People don't realize the Germans actually produced more egg grenades, but the stick grenades were used for offense and they used the egg grenades for the defensive part of the war.
It produces a concussive blast with little shrapnel, making it theoretically ideal for assaulting a position. The stick provides farther throwing distance due to centrifugal force and the stick keeps it from rolling far upon landing. The reason why it worked as a tank buster was again because of the large concussive blast as the shock wave it would produce could go through the tank and damage the internals and injure, incapacitate or kill the crew. As for why it sees very little use today is because there isn't much of a reason to carry two different grenades essentially used for the same purpose (while we do still use concussive grenades, they are far less lethal) , while the stick part is more cumbersome and adds more additional weight.
