I can never get over the fact yuki and kyo could have been friends if things had been just a little different😭😭
According to the author, Yuki seeing Tohru as a mother figure was the first thing she knew about the story. So it was always intentional, but also was told this way I guess to subvert expectations. Looking back, I can see hints to it at the very beginning but they're very subtle and easy to miss:)

Yes! S1 ep 12 I think (where Akito comes to the school) and they are playing badminton and what Yuki says is literally like oh my goodness so obvious he already views Tohru as a mother figure xD

From what I know the mangaka had Yuki and Tohru's relationship in mind from the beginning. That was the starting point of the manga. Yes the framing was done at several points to make it seem like a love triangle but i think yuki's actions were very intentional.

This made Yuki my fav character in the show, it's also sweet knowing this relation of Yuki and Tohru was one of the first things the author thought of before writing the story. I think they also cut a line from his monologue in the anime that he doesn't want a romantic relation with someone who puts him on pedestal, he wants someone who needs him as much as he needs them. In Tohru's case he always felt he was on receiving end, that's why Machi was perfect for him

Yuki is a fascinating character. All his life, he has been put as this fantastic figure, the golden child of the zodiac, the closest to god itself, the prince of the school who can do no wrong... To the point that yeah, the other zodiac didn't really cared about him or hated him for his place in the family. Most of them deal with family issues : Kagura and her parents fighting, Isuzu and Kyo for the abuse, Momiji erased from his mother mind, Hatsuharu being seen as stupid as the ox, Ritsu feeling ashamed to even be... On the other hand, you have the adults, more like teenage boys at that time, who can understand thing better or gain their own form of freedom, like Shigure or Ayame, while Hatori and Kureno are more obedient. Even in school, he was seen as perfect, the kind of guy who wouldn't associate himself to normal people, who is better at everything, the obvious future student president... It has been his burden for the longest time, not finding anyone who could see for what he is inside, not seeing what he was going through, not willing to help him get out of here. Ayame rejected him, Shigure only took him over only because Haru beg for it, Hatori feeling too guilty to act... Or, to be fait, one person understood Yuki very well, and all the zodiacs for that matter : Akito. He's a great manipulator because he sees people flaws and how to use it against them. In a sense, Akito is right with everything because most of them have only known the Soma family, where sure, the cat is the demon one isolated and confinded, but if the god figure wasn't there to give them a purpose, they would be no different. At least, until Tohru into the picture. That gril has suffered from bullying because she was too naive, knows what grief is, all too well, wants to help other because she can't find her own purpose in life. She knows what it feels like to be different, to feel accepted, to long for people who can give you that security. And so, she can understand all this hurt they keep inside, she can accepted them as human being, she can console them because sadness isn't a mistake... And so, they all feel attracted to her, in different ways. Isuzu and Yuki found a mother at her side, probably more of a big sister for Kisa can has a loving mother, a romantic partner for Kyo, a friend for the other, sometimes a rival for Kagura and Hiro, or a little sister/daughter to protect, for Hatori... If anything, Shigure is the only who feels like he would use her, no matter the cost. And now that Yuki is slowly healing, he can start making new connection, build his self-esteem and find new people who will accept him. And yet, the only one, outside of Tohru and Akito, who seem to understand him deeply, is Machi, who doesn't see him as this dream prince but someone who will be afraid to be left alone in the dark. While Kyo is giving up, accepting his fate and closing off to the world, Yuki is finally moving on to a brighter future.
As for your question, the whole story was inspired by its end, especially regarding Tohru and Yuki relationship. So yep, it was done on purpose, and it shows in a lot of details. Kyo using her own metaphore to cheer her up, while Yuki only took its lesson. Tohru calling Kyo by his first name while sticking to the Soma-kun for a long time, while Yuki still can't bring himself to call her Tohru and not Honda-san. Yuki alwayw acting like the prince he's supposed to be, not knowing other way to convay his affection to her. This series is great for a rewatch/reread.

Interesting discussion! When I first saw the earlier series and read the manga, it was one of the first I had read so I didn't have the standard tropes of the medium etched in my thinking already, so I never had any strong expectations based on foreshadowing or "what always happens" as it seems like Carson did. But it's been interesting to see how this hits for someone who is very savvy to the stereotypes and tropes. It's a different experience, for sure. I've always felt that the super tropey first few episodes were setting up expectations precisely so that they could be subverted later. The love triangle especially. And the sense that this was going to be a cute and happy romance-themed show.
I feel like the hints toward memory erasure were for the sake of Hatori's story as much or more than Yuki or Tohru's. It showed Tohru's unconditional acceptance of Yuki, which meant so much to him after his prior disaster at trying to have friends, but it also set up Hatori as the stern and scary elder, with his ominous introduction to Tohru, so that his story of heartbreak would hit that much harder when revealed. Since Yuki had so little relationship with the other Zodiac members, it makes sense that he basically just knew Hatori as the family doctor who erased his first friends and panicked at the thought of it happening again. He may not even know the story of Kana. But since the story reveals are so gradual, there are a lot of details that only become noticeable on rewatches and re-reads and can't be anticipated the first time through.

yuki isn't giving up his love to tohru. there's no competition between yuki and kyo. yuki just forced himself to think that it is romantic but then realized later than it never was.
the author originally wrote fruits basket and was inspired by the dynamic of yuki and tohru, yuki seeing tohru as a mother figure.
so the author intentionally wrote the flirting and moves of yuki a forced ones coz it was planned since the beginning of the show.

there's no love triangle. the very first thing the author thought about before writing fruits basket was yuki and tohru's dynamic and yuki seeing tohru as a mother figure. the love triangle here was momiji, kyo and tohru. that's why yuki's moves and flirting seems forced to tohru coz it was intentional.

It was Kyoru since the beginning. The first anime with 24 episodes was so Yuki-Tohru pairing that I remember reading the author was a little dissapointed so...
This arc shows why FB is a must watch anime
This point is when it was made clear that Yuki is the second main character of FB, no second male lead, but a protagonist in himself. (I think the author acknowlowed as well that FB has 2 protagonists)
We have Tohru with the normal (but lovable) romance where "love saves it all" (and Kyo being the damsell in distress)
But Yuki... We saw him grow. We saw him as his worst and take all kindness he recieved and became a better person. He could have been like Akito, angry with life, but he chose kindness. And now he will build his life, with friends and love outside the Somas.
    (Spoiler 1
So sad that they cut so many scenes of him, Ayame, Kakeru, Komaki and Machi. I know that now the story will focus on Kyoru, but those chapters that show how he keeps going on are gold.
    Spoiler 2
I cried when Mutsuki, in the 20-ish years later spin off "FB another", said to him that he was glad his house is a warm one. Even Yuki cried when his son told him that, showing him that he achieved his dream)

so true. i can't help but feel frustrated whenever they say "yuki isn't genuine about his feelings to tohru, he never did enough effort to win her" like there's no competition lol. it's planned since the beginning of the show.

I ship them platonically *and* romantically. I feel like it could've happened, it could have gone either way and that they had chemistry.
But whenever I say that I get immediately shut down.
I like the platonic roles he plays in the story, but I also feel like Yuki/Tohru had romantic potential, in addition.

Their friendship was pretty good thou, so I can see where you are coming from.
I liked the way the story subverted the common tropes.
But I also feel like it could have gone either way, and that the character who played this role could have easily been another.
I can see why it was Yuki thou, Yuki's character set up was great.
