Hamilton was known for having really attractive eyes. They were written about quite a bit. Historically Angelica WAS married by the time of the ball and meeting Hamilton, but in the story it was decided to not have her married in this point of the timeline. However, historically Hamilton went through his whole life and past with the family which lead him to being seen as trustworthy enough to marry into the family after Angelica's husband ended up being shady and his lies about his past caused the family issues. Also a great point in Helpless is that both in the story/song and historically Eliza falls in love with Alexander via his letters. Alexander is well known for his writing, it's how he got to the 13 colonies, with Washington, his positions later in the story and history, and here with Eliza. As for the approaching someone single, war times tend to make society *a lot* more lenient about social interactions with soldiers from your side. Entertaining the troops - as long as nothing actually happens - is expected from socialites, which both Angelica and Eliza are here. Peggy is dancing all alone at the other side of the balloom, and that, paired by the way she sings, what she says and her habing to be carried by the hand by Eliza, tells me that Peggy is meant to be read as *very* young.
Mortius’s Epic: The Musical playlist is missing the reaction that Mortius and Casper did for Monster. I’m putting this here hoping that someone will see this and fix it, because I wouldn’t want anyone just discovering these wonderful reactors to miss out on that wonderful reaction! I’m so excited to see you guys react to Helpless and Satisfied! Two of my favorite songs from Hamilton! Let’s go! 🥰
Yes, Mortius, Phillipa Soo is INCREDIBLE. So is Renée Elise Goldsberry. It's magical to see them in Sunday in Tick Tick BOOM but also, how could LMM not include them in that gem? Philippa shows epic versatility in Hamilton in particular.
Honestly, I hadn`t thought about Chris Jackson at the ball being anyone but George Washington before. I always just asumed it was him. Also, in the musical, yes, Angelica is sigle at this point. In reallife she was already married when she first met Alexander Hamilton. About Hamilton`s eyes. They are often described as some sort of purple (violet or something?) they just probably were more like blue or something similar. But him having very captivating eyes is probably pretty accurate. I don`t exactly know since it`s not really adressed but what I`ve often read is that in the musical John Laurens is Alexander`s best man and not George Washington. In actual history neither of them were actually even at the wedding and neither was any other of Hamilton`s friends besides one guy from military. So, it`s not that important anyway.
Actually the feral tomcat thing is not true, and Lin has admitted this, dont quite understand why he included that bit if its not true but its still funnt i guess
They included it because there was actually an (untrue) rumor started that Martha Washington named her feral Tom cat after Hamilton, but at the time a “Tom Cat” was not slang for being a player. It was only the term for an un neutered male cat (which when un neutered can be violent and fight with other males for territory). The untrue rumor was meant to disparage Hamilton at the time. Lin thought it would be funny to include it in the musical the way he did because the meaning of Tom Cat has flipped in time from something that was originally made to disparage him into something that a younger Hamilton might say “that’s true” to. Edit- if I remember correctly the rumor wasn’t even started until shortly after Hamilton’s death.
Also Martha Washington's tomcat was not actually named after Alexander Hamilton, however Lin was just too tickled by that bit of folklore not to include it. XD
Off-camera, you should watch some of the Covid-era livestreams they did for promo when Disney+ bumped up Hamilton to streaming instead of theatrical release. "Brady Bunch" style Zoom-call performances of the whole cast from their homes still sound amazing, but with some added real-life humor like Daveed Diggs (Lafayette) having to shoot in his bathroom while his wife (who was in the ensemble) got to shoot in a more comfortable home studio, or Leslie Odom (Burr) not able to stop himself from breaking into the choreography.
yes, in letters written to or about Hamilton, his eyes are often praised as being captivating, intelligent, etc. Lin has shared some of the references he found during his extensive research, including letters between Hamilton and Laurens.
