This is Paul and Connecticut. I wrote some replies to some of these on here. Toward the song small town boy and. Small town boy and I read yours at top. I forgot the name of the singer, but you Wrote in your comment RIP who passed away today your reply was 1 year though did the singer of bronsky beat die, I didn't hear about that house sad he was probably younger than me when the song came out. I grew up in the 80s. I grew up. Hearing the song I was in my 20s. I even have the vinyl album at home. I was wondered if the singer who's so. Truthful about his lyrics went through this in his life. I think hes from England I wonder if he died of AIDS, I think I heard something. About the singer year ago. hes so young wonder what happened to him , but this beautiful song will live forever, God bless him.
I can remember being a young guy and hearing this song being so scared of it's true meaning. I couldn't deal with who I was but this song some how helped me understand my struggle in facing my truth.
why in all the love of the universe and existence could being straight someone mean that you are or are not as entitled as another individual to feel moved from by a song? what ?
Sadness of leaving something that you've always known behind, the fear and excitement of going into the big bad world to find something else that you hope will be better
Superb song! Great vocals and melody. Great refrain, i.e. run away, turn away, run away...Great synth parts. Sad, haunting, addictive as it tears at your heart. You don't need to be gay to feel what JS is feeling.an 80s masterpiece!
The best i have to confess, wow the lyrics, what a trip i never knew what the song was about , the song would be an example to the young bullied today!
I have always loved this song - haunting for sure. Tonight I read the lyrics for the first time. No wonder. It's a masterpiece - a prayer - for the pain and courage it takes to sometimes go forward.
This was my song! And still is i relate to it over and over agai . such beautiful lyricist. My era of the 80s when my froends were sying from AIDS. What a memory a somewhat death defying experience. Who knew????
I loved this song for a long time. I remember finding the video a couple of weeks ago. English is not my first lenguage , but I could perfectly picture a train in my mind when I heard this song for the first time.
I can't really explain the feelings this song brings me, the only thing i know for sure is that this song is going to be forever inside my head and my soul.
this was so me in the 80's( Hey i was a teenager) just don't remember the song then. It is a 80's song. still amazeing today. ok i will be 42 n sept. still a great song
1984 (when this song came out) WASNT A VERY HAPPY YEAR FOR ME ( for a number of reasons one being having to move house where id spent 3 happy years at) it was in the summer of that year when i first head it - living in my new place, echoing my feelings of unhappiness that it wasnt as good as my last place) even though 3o odd years have passed, in this the 21st century it still has that lovely haunting melody.
I love this song way too much, but this version wow, it's soooo good!! the first part is priceless! I'm sure gonna keep listening to this in the future, thank you!
I understand this song completely I'm stuck in a small town don't know if any of you would relate but damn ironically just discovered/heard this song for the first time at a store and fuck EVERY word just made sense damn these small town lives and the society's in them...
This song is life, life for many people!!!! really painfull but beautifull !!!! my brothers favourite tune - RIP Michel!!!! I'm too young(15) to be listening to this but I love it tho
When the fabulous British DJ, JD Arnold spun the original (probably one of the fantastic remixes he is well known for) @ Rich's nightclub in Houston, TX everyone GOT it - the meaning of the lyrics. Searing, moving, touching, powerful lyrics. MOST every gay man KNOWS these feelings.Wanting to leave his home town for a better, more open, accepting place to start a new chapter in his life. This is one of my TopTen songs of ALL time.. A true original !!!!
Yes. Being gay he was subject to abuse etc. It's semi-autobiographical. The video actually shows Jimmy Somerville being attacked by 'Gay Bashers' & then being brought home by the police & his parents realise he is gay. He then gets on a train & leaves the provincial backwoods town & the small mindedness that often infects such towns & its inhabitants. Personally I always thought it had a broader meaning. Anyone who is different is often targeted by morons. You don't have to be gay!
I sit in a dark room and scream at a deaf world. Running away and turning away is all I've ever done, and I can't bear it any longer. This place we inhabit, this world it's a prison made to fool you into believing it's real. It infects you and gnaws at you until it becomes you. This darkness that lives in us all must be cast out, yet we're never taught how to treat it let alone diagnose it. I don't have any of the answers, only the questions, but I'm hoping, praying that one day I just might find that missing piece. The part of life that eludes me, and yet tempts me with it's existence. I will find a way to free us all even if it takes a thousand lifetimes. I can no longer bear witness to this world and not try to save it, regardless of how terrified or foolish I may be, and I know I'm not alone.
Sounds like you could be on the path to a spiritual enlightenment, you can see how evil the world has become because of the way the people are running it and we the vast majority are forced into this matrix lifestyle that is made up of lies and is not real. Keep going my friend… the world needs the ones who can see through it all and that’s how eventually the matrix will crumble
I'm not gay but I am from a small town and moved to a big city I've always knew I was bigger then my home town I'm like an alien when I go back and it feels great.
You just feel the pain in his voice, it's more than beautiful!!
well said
At 1'28, in the word "and" you can feel his pain, suffer. Very delicate song.
Right 😢🖤

It honestly made me tear up soo bad 🤟
R.I.P. to the one who passed today. You made the 80’s even better. What days.. what days indeed.
