    I owned this game back in the day. While Virtua Racing was pretty cool on the Genesis I am very glad they made a Saturn version. The added graphics power made the racing much more smooth and fast and I loved he remix music. My favorite music track to this day is the opening at Bay Bridge on the Medium course and I LOVE the way the remixed it in this version. :)

      TWI was both a developer and publisher. My guess is that Sega didn't bother because their studios were already stretched thin at the time and Virtua Racing was a fairly dated game for a system that could support textured polygons.

    I actually don't think this is all that bad. I imagine it would play well with the 3d controller or the racing wheel. I should try it with the 3d controller. It's been a while since I played it but I do have it in my collection along with the 3d controller. I would like to get a racing wheel so when I do get one, it would be interesting to try it with this game. I do wish that Sega themselves ported the arcade game over to the Saturn and even better the original devs from AM2 to port it over. It's still not bad. I enjoy the music and it plays pretty good. It's still a fun game to play on the Saturn.

    Can we just appreciate, that W.B. developers even without any source code or help from Sega made a V.R. game from ground up, that is still close to the original, and they even added some features. Some people say this is the worse V.R. port, but i strongly disagree.

      Honestly, I feel like this is one of the better ports of Virtua Racing. The presentation isn't as nice as the 32X version, but it's got way more track variety and the gameplay still feels really good. Better graphically than the 32X version in that it has more detail as well as actual lighting, but should've been far closer to the arcade given the specs. There's a huge reduction in detail, presumably to keep it fast and smooth, the competing cars all look the same, the car sounds worse than the 32X version, and it's entirely in mono except for the videos. Weirdly, your video misses out the mid-lap jingles.

    why couldn't they make an arcade-perfect port?

    • @Chubbuluss
      @Chubbuluss 3 года назад

      Making an "Arcade perfect" port would involve emulating the original arcade version perfectly (or even better) on the desired hardware, like the Switch port does.
      The saturn wasn't powerful enough to compete with M2 hardware. Arcade perfect would have been impossible untill the Dreamcast, at which point Daytona USA had pretty much taken over completely and people largely forgot about Virtua Racing.
      Besides, SEGA didn't make this port, Time Warner did.
      Ontop of all of this, the Saturn was NOTORIOUSLY difficult to program for due to its dual 32 bit processor setup.
      If your talking about porting the game with no extra additions that the Arcade didn't have, what would be the point in porting it to the Saturn, a system with enough storage on its game media to store a plethora of new cars and tracks.

      Le Docteur FlatOut is noticeably much darker and has some really awful-looking shadows. I've been able to correct the darkness in PCSX2 by adjusting brightness, contrast, and color saturation, but I can't do anything to fix the shadows.
      FlatOut also has some gameplay issues too. Tire squeal is really excessive. The slightest turn is enough for the sound effect to kick in. You never have to worry about spinning out in the grass because if you so much as clip a single blade, you come to a near dead stop. Collision on the drones is all kinds of fucked up. You so much as come into contact with one at any speed from any angle (side, back, and front are all treated the same), you're spinning out.