The "How does a" opening music motif is my absolute favorite, just because of a detail change in the final time it's used. The strings sound like a door creaking open in all of the other times. I won't say more, so I don't spoil anything (although it was spoiled in literally the first song).
21:25 from what I looked up and I'm also going to put some stuff that I found from the exact document He pretty much looked like the human version of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast specifically the animated version a little bit like the live-action version something like that! "Sullivan says he had a light complexion, with rosy cheeks, and an “uncommonly handsome face.” His Grandson, Allan Hamilton, noted that His blue eyes were deep set above a strong Roman nose, and he had good bone structure, with a strong chin and jaw. He also had reddish brown hair that he often wore powdered." (from The Source material I found)
Okay, I need to repeat... your dynamics are improving with each video, I just love it. And I also have to say: Casper is SO funny in this video, I laughed a lot. And Mortious represents me a lot for being so passionate about this song. My gosh, one of your best videos
I'm really enjoying watching you two react to this. Mortius's dancing and lip-syncing is epic, and I love CF's reactions and facial expressions. You're both just having so much fun, and I am here for it.
So I took the time to look at a $10 bill after my first few times watching Hamilton and you actually get a sense for how pretty Hamilton's eyes were just from that. They're like...piercing even without color. Pretty wild
Maybe too soon, but any possibility of seeing/reacting to the deleted song "Congratulations"? At the appropriate time, of course, or all the way after the official musical. Just one of my favorite Hamilton songs.
Fun fact: When I was like 7, I met a former Harlem Globetrotter on a subway either to or from D.C. I was in Baltimore because (I think) we thought there was something at Johns Hopkins that would help with my useless legs, and the woman who helped us find our way around brought us to D.C., and at one point on the subway, she asked me what my favorite sports team was. I don't like sports, but I saw the Globetrotters on Scooby-Doo and became a fan because of that, so I said them. A man in a suit opened his briefcase, wrote something down, then handed me an autographed photograph of him as a Globetrotter. I can't remember his name, and I know I have the photo somewhere in my house, but Idk where, but that was a point in my life that I've never forgotten, which is significant because I have a TBI from health crises that has affected my memory.
At around 24:00 youre talking about their "Little place in Harlem". For as far as i know, there was nothing important about it in their historically accurate lives, BUT i believe it was one of the most important start up places of rap or something
This is what I found online: According to Fisher Ames, one of Hamilton's friends, “[His eyes] were of a deep azure, eminently beautiful, without the slightest trace of hardness or severity, and beamed with higher expressions of intelligence and discernment than any others I saw oscillate in the “human face divine.” (Also, some articles state his eyes were so blue they almost looked purple)
I love your commentary! It feels like I’m gushing with my friends with the back and forth, I adore it!! And it helps me pick up on things I never did-both of y’all have become my favorite reaction channels and I constantly look forward to these videos ❤❤ Keep it up !
As a funny historical note, that line about Angelica teasing Eliza that she should share Hamilton with her is actually real. She wrote Eliza in a letter in 1794, “I love him very much and if you were as generous as the Old Romans, you would lend him to me for a while.” On a more serious historical note, it is thought that Angelica and Alexander were probably attracted to each other, and were very much kindred spirits, but they never did anything about it. Angelica was too loyal to her sister to sleep with her sister's husband.
Oh yeah, Alexander's eyes were kind of legendary among society. And really, if you find a picture of him, the artists were really fond of them, too. 😆Hell, even his picture on the ten dollar bill shows his eyes off to good effect. He was a damn good looking man.
If you look at the portrait of Alexander, he has really nice eyes, and apparently that's accurate. The topic of the accuracy of portraits does bring up an interesting point. The time from when photography became possible to the time when photo editing became possible is actually relatively short, so there's only a small amount of time when images of people are guaranteed to be honest about their appearance. It's possible that some of the people whose portraits look really good were actually fugly, but they paid the artist to not depict them accurately.
