"quality is outstanding" well it can get better as I have been working on a new generation of AM stereo technology, with build in noise reduction, high performance QAM transmitter and also is able to provide Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) information. I am currently calling it the C-QuAMv2 system, the plan is test this system out on the air over the next few years. If Motorola keep on developing their AM stereo format on from AMAX this is where it would of been today with all these improvements.

Watching this YT video from southern Tennessee, I tuned into the online player for which Rod Stewart's "You're In My Heart" began playing and having originally heard this song on A.M. radio in the 70's in mono and now listening to it on the A.M. stereo online broadcast, the effect is amazing almost concert like. I have saved this web address to my computer so I can bring it up anytime.
Hi Shango. Love the video. Always loved geeking out on radio transmissions. I found a 100 mw am c quam transmitter on ebay. It is a kit build. Can't wait to get up and running. I remember listening to am stereo back in the 80's in a old GM car. Great stereo separation. Been listing to WION on the interwebs. Thanks again for sharing. Take care. 🙂
Gotta love vintage radios, I have a old Westinghouse portable am pocket radio with flip out 120v terminals for charging, wind up watch, flashlight and above all the resistive element cigarette lighter! :)
Wish St. Louis, MO had an AM station that would play an oldies 50's & 60's format in stereo. I grew up with KXOK (630), a Storz Station. I played oldies at the Junior college station for 12 years on Sundays. Good Luck with you station!
Just bumbling about RUclips, probably after a Late Late Show bit or a CBS Mystery Theater show. Love your set-up and the detailed descriptions. I’m a HAM and gathered lots of info for a better quality AM signal and over the CROWN AM transmitter and all the nostalgia. Thank you for a great tour. I’ll attempt reception tomorrow but an doubtful. I really miss the old days of AM DX at night. ‘73, Bill Martin, KA1TIU
Fantastic documentary & thanks so much Shango & WION for sharing it with us all. That engineer is also a wealth of awesome knowledge & really love his passion & the passion of all the other WION station crew & the great sound reflects their excellence. The AM stereo image is so unique & remember Australia also adopting same but it was short lived when many AM stations started simulcasting on FM, many eventually moving over with only a handful left on AM broadcast. Wow, the modern DJ console tricks they used these days & a far cry from doing Friday night community radio with my brother back in the day around late 1980s (we had no on-air or caller "dump buttons") as we had to manually cue the carts for the station jingles & play a lot of music off CDs, plus fill out the running sheet for APRA (like RIAA song licencing) although being Friday night graveyard, they allowed us to play almost anything we wanted including Greek, Spanish, Serbian, Italian, Arabic, Pop Rai/Algerian, French. Crazy fun times for sure, helping to celebrate listeners birthdays, happiness & sorrows but the "famous" part & being recognised at record shops & out in public (they knew my voice haha) put me off. Pity we can't listen to the station from Australia directly from their website, but it seems to be available on some apps. Still listen to many AM stations including the Greek one which took over the old 3XY AM frequency as the English rock station had vacated to become 3EON FM & later became MMM Austereo network & meeting so many station engineers & on-air talent as a kid & later on which helped also inspire me to get into electronics & the tech industry
Fantastic tour of WION. 7:08 really resonates with me and should be mandatory for all AMs who are issued a translator. If the big companies put in a fraction of the effort these guys do, AM would not be in the decrepit state it is.
Really enjoyed watching the tour! Great to see the inside workings of a US local/streaming radio station. I've done radio work for the BBC in the UK in the past and some TV continuity announcing/VO and remember the complexity of the studios setups and transmission. Always fascinating.
New Orleans is about to add another AM stereo station...600 WVOG with it's BE1A..the AM stereo card was recently found still in it's sealed package! Engineer Tom Courtenay informed me Friday he discovered it. He's checking it now and plans to install it in the next week. That will make 600 and 940 WYLD both in New Orleans in CQuam!!
I am a former broadcaster in Eastern North Carolina. My fiancee and I are big fans of WION - The Biggest Little Radio Stations In America. We listen to WION very, very often online. What an awesome mix of music. It's "Classic Hits", but not confined to the same 300-400 songs of most larger market FM Classic Hits stations. They play the familiar hits, but also the hit songs that may not have made the top 10. I always hear music I haven't heard in years! They also serve their local communities as all local radio should. The station's over-the-air AM Stereo signal feeds their audio stream, which sounds great. To the WION crew: Many moons ago, we occasionally used the Ms. Miller version of "Happy Birthday" for a birthday segment on our morning show on WCBT-AM 1230 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. What a hoot it was to hear that voice (different song) again! Keep up the great work! We do love the station and wish you continued growth and success.
Thank you for the kind words! We hadn't been back to look at the video page here in awhile. GLAD you like what we're doing. Our crew appreciates your comments!
Excellent tour of WION!My how radio has changed since I was an engineer in the commercial AM and FM,and even analog TV.Now I work at VOA transmitter plant in Greenville,NC-their only remaining short wave US based transmitter plant. The newest transmtters here is 30 years old-oldest from 1962.We pride that we keep the original GE transmitters going. When I was in commercial radio----transmitters still hade the glowing "firebottles"--tubes-the SW transmitters I now run are all mainly tube based.120Kw,250Kw 500Kw.
Thanks for organizing this tour and everyone involved I really enjoyed it. I've watched a few others in my time but this was so informative, one of the best
In 1989 I worked at an AM stereo station in Laramie, Wyoming, KLDI. I worked in radio doing live broadcasting from 1986 to 1991. So much was done with Fidelipac carts and open reel tapes then. Everything is so different now.
Great video, Thank You. That would be so cool to hang out with a radio station engineer for the day. Behind the scenes, the equipment and folks who make it possible.
