Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for this movie. His acceptance speech made me cry. Great movie!
Benigni jumped on top of the seats as he made his way to the stage to accept his first award, and upon accepting his second, said "This is a terrible mistake because I used up all my English." 🤣

INFOS and FUN FACTS about the movie:
The story is largely inspired by the true events of a family member of Roberto Benigni; to be exact to an uncle of his wife (the same actress who plays his wife in the film, Nicoletta Braschi); This uncle was interned and survived in the Mauthausen camp in southern Germany, which was actually liberated by the Americans. Many people have identified the camp in the film with Auschwitz, a camp liberated by the Russians, accusing Benigni of having made a false history, perhaps to have better luck in American cinemas and to aim to win the Oscar. But it's not true. Benigni was ideally referring to the Mauthausen camp.
The meaning of the riddle: "Snow White among the dwarfs! Solve this riddle in the time that gives you the solution"; the answer is 7 minutes because in Italian "Minuti" means both "minutes" precisely, but also "something or someone of small, very small dimensions"... so the answer indicates both the 7 dwarfs and "the time that gives you the solution"...7 minutes.
In the scene where Bartolomeo returns to the dormitory with his arm injured and Guido asks him "how did it go?" and he replies "bad, they gave me 20 points!"... the joke plays on the fact that in Italian "punti" can refer to both the score of a game and the stitches. Clearly Bartolomeo was referring to the stitches.

This has been my all time favorite movie since seeing it in the theater four times back in 1998. The way Benigni mixes side-splitting humor, the greatest love story I've ever seen, and the Holocaust is just an amazing, amazing way of telling such a heart rending story. Roberto Benigni deserved even more Oscars for this: Screenplay, Director, and Best Picture to go with his Acting statue. The ending line by his son just tears me up, every time. And the first time I showed this to my wife, I received a text the next day where she was still outraged about the death, adamant that "he wasn't supposed to die", but that he does makes it so much more impactful a story. More people should see this film.
My college film instructor had us watch this in class.... Never thought I would sob in front of classmates, but couldn't help it. This film rips your heart right out of your chest.
In fact, I have to watch "Inglorious Basterds" immediately after viewing "Life is Beautiful" just to get some retribution for Guido

If you are struggling read this~ I know I’m young but I would just like to say that, In 7th grade I was in a very dark place. I couldn’t feel much emotion and I had thoughts of revenge and the other things. But God saved me, he gave me the people in my life and he showed himself to me. Even in my darkest days he was there with me, he never left me. One day while I was in bed I started to pray with my hand to the sky and I felt something holding my hand. At that very moment I knew it was him. I repent of all of the sins I have committed. I am ready to begin a new life with him. There is still time to repent love one another and believe in Christ for he will forgive you❤️ He helped me in hard times he will help you too:)
Truly one of the greatest father/husband put to film. He gave his wife the greatest gift, their child alive and innocence intact.
My aunt showed me this movie when I was probably 12 . It will forever be one of my favourites.. man . Such a heavy and beautiful movie

+CapedInfiormer: The Nazi soldier at 19:12 is the same actor (Richard Sammel) who played the captured Nazi soldier who was clubbed by the Bear Jew in Inglorious Basterds.
I saw this film when it came out with my grandmother, who was a teenager in Italy during WWII. It wasn't often that Italian movies came to the States.
She rarely talked about that period, other than meeting my grandfather (an American soldier) and anecdotes about going from being well-off to struggling, or dealing with shortages. After we left the theater, it was the first time we talked about what it was like growing up under a fascist regime--she said the school scene was very accurate, and it all seemed perfectly normal to her at the time.
His wife in the movie is Roberto's wife. He's a great director who also directed this movie.
The main actor came up with the movie because as a kid his father who had lived through that would try to explain everything in a way so that it wouldnt scare him and would try to make it funny in a way that would make fun of the evil people.
Oh I’m so delighted you did this reaction. I first saw this movie in theatre’s with my mom when I was around 10 or 11 years old, I believe, and I have only watched it once since then because it’s so incredibly sad. It’s an absolutely gorgeous movie with outstanding performances. It’ll rip your heart right out, though. Better get some tissue ready to watch your reaction.
It’s almost two different movies.
It starts as a whimsical, almost magical, fairytale, and then, BANG! Things become very different.
I guess it’s a microcosm for how it was for many European countries, the difference before and after Nazi occupation.
Such changes were so drastic. So abhorrent.
For the lucky few, those changes were temporary. Sadly, for many, lives changed forever.
Forget what most college students will tell you. We should be proud of our ancestors who fought to revert those aforementioned changes.

