I was 8 when this song came out. Robin and Barry before the Disco period would alternate singing lead on songs. But of all the singers I have ever heard from the 60's to now.....there has never been another singer whose voice could compare to Robin's.....his voice wins hands down for uniqueness, vocal range, harmony, sound quality and emotional effect on all of their songs....it just pulls you in and reaches all the way down deep into your soul. In an interview both Barry and Maurice said Robin's voice was one of a kind and there will never be another one like it. His voice is truly a blessing and I'm thankful for it. I liked all of their voices and they were all unique voices in their own way. Thanks for the reaction Chad.😊
Just love love love Robin’s voice in this. He was incredible. How on earth was he only 17? This is one of my favourites despite the the timing changes. It really showcases Robin’s capabilities.
I hope you're wrong. We had the pleasure of his music and sound in our lives. I truly hope that the next generation will be given the same pleasure. Robin was remarkable, and he has touched so many souls. It would be sad if future generations wouldn't be able to experience the same. But, yes, Robin was one of a kind and is really missed.
i think its not really about liking or loving this song....I think your analysis of the development of their songwriting , arranging, and musical skills it the most important part of the songs from this album. For me I enjoy listening to all their music from all decades. All the songs have something to offer my ears, my brain, and my heart. Thank you for doing this song.
You are on the money with your views. Robin def could have been a classical singer with his style and vibrato. His voice fits their earlier style. It is so unique that it didn't fit the Disco style as well. He did have some surprises and solos in some of the up-tempo songs in the late 70s and early 80s. But I truly enjoy listening to his voice in the earlier years of their career.
I'm completely with you on this one. It is a song of the 60's and everyone was trying to find themselves. But Robins voice is just pure gold. I laughed just a little when you said Mo, thinking back to one of your first reactions when you weren't sure how to say his name. Keep up the good work, Chad.
And this is a prime example of the pressure Robin received from outside pressures to go solo. They were only teenagers at the time. As Robin jokingly said on a 2002 Larry King Live, he arrived at their studio one day and his brothers weren't there.
One thing you did nit comment on were the lyrics! Uncredible! Dont think I've ever heard such a song w lyrics like these. So unique! So down to earth too.
CHAD, I knew you would enjoy Robin's vocals in this song! You should listen to "WINE AND WOMEN" and then "MONDAY'S RAIN", (in that order) to experience more of Robin's range of surprises!! I do agree that they experimented a lot with music. That's what kept them going for so many years. At the end of Robin's lifetime he and his son created the "Titanic Requiem". Would you have imagined that by what you just witnessed in this video?? Amazing! "Bloody Geniuses"... there's another B.G. !!😅💖💖💖
This was their first album after leaving Australia, the first on the big world stage I guess it would be said. (Oh, and yes, I goofed and missed Wind of change on the list, I actually keep a list of bee gees songs you've done. Try not to repeat requests) They are so young here. But the brothers never stopped experimenting, that's why they lasted, willing to change. That and they were plain good 👍
You heard the "flower power" and "psychedelic" influences of the song, and you were spot-on in picking up the Beatles influence. But you know what I hear so much in Robin near the end, was the R&B in his young voice. I like the artistry of the song, but I can see where some of the sections felt a little disconnected. I think sometimes we forget they were teenagers, because they were so unbelievably accomplished. Yes, they were experimenting in their writing and doing crazy amounts of it. I don't remember this specific song very well, but by the next year they were on the world stage. I remember being in elementary school and seeing them on Ed Sullivan doing "Words" in 1968. That did it for me. Much love for them ever since.
Thank you so much Chad for choosing to react to this gem from the LP "Bee Gees 1st". I rediscover with bliss the awesome last part of it, a real treat. And the ton of Robin's voice ... wow!!! Memories of 1967 come back to me, when I used to listen to this track (B side of "To love somebody") on the juke box of the nearby bar. One evening a beautiful English correspondent of a highschoolfriend was there and while we were listening to the song, I said I love the Bee Gees, she answered " Oh yes , me too".
