      +Francisco Francesconi The problem is the places where you can get IDs sometimes open once per week during the middle of the day, so it's hard for someone who works 40 hours a week to get one. They purposely keep strange hours to make it hard to get one.

      Take into consideration on how long DMV lines are, and also people without transportation. If you are living on a minimum wage, you cannot afford to miss a single hour of work. No sick days, no vacations, you could be fired for missing hours of work.

      Mayo But the government should provide the means to everyone get their ID. Even in Brazil there were massive campaigns to register everybody (80's and 90's), so all citizens even in the most isolated regions in the Amazon forest had an ID. Nowadays it is reçatively simple to get an ID or register a newborn. Social programs, also recquire IDs in order to stop fraud.

    • @Hfajardo97

      +ragmondead Buying alcohol or cigarettes is not a civil duty, voting is. EVERY American has the duty to vote but voter ID laws constrain that because citizens have to pay for IDs and it is a long process. If the nation demands IDs then they should make IDs easier to obtain and IDs should also be free. That way no American has no reason to not get an ID. If the government isn't willing to pay for what they require in order for citizens to fulfill their duty then they should accept other forms of ID or social security numbers instead.

    • @ragmondead

      The problem here is in the ease to attain ID. I 100% believe every American should have the right to an ID. But I also am competently opposed to voting without ID. Hell even my college makes me show my school ID when I vote.

    I don't understand why this is an issue. You need ID to drive, buy alcohol, buy cigarettes, open a bank account, get food stamps,welfare, social security, renting or buying a house, getting married, buying a gun, picking up a prescription, and donating blood. And you need them to vote in Canada. I have a seriously hard time believing that a significant amount of people would not be able to get one. It just seems like a fabricated issue to me.

    • @theuntalentedcreative8044
      @theuntalentedcreative8044 8 лет назад +7

      +Ryan McKinney A person over 18 may not have a government issued photo ID because they may not have the resources to get one. There are many reasons that people in these specific groups they mentioned may not have an ID. To start, the most commonly issued state ID that includes a photo throughout all of the US is a driver's license. From a bureaucratic standpoint, those would be the easiest IDs to obtain, but even obtaining one of those could be difficult if a person does not have the same privileges you and I enjoy. For one, a driver's license costs a lot of money. Not directly to the government, but indirectly in the process to acquiring one.
      A person would have to first spend money on in-classroom driver's education, which is commonly $200-$300. There's also an opportunity cost to these classes. An adult with a full-time job, or a child in high school working part time to help support their family may not be able to get the time off to go and take these classes - about 14 hours of training crammed into just a few days. Not to mention that if they do not have a driver's license it may be difficult to actually get to where the classes are being held.
      Then, they have to take the blue slip of paper they get for passing the classroom exam from the course to an assigned city or state government building to take the exam to get their driver's permit. Often times, you are required to take this exam during normal business hours, which would coincide with school if a person was in school or work if they were working full time. Often you are charged $10 to take the test.
      Once someone overcomes the hurdle of successfully completing the driver's education exam, they are required to take behind the wheel training. These have to be taken through a driving school and also cost upwards of $100. They are also usually done during business hours. This is yet more time that a person would need to arrange to be out of school or work.
      Then, even if they've finished all of their behind-the-wheel sessions, a person has to have another 30 hours of logged driving experience in various conditions (night, rainy, snowy, icy, etc.). This requires someone to either have a family car they can use, have a family friend's car they can use, or to rent a driver's education car for the day, which can also be economically prohibitive. This also requires someone to have an already licensed driver that can supervise their practice in the car. In many poor communities, very few people have driver's licenses because very few people can make it past this part of the process.
      Finally, once you've finished all of your 30 hours of training, you need to make an appointment to take the test, again be out of work or school for at least a 1/2 day, have a car that you can take the test in (or again, rent a driver's ed car), and pay the $10 assessment fee. Even making the appointment would be difficult for anyone without a computer because often the only way to sign up for these testing slots is online.
      So in total, this process just cost a person $320 (assuming that their class was $200, $10 permit fee, $100 behind the wheel, and $10 assessment fee). That's a lot of money for a person living paycheck to paycheck who does not own a car and never intends to use this ID to drive. It's also a lot of time thrown into tasks to receive an ID for which you will not be using it for it's main purpose.
      Some states do offer state issued photo ID's that are not drivers licenses but they are very hard to find, many states don't offer them, and they actually have even more complicated steps to acquire one.
      TL;DR: We can only require state issued ID's to vote, when everyone is issued a state photo ID by default and it does not cost any money.