Pretty please watch the deleted songs Congratulations and First Burn after you guys watch Reynolds Pamphlet and Burn, they have so many good callbacks to Helpless and Satisfied!!!!
@@TailsFan It’s the first draft of the song “Burn”, it was made for the musical but was rewritten for being out of character for Eliza. Personally, I consider that a deleted song.
I highly recommend reacting to the broadway musical *Wind in the Willows.* The songs are so dang good in it. And like 90% of them are so memorable and catchy. It's literally such a hidden gem that no one talks about cuz it's way more popular in the UK.
Skimming through the comments I havn't seen anyone explain explain historical ball etiquette, so let me explain real quick. Casper is absolutely right. Back then it would have been inappropriate them to talk to each other if they were not introduced - actually for anyone, married or not - though there were more leniencies once you're married. BUT they had special occasions where you might meet people outside your social bubble. Mainly balls! At balls gentlemen could walk up to you and ask you for a dance. If you were not introduced yet, you could either ask a common acquaintance to do so, OR ask the master of ceremonies - that was like 90% of his duties. Like, a gentlemen would go the master of ceremonies, say something like "see that girl? She hot! But I don't know anyone who knows her. So please introduce us, and then I can ask her to dance with me!". And once you were officially introduced it was okay for you to socialize and flirt and call on each other and stuff. THAT IS WHY PEOPLE WENT TO BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, Angelica walking up to Hamilton? That would not have happened (married or not)! That is our modern sensibilities being projected on a historical figure. But being introduced to someone at a ball? Yes absolutely, that's why you went there!
Harlem was, I think, new at the time, still being developed, and it wasn't uptown. I always felt this line was meant to show how Hamilton doesn't have the means to provide for her the way she's accustomed to. He doesn't have an estate to move her into, or the means to buy a place in one of the "good" (rich) neighborhoods. They have to get a LITTLE place that he doesn't already own in a neighborhood that isn't already established and "figure it out" At least that's me piecing together the little bit I know.
I forgot about flower boy Hercules Mulligan 😂😂 Helpless -> Satisfied is my fav pair of songs in the show, can’t wait to jump over to Casper’s channel! Also important to note that there were millions of people on the West side of North America at this time, it just hadn’t been colonized yet 😬
To answer Casper's question, at the time Harlem was out in the country outside New York, which was quite a bit smaller back then. I believe you can still go and visit his house in the country, though now it's in the middle of the city
I’m pretty sure the “Angelica tried to take a bite of me” line is about, like, verbal sparring. Giving him a run for his money on thinking he’s the cleverest person in the room. She definitely wouldn’t have made a pass at him.
kind of unrelated but defeinitly should play some of the cut songs when it gets to it ( congratulations) and just for funsies first burn. such good songs the the reactions would be great.
I believe that hamilton and Eliza met at a ball that was thrown by Martha, Washington for General Washington’s staff officers… so at 1330, it would seem that that is Washington at the ball that he and his wife are hosting.
Eliza and Hamilton's relationship isn't being sped up for the musical particularly, it actually was the case that there was only three weeks between the ball and them getting engaged, so it all happening in one song isn't condensing all that much!
Martha Washington (as far as I can find) didn't name a feral tomcat after Alexander, but it feels historically accurate that he'd encourage such a rumor.
if you’ve never watched the makeup sfx show Face Off, i imagine hamiltons eyes looked something close to Glenn Hetrick’s as i can never get over how deep blue that man’s eyes are
Leading up to 20:42 I was thinking, "Please be looking at the screen when Alexander does the dance, Casper!" and I'm so glad he was. The move isn't the same with every cast, apparently. I saw a clip of "Helpless" by another cast, and the guy playing Alexander did a different move.