Hi Chad - One of your hungry "birds" is back! Rob and Mo only 17 here and Barry 20. Still with Vince and Colin. This was an evolutionary/developmental stage of their music figuring out where to go and finding their own identity. The lyrics are rather sad about being old, unappreciated and put out to pasture yet sung by someone so young. "I've been working so very hard at being young but now I'm out of time" (or "but now I'm tired"). Can't make it out for sure. They idolized the Beatles (and the Beach Boys) Many of their early songs sounded similar to them and in fact Stigwood sent their demos out unnamed giving the first and last letters in the band's name (B and S) so some DJ's thought it was The Beatles. A smart marketing ploy. Stigwood learned Epstein's tricks working for him (The Beatles manager). Epstein couldn't be bothered with the Bee Gees so pawned them off on him. Stigwood was determined to make them HIS Beatles. The audience looks enthralled....NOT! Hey, everyone likes different songs. I thought Robin's voice at that age was that of an 80 year old black soul singer! When he is staring up into space you know he's into the song. Love the jacket.
First time hearing this. Out of the gate, Robin made me shiver ! Beatles were a definite influence in their early works, I'm not sure about the Beach Boys. You are right, the shifting made it hard to appreciate. Not a favorite for me. Always love the brothers, however. Thank you so much for Bee Gees weekends, so special for the Moms who love them this particular time around. Chad, you're the best reactor out there in my opinion. Take care and looking forward to the rest of your picks !
For me this is an enjoyable song, not my favorite but enjoyable not the less. It is so great to see that people really start to "discover" Robin. Most "new" Bee Gees listers will favour Barry as vocalist, but then when the dive deeper into their catalog they start to hear Robin's voice and talent. Along the Bee Gees fans you'll find a lange amount of them having Robin as their favorite vocalist. I also got into their music loving Barry's falsetto, but as time progressed Robin became my favorite vocalist. But, I feel the Bee Gees are at their best together. It's great to have all of them together in a song, altering leads, harmonies and so on. And they always match the right vocalist to the right song. Some are really Barry songs, some suit Maurice very well and others are made for Robin's vocals. But for me the real magic is the three of them together. But had I to chose, it would be Robin. Somehow he can really reach you with his vocals. Anyway, keep up the great work. This time let me suggest 'My destiny' for one of your Bee Gees marathons.
Chad, please, excuse me for sounding repetitive, but if you want to see Robin's more surprises, check up on his solo career in the '80s! Will blow your mind!
Yes, his solo album 'How old are you' is pure gold. But his album's 'Secret agent' and 'walls have eyes' and '50 St. Catherine's Drive' are really great too. There are some pretty good songs on 'Siters sing slowly', 'Magnet' and of course on 'Robin's Reign' too. Not to forget his Christmas album 'My Favourite Christmas Carols' and 'The Titanic requiem'. All well worth the listening.
Chad, what a perfect song to start our weekend off with. Our oh so talented guys were still quite young here and well on their way to being international pop superstars. And you were spot on about Robin's unique voice, always beautiful and full of surprises throughout the years!
Their versatility is amazing. Just watched a video of This Is Your Life Bee Gees. Interesting tid bit: Michael Jackson phoned in to congratulate them. He said that the Fever album inspired Thriller. Michael was good friends with all three boys, but especially Barry.
Like everyone else here I thought the song sounded Beatlesque, similar to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with the changing tempi. Kind of reminded me of early Moody Blues, too.
🥀Amazing Song I know they were influenced by the Beetles alot I've heard them say in interviews. I'm just saying what I heard Maurice say during his hard times. God Bless you 🥀☝️🥀
👍👍 I was looking at Robin and I believe this was done before they had their dental work done. I don’t even know why I noticed, maybe it is because I was in a oral surgeon yesterday. Yes, I agree Robin’s vocals were excellent
Photos are confusing as earlier ones of Robin show him with that tooth repaired and later ones still showing the silver cap. Then it’s back to repaired again! Always wondered when he found time to get the overbite sorted out as you never see him with braces but sort it he did. There are photos where Mo obviously has a brace but never Robin.
