    So, I've seen the point made somewhere that the Schnee family (minus Jacques, obviously) depicts the four responses to trauma (Wiess is Fight, Winter is Flight, Willow is Freeze, and Whitley is Fawn), and I wanted to take a moment to comment on Whitley, specifically, since now I can say all of this without spoilers.
    Weiss stated that her home life fell apart on her eighth birthday, when Jacques admitted to Willow that he had never loved her. It's not clear how far apart the Schnee children are in age, but Whitley seems to be at least a couple of years younger than Weiss, meaning that he was probably 5-6 when things devolved, and possibly even younger. Worse, he was the only member of the family with no support against their father. Winter seems to have ducked out a quickly as possible, and she would have been the most mature anyway as the oldest. Weiss was enamored with her big sister, and probably used thoughts of following in Winter's footsteps to sustain herself, while Willow was falling apart and in no shape to help anyone.
    All that together means that from a young age, Whitley was trapped. He had no support, no help, no friends, while his father applied intense pressure on him to be perfect. So Whitley did what he was told. He became the perfect heir, the son his father wanted. And as long as he did, he had some semblance of affection. It was the affection given to a useful tool, but it was more than he was getting from anywhere else, so he likely latched on to it. Being the perfect son WAS his identity.
    A lot of people, understandably, didn't like Whitley due to his actions in volume 4, but look at it from his perspective. After so long being the perfect son, being what his father wanted, being who he needed to be to get rewarded, his runaway sister comes home and looks to supplant him, despite clearly not being what his father wanted. And if she takes his place, he will have NOTHING, not even an identity. Is it really any wonder that he tricked Weiss into exposing herself as an unsuitable heir?
    I don't think Whitley actually enjoys being the dutiful son, but it's a role he has adopted for his own mental health, and I think that his reaction to Jacques' arrest shows this pretty clearly. Note that for all Jacques' certainty that Whitley will get him out of this, Whitley is not shown to be outraged by his father's fate, or calmly assuming control of the company and taking action to save Jacques, but rather he's listless, nervous, uncertain who he is or what to do without the father who has defined him for so long.

      Tenth birthday, not eighth. But yeah, a lot of people don't have enough sympathy for Whitley. Weiss was pretty awful when the series started, and grew to become a better person thanks to being outside of her father's influence. Whitley hasn't had that chance yet.

    • @ivanteoh930

      Yeah despite all that Weiss had no problem pointing her weapon at him

    • @Omegafire17
      @Omegafire17 5 дней назад

      @@ivanteoh930 That was simply her doing what she has to, to get him to move quickly since talking wasn't going to work and thus waste time that they don't have. Doesn't mean she doesn't still hold affection for him, as they're not always mutually exclusive - you can be angry with a parent/sibling over stuff while still loving them, after all
      We as human beings don't, and shouldn't, only feel one side of emotion toward people by default. That kind of outlook is flawed in-of-itself imho

    What’s so good is that the Council Members bring up excellent points. James shouldn’t have two seats in the council, no one should. He has been running all over their procedures. There should have been more open communication, if not the whole truth, then at least something to help the rest of the council understand the severity. “What people intend and what they do aren’t always the same.” That really sums up James here in this volume.
    Oh, and look! There’s that giant hole in the wall that Ironwood could have let them fix before he took all the materials for Amity. But hey, who cares about Mantle, right? It’s just a few city blocks. And again, he didn’t have the code updated in Mantle, even knowing someone had hacked his drones back at Beacon, which gave Watts an in to some of their systems!
    Like, I know that Amity would be an ultimate good but holy shit dude fix your own place first.

    I mean he's already been told that at some point he won't even notice the difference. Ozpin going "silent" was probably just the next step on the merge. We don't really have anything to compare if this time is different or not, maybe this is just how it always goes. The difference this time is that Oscar has a different environment, so the secretive tendencies of Ozpin are being countered.

