I agree with Melzas below, I’m a black woman and my husband and I are in academia you can look us up online- what she has said is the trend for whatever the reason, it doesn’t mean she is racist, she may even be trying to help. There should be an investigation. We need to see more, I don’t think the firing is just. I have to be honest.

The professors were holding a zoom class with law students, when the class ended they stayed on the zoom talking candidly as posted in GMA’s clip. However a student had recorded the zoom and later uploaded it to Twitter. There is a second clip where the professors implied that it was their biases that lead to the difference in grades. Ummmmmmm, these conversations happen all the time. I teach in public HS and educators have conversations all the time about the performance differences between different subgroups, and some groups are based on race. She didn’t say anything bad, especially if it’s true. Georgetown just punked out because they didn’t want the backlash. But if the students who consistently score low in her class are black then Georgetown needs to address the learning gaps, not fire the professor for pointing out facts. 🙄
And honestly, that learning gap is from way back in elementary school and probably even prior. She wasn’t nasty with her comment; she actually sounds concerned.

    • @julianfischer2341

Best comment I've read on this video. Yes, the problems in academic achievement often have to do with early chidhood development and even attachment styles and the kind of support children had that shape their personalities and study habits as they get older.
Plenty of other reasons between subgroups.
Boys for example, struggle much more in school and are more likely to drop out than girls. Most special needs classes are majority boys. Higher rates of dyslexia, autism spectrum disorder, speech impediments, and attention deficit disorder among boys. There's also greater variablity in IQ among boys, less agreeableness than girls after puberty, etc.
Should a teacher be fired for stating boys drop out more? It's important to note such facts.

    • @andiidoode
      @andiidoode 3 года назад +6

She was pointing out " the facts" in a gossip session with a colleague "here we go again, those low blacks". Black students don't stand a chance with a professor with that kind of bias. I've no doubt that she's part of the problem [and not the solution], and the university would have seen that too. Removing her is the right thing to do, if they are going to start to have more successful black students.

You make us look bad. Also, in law school, the grading should be anonymous. If it's blind grading, then the problem should be addressed. If not, she's racist. There are studies that show that law professors grade black students lower than non-black students. I didn't do the studies. I just read them. Bottomline: Don't cape for white people in these situation sis. If you really, really, really agree with the racism, do it in silence.

If you are a black law student then you should be keenly aware of how racist her comment is. If you want to know why, consider this: How is it, that she somehow knows that her lower performing students are black? What does she mean by that? Who is she including in her estimation? Is she including brown skinned Asian students as well as black students? What if the reality is that her low students are her more economically disadvantaged students? What if there's a comparison to be drawn along other lines, such as gender, which colleges they came from, what their LSAT scores were, whether or not they had taken legal writing (or some other particular course) yet? There are several factors that could be assessed to draw conclusions about her low performing students. But SHE is the one pointing to skin color, and that clearly demonstrates the scope of her consideration. She has already drawn a link between skin color and grades in her course. And THAT is what the problem is.
I don't agree with you that there's some other "real" problem, for which we should refrain from just firing her. Professors like her ARE the real problem.

This problem started in grammar school because the push is to pass onward and no teacher is going to risk it job due to mandates they have to observe. Have a real conversation about students performing below standards. These institutions have to stay open and willing to accept those parents who are willing to pay those hefty cost or get loans that they will have to burden the rest of their lives. Do you have any idea how colleges and universities have closedown due to financial difficulties?

First of all depending on class size how is she paying that closely to each and every student that’s black? How is she making all those correlations and assessments without even doing scientific studies on it. Before you make a claim that further contributes to the stigma that all black people are dumb (cause me & u both know it does) actually do a study instead of your plain ignorant observations and random correlations. Yep, this exactly what happens, especially in law schools. They give full ride scholarships to the top students and then to compensate, let in underperforming students (many times URM's) at full sticker (see inflated) price. This helps them meet quotas and get paid their $$$. The lower students tend (not always, but often) to perform below average and have a much more difficult time in school as well as finding jobs when they graduate. They are then saddled with all of the debt, basically paying for the top students to attend for free. The school doesn't care because they get their money and the bank doesn't care because the government guarantees the loans. Meanwhile the underperforming students are saddled with debt and have difficulty paying it off.
Source: I currently have a full ride to a law school. There's no way I'd pay full price what some of these schools charge.

