I have followed along many of the videos on the Cane Mill. Bit by bit, it came together. However, had I seen the original photos when it was recovered, I would have regarded that as a complete loss. Due to the owner's perseverance and your own work, it will now run again, and I look forward to seeing that. Your videos are a great pleasure to watch.

Congratulations on finishing that huge project Keith! I know the feeling of having a bigger project like that plugging-up your 'to-do' list. In my woodshop! I needed to do a rebuild on my thickness planer to clear out the rust from poor storage, but it seems as though there is an extra little thing to do around every corner - but I will have a better than new planer (new spiral cutterhead, digital depth gauge, etc.) for the new year, and that's always a good thing! 😊

I spent several years aboard aircraft carriers, and my immediate thought when seeing the strain on the wrecker's winch wire was, "Stay far enough away so that when it parts and whips around you don't lose any of your own parts." Thankfully, the wire held, and we can all look forward to another year of great videos.

It was done, I reckon, pretty much the same fashion it is still done in India - where they produce "country side" (or "deshi" - which means just that, hence, for instant, "Bangla-desh", the land of Bangla people/ folks, but I digress here) unrefined cane sugar called jaggery or gurr - see:
"Traditional Jaggery Making ... from Sugar Cane", ruclips.net/video/hjVWH6bDg7U/видео.html
The main difference would be, I guess, that the evaporation process was shorter, and there was better filtration process employed prior to it - and generally more attention paid to cleaning the cane befor crushing it, but then this is India, y'see... (and things are done differently there ;-)
Again, I'm not sure how exactly it was made in US, but then there's not much options here, so I assume this was pretty much the same way (give or take) as it was done in US a century or so ago.

Jim, I hope you are successful with this endeavor, and I hope you don't just resurrect the cane mill, but also your family business. I enjoyed the fascinating history of the giant cane mill. Must have been hundreds of acres of local cane grown back then to support such a huge operation. A thick coat of heavy grease or soap on the slant-back bed to reduce friction would have made loading so much easier and safer.

Hey Keith I've really enjoyed the Cane Mill project from start to finish. I have also been wondering about the Stoker for some time, and was glad when you brought it back up. It has been around the block for sure, and it is most fitting that you put the finishing work to it. Thanks for sharing all of these fun, and sometimes frustrating projects with us. Retirement should include an increased amount of Family time in my opinion. Enjoy it while you can. Remember that your involvement in the lives of close friends and Family can have influences far past the present time, you may never know how much, but you will make a difference. Looking forward to when we might see a video of it in action. It would be great to learn more about how that bed was straightened. That looked almost terminal. When it is almost scrap, there is no harm in trying. Not like you're still making payments.
As a friend's wife put it, she was so busy in retirement that she didn't know how she ever had time to work. As another friend put it, when I asked him why he didn't retire, he had too many friends that passed shortly after they retired. You have to stay busy, hopefully doing something you enjoy that keeps mind and body active. I think Keith has definitely got it dialed in. Hope all works out for years to come.