35:02 Props to you for doing the original undubbed version. The dubbed version is pretty damned good too, essentially because the two leads (husband and wife in real life) do their own English dub. However, the juxtaposition of suddenly hearing American English here is greater when everything up to this point has sounded foreign.
Oh,gosh,Nicoletta Braschi is already an awful actress in Italian,I can't imagine how she performed dubbing herself in English!X-PPP

my grandmother grew up in Anzio, she remembered as a little girl watching the trucks go down the street in the middle of the night from the window stopping in front of buildings and dragging whole families away to never be seen again, hiding in caves when the bombs were dropping
I first saw this movie one day in my tenth grade English class. It was near the end of the year and we'd already read Of Mice and Men and watched that movie, and this was an unexpected treat. Or, so we thought. My teacher didn't go into very much detail concerning what this movie was about, only translating the title for those of us who didn't recognize the Italian words. The first half of the movie and the last are in incredible juxtaposition, and the impact of the ending wouldn't have been nearly as heavy if it were a more overall somber film like 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' (which, come to think of it, we'd watched in English the previous year). Our teacher had us convinced that the soldier had been overpowered and our hero had taken his uniform to escape. Then the movie ended.
All these years later, the real gut-punch of this movie is something I only felt after a lot of personal growth. It's about a man whose goal, for the sake of love, is to share joy and beauty. And for his efforts, he was shot.
Hi! I watched this film at the cinema in Rome, I was 17, a masterpiece. Nicola Piovani's fantastic soundtrack also won the Oscar. I also recommend Johnny Stecchino, Roberto Benigni's first international success. It's a very funny comedy movie!
Holy Shit I am excited about this reaction!! This is my favorite movie of all time, I saw it when it first came out on VHS when I was 13 or 14. Such an incredibly beautiful, romantic, and devastating movie. Incredibly heartbreaking but so full of love and joy. Roberto Benigni created a masterpiece. My friend and I saw this in the theater with English subtitles. We literally sat in the theater after it was over and cried. I have never left a movie feeling devastated and hopeful at the same time. A complete masterpiece.
It was a Rollercoaster of emotions. It was an amazing movie. Please watch his acceptance of his Oscar was classic AF.

He and his wife star in another movie like this called The Monster its brilliant. Also two international really really good life movies are a Korean film called Baby and I 2008 and a French one called Ponette both have lead good acting

I'd like to suggest WWII film from forgotten part of the area: Captain Corelli's Mandolin that takes place in Greece during Italian - German Occupation. It has similar vibes than this. Where war is just backround for all events except last 20 mins.
I recommend you also see Down By Law by Jarmush, with Roberto Benigni. Very nice. Then it is played in English (also by Benigni!) and therefore there are no problems for you english-speaking No subtitles

Wow. You really are going down a path of sorrow and pain with your last movies choices. I saw this In the theatre and two things stuck in my mind… ‘Maria the key!’ And winning the tank. The man was ingenious to keep luck on his side.
If you want one more gut wrenching awesome movie, try ‘Under the same moon’. It’s a Mexican film and a real gem in my opinion.

We Italian have done a lot of errors along our history (like anyother peoples had), but the biggest one was to become allied of Nazist Germany, adopting the same racist laws !

I first watched this movie in high school. Because the school periods were short, the first 2 days of watching, I thought this was a comedy. Then, the third day of class, boom, holocaust. It was shocking. I have to imagine that is somewhat what life was like then, too. Seemingly ok, some things that seemed a little scary and out of place, and then suddenly the worst. I don't say that by any means to belittle the situation. Just an observation of how quickly things can change.

You'd be surprised how often I get told by Americans to "be grateful that the USA saved" me and when I explain it was actually Canada (I live in the Netherlands) they get upset and threathen with nukes if I don't quickly 'start respecting their superpower-country."
Just saying, there is a reason that those Jews are walking along those tanks with boombastic overly-happy music, with the Americans proudly looking around and looking oblivious to the horrors around them. I'm not at all suggesting there was no American help or anything, but there is misplaced pride and you showed exactly that.

Amazing movie. Another great one is Bridge on the River Kwai (has Obi-Wan Kenobi's original actor in it, Sir Alec Guinness)
and the best PRE-WWII movie is 'Cabaret' -- I hope you check it out sometime. I know you don't normally do musicals, neither do I, and 'Cabaret' never really feels like one; when people burst into song most of the time it feels oddly grounded and appropriate in-context and flows directly from the narrative structure; rather like 'Les Miserable'. I think you would enjoy it.
As an Italian guy I'm supposed to say the original dub with subtitles is the best but do y'all know there's an english dubbed version? I watched many reactions of this movie but maybe it's even better to watch that version just because you can concentrate more on the actors and visual stuff...