People of any color or no color who have a weaker background will have more trouble - especially at Georgetown Law - which has some of the top students in the country. The school should put the stats out on the pre-Law achievement (grades, LSAT scores, and college ranking) and you will see Black Americans are lower on average (not all)- we all know that - its called Affirmative Action - and it can do a lot of good . She said "lower (performing)" they are still passing - Law school is super competitive. The school is reprehensible. I hope she sues them - she is a lawyer.

To conclude she had bias against blacks from her statements is not logical. Call it angst or being distraught, she didn't like the outcome - how would you conclude that she is working to ensure the outcome? Most law school testing is multiple choice or question that are not ambiguous to answer - hence grading is not impacted much by any bias - and there are too many students in a class to even think about that.

Another point is that it's not difficult to get good grades, and it doesn't make you the smartest person. All people can be intelligent and smart and it has nothing to do with race, there are many other factors that contribute to how well you do in school, such as motivation, mental health, economic situation, etc.

At the College/ University level, especially elite academic Universities, and even more in specialized schools within those Universities like their law, Med, Engineering, and Business schools, students must perform. These are fast paced, highly competitive environments. It is not a College professor’s job to volunteer as a study buddy for any student. Typically students form study groups with each other or hire more senior students to help them if they are struggling. They have to be incredibly disciplined and micro manage their daily schedules. A University student is a young adult responsible for their success or failure. If and when a student is falling behind they must recognize it and act swiftly in their own best interest. A professor can provide recommendations and resource lists, and there are professors who head up study groups but that is RARE. The reality is that there are no academic victims in the Law School at Georgetown. If a Law Professor with 20 years under her belt at such a respected institute of higher learning speaks about an observable pattern the likelihood is that it is factually accurate. Why is her stating that fact racist? She didn’t create the circumstances that led to some students not doing as well as others. She seemed to me like a person expressing a moment of frustration about a pattern she has observed over time that hasn’t changed. How is that racist? And why is it that people seem to look through the harshest and least generous lens today? Human beings are not perfect and in this time of hyper charged tension, self promotion, the trampling of American liberties and the overwhelming lack of nuance in discourse, where every power center feeds the narrative of racial division and pours gas on embers and salt on wounds for votes and ratings and the adolescent glee of canceling someone whose eyes you don’t have to look into as they lose everything, the greatest victim is our humanity.

This is crazy... She is saying a higher number of her lower grades are black, then the reporter says how only 14% of teachers their are black... Neither of those are due to color, it's the preformance of those students keeping them at the bottom and hence if less are getting good grades on general and graduating that means less to teach at a college.... I'm so over that so of a sudden you can't say anything without it being racist. Others are telling her what she was thinking and saying, there's no freedom of speech anymore or freedom to be an individual... Well I'm not confirming and I'm not racist and I hope we can start putting the same amount of energy and drive and power into real important issues like saving our planet and oceans that are dying and we rely on to even be here.... That's what is going to kill us, not racism, it's going to be our own selfish and twisted way if viewing things. We need to cancel social media and redo how the news is delivered, e need fact checkers again, wet need full stories told... I want to hear what her whole video did, not just the clip of her saying that 1 thing, or reminds me of another case that is being twisted and it's scary.

You should really read the book “Whistling Vivaldi”. There is actual, credible evidence done by many, many social psychologists that proves that a student’s behavior and study skill are only a small part of why certain groups historically do poorly in certain areas when compared to other groups. This goes for race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, etc. Any single group you can think of. The main premise is a concept called “stereotype threat”, which means that a person who identifies themselves with a particular group will feel the threat of a negative stereotype associated with that group when it is present in real life situations. This threat is proven to be so strong, that it significantly impacts a person’s performance.
I used to think along the lines of what you said here, but after reading this book for one of my college classes it really changed my perspective. I’m a white, young adult, woman who has absolutely no idea what minorities must feel when they’re in school. I really do encourage you to read it, and to recommend it to others if you like it. Decently cheap on amazon too.
      www.amazon.com/Whistling-Vivaldi-Stereotypes-Affect-Issues/dp/0393339726/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=whistling+vivaldi&qid=1615612415&sprefix=whistling&sr=8-1