    It's not a takeover, it's a merging of Oz and Oscar's souls.
    Weiss is best girl. The knight she summoned is from her first trailer, which canonically, her father made her fight before allowing her to go to Beacon.

  • @wootcat
    @wootcat 6 дней назад +3

    I know our frame of reference is Ozpin, but realize that Ozpin is not the original. Ozma was. It's also pretty clear that Ozma's personality is different from Ozpin's. Don't look at it as Ozpin taking over, because, I would suspect that Ozpin was similar to who he was before merging with the previous host. Yes, Oscar won't be the same person he was, but he also won't be entirely gone.

    The "issue" with the blending is that we ARE our memories. I think it is this blending idea, but that's still a concern. Simply by having access to those memories, you are now the person with those memories. Oscar will become whoever the person is that has both his own memories and Ozpin's memories. It's a scary proposition, but I think that's why this process of eternal life is preferable to Salem's, in the long run. It ensures that a new, young person always has a chance to make decisions with the experience of the eternal being, rather than the eternal being becoming jaded alongside their old age.

    am I the only one who freaked out over the new Grimm in this volume? Granted, it might be due to my lifelong obsession with Dinosaurs, but my brain was not prepared for the concept of 'Sabretooth Grimm?!' in episode 1, then in this episode it was 'MAMMOTH GRIMM!!?' on repeat for a while after, though to my self-shame, I had to look up the flying creature I assumed was some kind of Dragon to realise it was a fusion of Therapod/carnivorous Dinosaur (specifically a kind of Dromaeosaur/raptor) with Pterosaur wings, so a little embarrassed about that, and I would assume the centipedes were based on the giant millipede from the Carboniferous Period, Arthropleura
    that little Sherlock quip could be considered ironic since, by my understanding, Arthur Watts was based on Holmes's partner, Dr John Watson, and his first name perhaps a nod to the author of the Sherlock Holmes books, Arthur Conan Doyle, who also wrote The Lost World (again, Dinosaurs)
    could it be considered a shade hypocritical of Ironwood to criticise Jacques of not considering what Watts would do with his clearance to Atlas's network, since, for all his fixation on keeping Atlas safe, he never bothered updating the code in Mantle, which gave Watts the opening to cause problems and avoid detection in the first place, as he did with the code in the city of Atlas? Just seems like a bit of an oversight to me

    • @nathanielreik6617
      @nathanielreik6617 6 дней назад +2

      Not disagreeing with what you've said but pointing out that they've seemingly consistently been focused on Atlas more than Mantle. Atlas has nice weather (it seems), has sunlight, is a lot safer from grimm, has more up to date technology; while Mantle doesn't really get the sun due to Atlas hovering over them, is reliant of heaters so they don't freeze, and has a wall that even disregarding the hole seems considerably weaker than needed. And let's not forget where the resources for Amity have been taken from. Not updating the system is just one thing in a list of ways where they have consistently prioritized Atlas and not worried much about Mantle.

    I'm not a big fan of Jacques comeuppance here. Deserved, of course, but given he spent an unknown amount of time positioning himself to take over the SDC, and then a decade or more at least maintaining it's position against competition, I was expecting a bit more here. Some prepared plausible denyability, at least an attempt to create cut-outs between Watts and himself, some indication that he wasn't so dumb as to hand over very high level, private access keys to a disgraced genius *claiming* to only want to attack Ironwood. That should have 'too good to be true' written all over it, and a half-decent manipulator would see that.
    But it is satisfying to see Weiss take him down, won't deny that.

    • @KitsyX
      @KitsyX 6 дней назад +4

      I mean, if he was friendly with Watts before, he might not expect any particularly bad results… He also doesn’t know Watts has teamed up with Salem, plus the lengths he was willing to go to for revenge… And as smart as Jacques is, he’s also greedy and arrogant… He didn’t have any clue that Willow had planted those hidden cameras either… He didn’t think he needed deniability because he didn’t think anyone else would know anything…