    Most democratic countries require photo identification to vote. While I believe the reason behind these laws are nefarious, the laws themselves should be in place. One law I would like to see is a national holiday for Election Day. That would increase votes which in turn would give a more accurate representation of the people's choice as a whole. This too isn't a law for political reasons. Remember to vote :)

      +Solid Rollin The problem is that in most democratic countries (like Germany where I lived for 10 plus years) the federal government requires you to have your federal ID for many things besides voting, so everyone has one.
      The republicans are completely against any type of federal ID card because they want that control to be with the states. So while I do see the need for everyone to have an ID, I also see that the republicans are trying to take advantage of the situation with the current (stupid) state of identification in the USA and the voter ID laws they want.

      +Peter John You have valid points. I don't argue that there are political agendas in play. Whether a law should be state or federal is an argument that's as old as this nation. I tend to side a with a state's right to form its own law until they become unconstitutional.
      I don't see that a federal law requiring ID is necessary for required ID to vote. It's common sense to require ID for voting just like it is common sense to require ID to purchase a fire arm (another right).

      +twdziki Its because we have a long history of racists using lots and lots of ways to make it so minorities and the poor cannot vote. Voter IDs aren't a bad idea but the state governments do not make it simple or easy to get them. They are costly (to the poor) and require you to take time off work and/or hours and house to get. Worse, states often hide requirements, so you can show up to get your ID but the clerk will tell you you actually need a particular form, card or reference that you cannot reasonably just acquire right then and there, so you will have to come back at a later date with that information (which means more time off work and more time wasted).

      This is why people take a hard stance against voter ID laws in the US - because the laws are used as a cudgel to make it so the poor and minorities cannot vote.
      It used to be you didn't need an ID to get a library card. I suppose people just don't get them any more (or, more likely, go to a library, read, then leave without checking books out).

      +krim7 Free government photo IDs can be obtained for free (through a request made to state governments), this means that even the homeless can vote after these laws are passed in all 50 states.
      Please explain to me what the rel problem is, I dont understand why this is a controversy instead of a blanket pass law across all 50 states.
      Also, it sounds like SOMEONE is trying to make a stink by saying the 'poor and minorities', sounds racist of you, to immediately associate being a minority to being poor. Are you saying that rich minorities can vote while the poor ones cannot? Because if THATS what you meant then your previous statement is proven racism. Because if what I corrected is what you meant, then you should have not said 'minorities' and just simply said 'poor', but 'poor' was disproven by my earlier comment in this same post.

What we HAVEN'T been doing is making those ID requirements onerous. --It's also entirely obvious that existing ID laws are more than sufficient to deter meaningful in person voter fraud, given how few prosecutions there were under George W. Bush.
      Put one more way--let's say new Voter ID laws would have deterred ALL 86 people who were prosecuted under Bush for voter fraud, but those new Voter ID laws additionally keep 1,000,000 people from voting. As a conservative who wants limited government, do I really want to make that dysfunctional tradeoff?

It seems implausible that an ID wouldn't be needed to vote. Our ancestors fought hard to establish a government voted on by the people. It shouldn't be equated to the over the counter purchase of a candy bar. Give it the dignity it deserves. If you are having a hard time getting an ID, ask friends, family, or neighbors. If they aren't able to help, contact your local political party headquarters. They will definitely find a way to help.

      ID is one thing, photo ID is another. For people in lower income homes, a lot of those things you mentioned aren't things they do. Cars are too expensive for many people, bank accounts don't make sense for the fees you have to pay, and people lack the spendable money to go out and drink. Getting photo ID isn't something that is easily done, it takes a lot of time, which might either take someone over the due date to register to vote, or take time that they need to work long hours.

      +kemita when you register to vote you have to prove who are through various measures including date of birth and driver's license number or social security number. This does not require having a government issued ID, but you are still proving who you are. When you register to vote you prove who you are, there should then be no need to do it a second time when you actually vote. In addition the forms of ID these laws require cost money which many lower income individuals simply can't afford. This is why people, myself included, believe these laws to be unnecessary obstacles for those who want access to voting, but cannot afford to pay for ID.

    The problem is not that you need an ID to vote. The real problem is the access to an ID. I'm from Canada and we need to show an ID for voting. The difference is that everybody here have an ID. You can use your passport, your driving permit, your health assurance card (which you have since you are born), your First Nation card, or anything else. In the US, there's not a single ID that is given to you. You need to pay for having one. And it's mostly the people who need the most to vote (minorities) that they can't pay for an ID.

    • @atlas6145
      @atlas6145 8 лет назад

      +Olivier Blais-Turcotte It's honestly not that hard to get an ID in the US. It's not free and I would support a process where ever citizen gets a free state ID but the walls currently in place aren't that high. It's maybe an hour of your time and $5-25 fee depending on where you live.