@@sassysigns8029 I understand that concept... Someone tells you you are something over and over you start believing it, that's just human reaction... As a child my parents would say to me "be careful you are more likely to be drug and alcohol addict and just don't do it, cause of genes. it was over and over and over, so at some point my ingrained behavior was to fall into that cause that's all I heard and not taught why or how to change or avoid.... I was told I was something before I even had a chance to not be that or figure out who I was... So I get what you're saying. But reality too is that at some point, ee do ferro to dictate who we are and what we do and wet get to choose how to channel that to others and teach others to be better... It's overcoming the blame game and owning my actions, behavior, words, thoughts... Everyone wanted someone or something to blame, there are no mistakes allowed or responsibility put in individuals. It's always "so and so fault or this happened due to this or mental health caused them to kill 4 people..." but then whoever is going against the grain is torn down and loved ruined and judged, it's all on that person noone or nothing else to blame.... So I see your point and have been there but there's a flaw to it...I'm this case, the students have a choice to not me in bottom percent, not to fall into whatever bubble they have been placed in... We each are in power of our own lives, good and bad.

The school felt that they are not able to grade their students anymore, and removed them. That is why it is being reported as racism or unprofessional acts by professors.

      GMA misrepresented the story,

      @where's the lamb s a U C E Agreed.
To question a difficult statistic is not racist. It is documented that black students score lower across many disciplines although the reasons ARE systemic, not due to personal or cultural failings.
Perhaps she said other biased things omitted here, but this sound bite alone is not enough to move her from “someone having a difficult conversation where she’s obviously not the most fluent (e.g.,: ‘blacks’)” to “someone who is actively harming her students by expressing blatant bias.”
There are too many unknowns for this brief clip to be considered fair journalism, unless this is just a snippet as part of a longer investigation.
      1) What was the professor’s ultimate point? Her conclusions aren’t clear from the clip.
      2) Was she open to a change in her practices and assessments or was she justifying a resignation to view all black students as underperforming regardless of evidence?
      3) Was she stating all this in front of her students, or was this meant to be a private and confidential conversation? It matters because we have a BIG problem with online communication becoming a convenient excuse for unfair surveillance where - if she was asking for help in-person - her statements here alone would not have led to such an extreme outcome.
Rant: White people NEED to have these conversations with each other (and I am just repeating what other black & brown scholars have said). White people should be well-informed and do their homework, but they should also be able to work through their general frustrations to one another without black & brown people having to bear all the burden of informing them of the centuries of histories and systems built up to maintain their status superficially. They need to understand that ALL people experience suppression and hardship, but the pressures are compounded over and over with each identity that’s subject to bigotry, ESPECIALLY when you factor in darker skin color, obvious facial or other observable physical features, ethnicity, and culture.
If the conversations black, brown, and white people had together started with, “I was reading about white ethnic identity development in the U.S. and how it’s different in some ways from black and brown identity development...” - and people could actually be patient with the complexities, believe the research, AND affirm one another’s experiences - man, we could be so much better. It’s a lot to ask but we fight the fight that needs fighting.

I'm confused. College professors literally hold department meetings to solve the achievement gap between White/Asians and non-Asian students of color. You could copy/paste the fired prof's remarks into one of those meetings and they would sound like any other Friday afternoon meeting. So I'm trying to figure out the issue. It's not like she was conspiring to give lower grades to her Black students. What she meant by her anxiety was:
    1. professionalism compels her to grade all students by the same standards
    2. applying those standards make some groups show up in the lower end of the distribution curve
    3. this creates a real but awkward/uncomfortable reality
    4. outsiders noticing such distribution differences could automatically accuse the prof of discrimination - that possibility is what's giving her anxiety

Law professor of 20 years fired for telling the truth and expressing genuine concern for black students. Makes sense.

Therein lies the problem! Truth = Racism now. Insanity. Betcha that professor (like most) is even an “old school liberal” who wants to try to find a way to right a wrong IF something is even wrong. Who knows what to think anymore??🤔🤷🏻‍♀️