Wow ! Thanks for this. It gives me a little hope that maybe this is trend so that AM maybe making a comeback. I DJ’d in the 6o’s and nothing sounded better to me. Unfortunately, I can’t get this in NC
When I was a student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo CA back in the early 1980’s, I was a DJ on the school radio station, KCPR, 91.3 FM. At that time we had an analog mixer board similar to the one at station in this video, with the rotary pots and toggle switches. There was no computerization back then, so we played vinyl LPs and 45’s. We had three Technics SP-10’s that we had to keep cued up at all times, a cart deck and microphone. The station was 2,000 watts back then. Today, the station has relocated to another area of the graphic arts building, and is now state of the art, and they also broadcast over the internet. Those were fun times!
What a concept having one place online that has all the information rather than having it spread across multiple sites apps. I don't know why you can't say how to create a web link app. They're very handy and underused. Cool tour. Yes that's a lot of hops some of them probably could get more efficiently done but hey it's working for now. Appreciate the rebroadcast I guess that would be the word of an actual receiver, that's different.
AM Radio should benefit from some of the Tecsun Radios being manufactured today, radio's with 6 to 9 KHz AM bandwidth. It is important for the few AM Stations still playing music to tell listeners about the Tcesun line and have them look for the GE Super Radio 3.

I remember listening to am stereo back in the 80's in a old GM car. Great stereo separation. Been listing to WION on the interwebs. Thanks again for sharing. Take care. 🙂
Thank you for the stroll down memory lane because I so miss working in radio!
Wow. What a great upload. Thanks Shango.
Gotta love vintage radios, I have a old Westinghouse portable am pocket radio with flip out 120v terminals for charging, wind up watch, flashlight and above all the resistive element cigarette lighter! :)
Those are some funky monitors
Just a wealth of information always love your videos I've been watching you and your channel from the beginning
37:58 The Outer Limits was the show he was trying to recall. Great show!
Nice documentary. I was impressed by the passion these guys put in creating this radio.
53:18 omg we had that jolly green giant kid radio and I had forgotten about it until seeing it just now!
I could only wish other AM stations would go to C-quam, after the failure of AM HD it would be welcomed with increased audio quality.
Brilliant walk around
@@RadioAnnouncer This is how radio should be done.
@@ikonix360 We thank you! Tune-in Any time.
@@RadioAnnouncer You're welcome.
Been listening since 6:30 AM this morning.
Love the variety of genres as well.
Wow that’s amazing, 4,292 mi
Distance from Ionia Michigan to Finland
Excellent tour of WION!My how radio has changed since I was an engineer in the commercial AM and FM,and even analog TV.Now I work at VOA transmitter plant in Greenville,NC-their only remaining short wave US based transmitter plant. The newest transmtters here is 30 years old-oldest from 1962.We pride that we keep the original GE transmitters going. When I was in commercial radio----transmitters still hade the glowing "firebottles"--tubes-the SW transmitters I now run are all mainly tube based.120Kw,250Kw 500Kw.
Nice video. Great to know what all those boxes do in the 19" racks I see from time to time in the field. "AM doesn't need to sound like crap."
I really enjoy these am station videos, can't wait to check this out.
Thanks for organizing this tour and everyone involved I really enjoyed it. I've watched a few others in my time but this was so informative, one of the best
Nice mixing board!
And a very nice studio setup.
Thanks for the video!
In 1989 I worked at an AM stereo station in Laramie, Wyoming, KLDI. I worked in radio doing live broadcasting from 1986 to 1991. So much was done with Fidelipac carts and open reel tapes then. Everything is so different now.
Been listening all week!
Hell ya! Wion! I listen to them for Ionia Michigan as well!
Great video, Thank You.
That would be so cool to hang out with a radio station engineer for the day. Behind the scenes, the equipment and folks who make it possible.
I've gotten to do that with jim from WION best experience ever.
What a great tour! I'd love to work at a radio station someday... the engineering that goes into something like this is super interesting.
This has been a great series. I've learned a lot. Thanks for sharing.
That was fun. Thank you. Merry Christmas.
Terrific behind-the-scenes look at a really cool station!
A very cool insight to how a radio station works. Cheers to you all! 🍻 -Al Cox
I heard you request this song listening to Wion! This broadcast came out like a few weeks ago!
I worked for Jim over 15 years ago. One of the best bosses I ever had, and so very passionate about his craft and community.
It's a rack full of modded optimods...
I like it.
Nice tour!
Cheers,
Amazing vlog REALLY Enjoyed this one ! ! Real Nice set-up they have there. Thank You, Shango !
Wow ! Thanks for this. It gives me a little hope that maybe this is trend so that AM maybe making a comeback. I DJ’d in the 6o’s and nothing sounded better to me. Unfortunately, I can’t get this in NC
That was a nice tour. What a great station. Glad you could share this with us.
I remember in the late 1980s early 1990s. GM cars and trucks would sometimes have a AM stereo button.
My 92 chev pickup had am stereo and it worked pretty well.
Some Jeeps, including our 94(?) Cherokee, had AM stereo.
The Chrysler mini vans in the 90s had am stereo too in their premium sound systems. My city only had 1 am stereo station..
Very interesting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
My pastor is from Michigan, and he gets a laugh when people here in Ohio talk about bad snow days.
It's almost like he's doing a Shango impression, "here, here, here, here"........ As he forks all that equipment. LOL.
I received WION AM 1430, on car radio, 12/17/2022 about 4:20pm EST - Dayton Ohio. Verified songs online (Jackson Browne, Tom Petty).
Its good to see some older tech coming back good stuff.
