Prior to that Video Music Box, Graffiti Rock and even Soul Train. Even though Don C hated Rap Music, considered it a fad and had had live acts very rarely. However all of those shows with the exception of Soul Train were on cable, paid service or local access. Arsenio was nationally syndicated, on a network, night show. No one else was giving the music and the culture that level of exposure. Arsenio also had the real MCs (Rakim, Heavy D, KRS, PE, Tribe, Ice T, NWA, Kool G Rap, Run DMC, etc).
I will say that as a late 80s baby, this is so awesome to see. The OG legends coming together and drop dope ass performances and show so much love to Arsenio. GZAs almost fade in with the lyrics and then the crowd when he flashed the Wu was so fuckin sick.

Its why MTV started Yo MTV Raps, and opened the door for Living Color, Fresh Prince, Family Matters, Living SIngle. Arsenio and (sadly) Cosby's empire of TV shows changed TV forever even though black voices would be greatly reduced into the late 90s and 2000s. The early 90s was a highwater mark for not just black faces on white made shows, instead, POC on shows produced by POC. HUGE difference.

Damn that takes you way back to my college days. And my cross color outfits that I used to wear. I remember my mom watching this arsenal Hall episode with me and my sister and my other brothers he was off the hook. And my mom was dancing to this music. That's why I love about my people's music The older generations can groove to it also. Hip hop truly transcends our people's culture and way of life throughout all time!!!