      @olivierblais-turcotte2841 8 лет назад +3

      +Atlas61 You are right about the fact that a $5-25 fee doesn't seem too much for us and probably for others too. But, for example, if you are homeless, it could be very difficult. The first thing that comes in mind is the fact that you don't have the money to buy an ID. But, you also need an address which you can be registered with and one for receiving it. They won't register you if say you live under a bench. We cannot forget that you also need a way for transporting yourself at the centre of registration. It's true, an ID is probably not expensive, if you don't look at all the other cost that comes with it.

      +laserwolf65 None of those things you listed are rights, and if you are raised and born into a state of poverty that you could not even imagine, many times a $35 driver's license with a permit test fee, *plus* driving school fee to get a driver's license is less important than feeding your many children and paying your rent etc. There are countless roadblocks to obtaining it when you are so poor that you basically can't even keep a roof over your head; and a person, like the countless ones I just described, has to have the right to elect someone into office or a place of power in hopes that the person they elect will help them get out of their s**t hole situation that they very well may have had almost no control over and no say in from their time of birth. That's how.

    In North Carolina, banks explicitly bend the rules for ID requirements when cashing checks. In minority-heavy and impoverished areas, they allow people to use their Social Security card, eliminating one of the major reasons for people without cars to get a photo ID. Then when elections roll around, these people are far less likely to have the requisite ID to vote.
    This kind of corporate and government behavior should be illegal.

  • @AdityaGoyal10
    @AdityaGoyal10 8 лет назад +1

    Please try to understand that this video is not biased, it's incomplete. The real issue with legislation that requires a government-issued ID is that in these states, in minority neighborhoods, it is unconstitutionally hard to get a voter ID. John Oliver made a video about this issue where the office is open for about 4 hours on every 5th Wednesday of the month. In 2016 there are 3 months: March, June and August before the election. So 12 hours in a year for millions of minority voters to get their ID. Also, most of the people cannot afford to take time off work to go and get a voter ID because the government officials will raise sometimes illegitimate objections and make the residents come multiple times to get a voter ID. It is not the law that is an issue, it is how the access to an ID is restricted by the same states and how the party targets areas with minority voters to enact these restrictions.

    If having to pay to renew (or even just get one) your ID is an issue, then demand to make them free. No "poll tax" if renewing or getting one is free. If having to get to a DMV is an issue. Then advocate to have ID/renewal centers placed in libraries 3 weeks before and during elections.
    Still not enough? Then argue to be able to do renewals online as well.

    Back then you could deny certain groups the vote because those certain groups could be denied ids. Now the only way you can be denied an ID realistically is if you aren't actually a citizen meaning literally the ONLY THING this law is doing is preventing people too lazy to get an ID from voting even though they didn't plan on it anyways, and preventing illegal immigrants from voting. These laws are a good and much needed change.

    In Germany you have to show your ID to vote. How do you prevent people voting multiple times if they don't show ID?

    ID in voting seems fair, most countries have it. But the difficulty in obtaining IDs is appaling. What common sense when you don't even have the common sense to make them available.

    the problem is people thinking you can just go and get yourself an id. its not a simple process and required a lot of unecessary bullshit some people just cant go through

    Wait, aren't driver licenses valid photo ids? Most voting places are in libraries and schools. Except for the few people who live in the same neighborhood as a school, wouldn't you drive to vote?

    while their motive seems wrong I don't think this is an extremely restricted law pretty much every person over 18 will need a photo ID eventually and if someone wants to vote they should look up what exactly are the steps they need to take before election day and find out what they need to do to take those steps.

    what kind of debate is this? literally all other countries where you can vote require some kind of identification.

    The question here is: how cone so few people have a photo ID?
    In a lot of European countries, everyone over the age of 18 has a photo ID (and some have a drivers license or a passport added to that).

    That's funny. In Brazil, although we being obligated to vote with the risk of losing a lot of rights if not, we have to go to a special "electoral region" to get an "elector title" which is one more of many many different mandatory documents we have to get during our life. And guess what? It's mandatory to have it but not to take it with you to vote. In fact, it only has legitimacy together with some officially issued photo document.

    Can we acknowledge the fact that a state issued ID costs about $10? You also need a photo ID to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, to drive a car, to open a bank account, to purchase a house, etc. You might as well have to prove yourself when electing the leader of your country. In my opinion, it is racist to assume that minorities have a more difficult time getting an ID. Everyone has an equal opportunity to get an ID as well as vote. If you are making excuses as to why you can't get an ID or how it is so discriminatory, then most likely you either shouldn't be voting or committing a voter fraud yourself. the reason why voter fraud hasn't been proven is because it is almost impossible to track based on our secret ballots. All in all, if you are an eligible voter, you most likely have an ID, so please, stop making excuses, and get out there and vote.
