    Beethoven wasn't actually conducting the piece. A conductor was standing behind him keeping time for the orchestra. When he was turned around by the Soprano, he ended up weeping.

    BTW being stone deaf he was USELESS as a conductor. the orchestra did what we often do when the conductor is incompetent ( which happens more often than you might think
    we follow the LEADER ( ie the first violinist
    or, as some here pointed out and i had forgotten, they got someone else to conduct while L van B gesticulated futilely to the air

    he could hear it where it mattered for any capable composer
    IN HIS MIND.
    so you make a fuss over an issue that is no issue
    BTW it is actually harder to compose when YOU ARE BLIND for you have to dictate EACH note to an amanuensis while holding the LOT in memory

    Completely deaf. Maybe. He could certainly feel the vibrations. As we continue to feel almost 200 years after he composed it. Ode to joy rocks!

    Beethoven was never completely deaf. He could distinguish certain low tones and loud, piercing sounds.
