀 but I’m 100% agreeing with you
@tomasgomez9925 Correct. People say Capitalism is the problem. No, extreme unregulated Capitalism is the problem
I gotta learn German...
I am trapped in the US. I would not care if it was communism.
This is about white supremacy.

@@truthseekeralways7050 "truth seeker" ....lol.
Michael Sequerth
I can see where you’re coming from Michael.
The idea that you have to work to be giving value to "society" is actually a joke when you realize that the hardest working people make less money than if they just sat at home being a full time "product" of data mining
Sure, it's a bubble, but the bubble bursting will likely be more a result of over valuing of the data, the data of a homeless person with no spending money is still worth something, but if the economy crashes, so does this bubble and all the companies relying on that mechanism will crash too.
It’s not just hard to get housing with an eviction on their record, it’s also hard to get a job, a loan. It affects your whole life and it’s a downward spiral that’s very difficult to get out of.
That's right, baby. All direct consequences of the drumpf's failure to respect and respond to covid 19. ALL HAIL HIS DOWNFALL!!!!!!

@@bruhhhhh718 yes because libertarians are well-known fans of government assistance programs and using the power of government to do something like cancel rents.
This is just one example of the overall larger issue - OUR GOVERNMENT DOESN'T WORK FOR REGULAR PEOPLE

What’s their answer? That it’s not that easy? I know, right.
78% of workers live paycheck to paycheck. They can't save up for a raining day.
Winter S. Still no plans by Dems or Republicans to give individuals stimulus checks

Whether we assign tenants or landlords an abstract "responsibility to save" won't have the slightest effect on that.

I thought the US already had a homelessness crisis... I really don't want to see the next level of it
SERIOUSLY! The homeless crisis in America is already bad enough, and now it gets worse. Just what we need.
It is pretty bad even before this. Back in 2017 there was a count of about 550K people on the streets without a home. That's about the same number of people living in the entire state of Wyoming.
@@JTMaster and those are the people they could count
@Luís Filipe Andrade cheaper to the government, but more expensive for the wealthy class, due to the implication that we could actually provide for everyone
This is scary
Three months later: *millions of homeless people dead in the streets*
Rich people: why are there so many dead homeless people on our streets?!
And then suddenly there are no more people buying their products. "Why isn't anyone buying my product? How am I going to afford ten mansions, now?!"
"This isn't a rainy day, it's the great flood. And one reason no one has an umbrella is because it's not safe to open the f*cking umbrella factory yet!"
Damn, that's one seriously good analogy for 2020.
Also trump dismantled the nations stockpile of emergency umbrellas and cut umbrella funding from the government while cutting his own taxes.

Too bad that the economy provides the people with things like food. It doesn't matter if you have a house or not if you've got no food to eat. Only children see the world in black and white and everything as standalone and unrelated.