Oh my God. Where did this clip come from?! You can tell how early this is by Robin's silver tooth, lol. More and more clips are showing up of The Bee Gees performing album tracks on TV. So interesting. Robin's singing on "Bee Gees 1st" was much better than when he started to overuse the vibrato starting on "Idea" and through the early 70's.
Personally, I don’t mind the timing changes of the song. I find those shifts very interesting from a musical standpoint - maybe that’s why I love songs like “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles, “I've Seen All Good People” by Yes, and “Fool in the Rain” by Led Zeppelin. 🙂
Sounds like Stawberry Fields Forever. Before the disco and falsetto era Robin did most of the lead vocals on their songs. It was when they had their best music like Massachusetts, I Started a Joke, New York Mining Disaster. They are all on the Best of the Bee Gees 1.Most of the vocals were Robin. Anyhow this was an OK video but the only thing that saves this song is Robin.
Robin never did even half the leads on any of their albums. Three, four tracks tops. He had lead.on some of there classic hits but Barry always their lead singer. Whether that was as it should have been is another story but it was in fact the case. Barry expressed annoyance even years later that Robin ever even thought of being the front man after "Massachusetts" hit big.
Ok Chad i have an usual question for you. Ive been going through all the photos of Robin from 1967 through to 1977 and beyond. Has anyone but me noticed his teeth are different. He obviously had his overbite fixed and veneers put on his teeth.
I was going to type EXACTLY that! I was a Beach Boys fan way over the Beatles because they did that switch tempo on a number of songs. I think Brian Wilson is a musical genius. Not going to get into Beatles vs Beach Boys, but definitely influence is there. I didn’t care for the switches either. I found it distracting and will have to listen again to listen to the lyrics and whether they warranted those changes.
I have always liked this gem. Robin’s vocals are great.
God, robin is insane in this song, his voice is awesome.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 thank you so much chad for all the music you give us all.💕💕🎶🎶🎶🎶

Totally agree Chad robin is full of surprises 😮 x
Wow! They were so young here. Robin’s voice is perfection! Loved it! One last word: scarves!! ❤️👏
Just love love love Robin’s voice in this. He was incredible. How on earth was he only 17?
This is one of my favourites despite the the timing changes. It really showcases Robin’s capabilities.
OMG....Robin in all his beautiful musical glory! I love that man so much.
Robin’s voice is so hauntingly beautiful, especially at the beginning of this song. There will never be another like it in popular music.
I listen to this song at least twice everyday at work. I absolutely love Robin Gibb ❣️❣️❣️
When Robin was into his solo there was a point where Barry looked at him kind of amazed at Robin's vocals.
Robin voice..! again and again from an other world..!! Maurice was already the cuttest, and the most stylish..BG’s FOREVER 🙏💔❤️🇬🇧🎸
I think another thing that draws you to Robin is the expressions in his eyes and face.
Yes! He had the most soulful puppy-dog eyes.

Bee Gees are not afraid of anything I love their versatility

I LOVE this Song.... React birdie told me
Robin and your extraordinary and powerfull voice!!!!!
Even Barry at the end looks amazed at his brother Robins incredible voice!!!
Robin had the most amazing voice I've ever heard. Stunning.
Robin is simply amazing--showcase for his unique voice!
A good song from a CLASSIC album & they were teenagers then, amazing.
When you consider how young Robin was in this he was amazing.
Just kids! Gosh I miss them. I was 7 when this came out and already a fan. 🥰

Robin never disappoints
Robin 🤗meraviglioso!!
Robin and Mo were just 17 & Barry was 20 when they sang this one, yet there they are singing about someone getting old.
