People are Talking - Skinheads After Geraldo Show (Pt. 1)

  • In late 1988, talk of skinheads in the New York media was all the talk. There was the WABC-TV piece, then the Geraldo episode where his nose was broken. After the Geraldo show, there was a program called People Are Talking, hosted by Richard Bey, that brought trad skins on to discuss what skinhead culture is. This program features the founders of S.H.A.R.P. We must note that we are talking about the media here. There are going to be stupid questions, and of course the obligatory bonehead that is also invited to the program.

      Television didn't actually look like this at the time. It only looks glitchy on RUclips because they're usually off-air recordings on VHS that people had for 20 years and it degrades over time. Also because people upload videos in compressed low-res copies. Just because a video is in 240p on RUclips doesn't mean we actually used to watch TV in 240p.

    This is what happens when you get a media show who is clueless about the history of the skinhead culture and takes a few young people and puts them on a show purely for sensationalism. A show that puts a condescending prick like Richard Bey in charge who continually patronises them and tries to get cheap laughs off the audience. He continuously ignores what they're saying and uses every sneaky trick in the book to try and make them fit the stereo typical view the public had of them at the time ! Has the media changed ?? It's even worse these days !

      Truth. I’m no skinhead but I know the history. Originally it was mixed and not about race. The racists liked the look and took it. I forget what it’s called when someone swoops on someone else’s culture, I hear the word a lot these days but I just can’t remember. ...Appropriate or something? I’m so old I remember the original punk and ska/ ski head movement and can’t remember the names. Also mods were tied up in that movement. Anytime I see a skinhead acting the tough guy and racist, remember they really are just posers looking for an identity. Good for these kids taking a stance against racist poser garbage.

Me and a friend and another fella started first 3 man crew here in Perth WA. Mainly cause so many boneheads kept turning up to local punk gigs at one time here mid 2000s. Just wanted to show rest of scene and new kids here that there was more to one side of skinheads. The crew only lasted like 3 yrs. But pretty sure we made some kind of positive influence.

      @colddaze6680 2 года назад

      Marcus Pacheco, the thinner fella with the claret v neck Fred Perry. He founded the very first SHARP crew based in NYC USA. I know this cause I discovered them and original SHARP being talked about in a Nyhc fanzine article in 1988 when I was still in England. Roddy was involved with AFA in Wales/Britain and the Oppressed were def the first openly anti racist Oi band he formed in 1982. But he has said himself he went to NYC visited with these fellas in 89'. And didn't bring SHARP as a group and an idea to England til bout end of 89'. Before then you just had normal non racist skins, and some 'red' skins in UK. To be honest Roddy fails to ever mention Marcus by name.. just says he brought SHARP to England on the rare occasion, always fails too mention Marcus's name or names of the other guys.. now I still got some respect for Roddy, what he done for skin culture over the years , the music he made with Opressed. And I heard he been skinhead since 1969. But when he mentions were SHARP comes from in future he needs to give proper credit where credit is due.

    As seen in this clip, the skinhead movement started in England in the late 70's when black and white youths from poor inner city areas, disillusioned with high unemployment and poverty found hope and energy in the ska music brought over by immigrants from the West Indies. They formed SHARP - SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice. Skins were not a political group, just passionate young people trying to make the best out of a shitty social situation in Britain at the time. I should know, i was one.

    • @colddaze6680
      @colddaze6680 2 года назад +1

      Skins came out of London late 60s. SHARP as a group was created by Marcus as seen in this vid in 1988. Marcus Troy and Bruce were part of the very first SHARP crew in NYC. Roddy Moreno of the oi band the Oppressed met up with them in 89'. Then brought back the idea of SHARP to the UK. I was a SHARP in Worcester in 88'. So that's how I know that one. You had your normal non racist skins from 70s. But you did not have SHARP as a group over there back ,cause it hadn't been created yet,just saying.

    skinheads really has nothing to do with looks it is an attitude and a mindset...the style is simply a way of expressing it openly...but the original skins did not have shaved heads just close cut hair and almost all skinhead girls have some hair normally bangs with a buzzcut on the back

    • @colddaze6680
      @colddaze6680 2 года назад

      The sub culture was named after the hair cut..a number 2 crop was as long as you were supposed to get.. or else was not short enough. Only the suedeheads wore hair bit longer , usually with side burns.Levi ,Wrangler and Brutus jeans, Ben Sherman's and Fred Perry polo and mod fit button down shirts did become the uniform as skinheads evolved their style. Before that the very first originals just wore plain white button down mod fit shirts usually with braces and turned up jeans or sta- press trousers. Any kind of boots were allowed before docs became popular, army surplus boots were popular before dr martens were. The girls would wear short skirts with stockings and lady Jane style shoes. Mod fit button down womens shirts with or without v neck cardigans/sweaters usually. Their hair cut was a feathercut. Lot longer than the boys with bangs, triggers on sides and dove tails at back. it was all about their clothes and style.. the culture was based around their style and their music from the late 60s to late 70s. Before any extreme political ideas came in from the outside. Skinhead attitude came their dress style - 'Hard and smart' and 'Suited and booted.'

    @NoPawn (continued) Skinhead emerged from the meshing of Jamacian Rudeboys and English individuals whose SEP(Socio Economic Position) is what one would call "working class". And yes NoPawn, the dominating theme in skinhead was not a Racist one or Nazi related. Far from it, it was simply two things: Music and Style(Ska,Ben Sherman,Levis). However, like brinkel stated, there were racist among them, whitch by no means am I implying that they rrepresented the culture as a whole. Jus a few bad apples

      Sharp is an identity now for anti racism skins, not really a group but a movement. A guy who isn't racist but takes people thinking he is a nazi and looking down on him for the love of the style and subculture has a lot more heart then a bigot thug who lives to offend and cause harm to minorities