Ive researched a lot about this stuff so i wanna share loll Hamilton only got married because he realized (i believe laurens was actually imprisoned at this time so he actually was NOT at hamiltons wedding) that after the war, he would be penniless and alone. So, obviously, getting married to a woman with a lot of money would fix that issue- And extra fun fact: hamilton originally did not want a wife. As said in a letter to laurens, and i quote, "Do i want a wife? No" At least I believe that's what he said, Ill have to check again bc I have that long ahh letter on my wall lmao
Harlem was originally a Dutch name for the New York City neighborhood. Just as Manhattan was originally named New Amsterdam, because it was settled by Dutch immigrants.
Regarding Lawrence walking Eliza I've read somewhere that he and Eliza + Hamilton spent the honeymoon night together however I think this is mere speculation although it is said that Hamilton did send rather affectionate letters to Lawrence. I think it was from someone's comment on another video or the wikipedia i cant remember. Take this with a grain of salt though.

I think Jackson is playing the Schuyler dad for these scenes
@@embracediscomfort6154It's actually the actor that plays a certain (different)role in the second half playing Philip Schuyler...
Actually the feral tomcat thing is not true, and Lin has admitted this, dont quite understand why he included that bit if its not true but its still funnt i guess
I think because of the punchline. It's not a super important part of history, but it's a fun story
21:25 from what I looked up and I'm also going to put some stuff that I found from the exact document
He pretty much looked like the human version of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast specifically the animated version a little bit like the live-action version something like that!
"Sullivan says he had a light complexion, with rosy cheeks, and an “uncommonly handsome face.”
His Grandson, Allan Hamilton, noted that His blue eyes were deep set above a strong Roman nose, and he had good bone structure, with a strong chin and jaw.
He also had reddish brown hair that he often wore powdered."
(from The Source material I found)
iirc Angelica did in fact write Eliza a letter about Alexander essentially saying "if you loved me, you'd share him" in a very lighthearted way.
I love your editors.. they make me laugh so much.
I really love Philipa's voice! She sings too in the movie Over The Moon, I love the song Ultraluminary
Okay, I need to repeat... your dynamics are improving with each video, I just love it. And I also have to say: Casper is SO funny in this video, I laughed a lot. And Mortious represents me a lot for being so passionate about this song. My gosh, one of your best videos
The 'Martha Washington's feral Tomcat' thing was a common rumour, but most historians apparently think it's probably false
I'm really enjoying watching you two react to this. Mortius's dancing and lip-syncing is epic, and I love CF's reactions and facial expressions. You're both just having so much fun, and I am here for it.
Hamilton did indeed have very pretty blue eyes, he was also a red head so yeah I'd say he was pretty attractive generally
So I took the time to look at a $10 bill after my first few times watching Hamilton and you actually get a sense for how pretty Hamilton's eyes were just from that. They're like...piercing even without color. Pretty wild
Hamilton is literally a ML from a romance novel with purplish eye
Historically Angelica was actually married at this time….but in the show they elude that she’s single
18:15 In the musical, Angelica didn’t get married until later, but she was infact canonically married at that time
I love your commentary!
She wrote Eliza in a letter in 1794, “I love him very much and if you were as generous as the Old Romans, you would lend him to me for a while.”
On a more serious historical note, it is thought that Angelica and Alexander were probably attracted to each other, and were very much kindred spirits, but they never did anything about it.
I love Peggy's little dance move at 19:02. I don't see it mentioned much, but it's really funny to me.
Yes, his eyes were often described as his finest feature.
At 21:15 they asked about his eyes and yes Hamilton supposedly had violet eyes like light purple blueish eyes. It was one of his defining features
Pretty please watch the deleted songs Congratulations and First Burn after you guys watch Reynolds Pamphlet and Burn, they have so many good callbacks to Helpless and Satisfied!!!!
First Burn isn't a deleted song, it's from a concept album with famous singers doing songs based on and from the musical.
@@TailsFan It’s the first draft of the song “Burn”, it was made for the musical but was rewritten for being out of character for Eliza. Personally, I consider that a deleted song.
@@ariaphoenix2760 Is it? Huh. Okay, then.
@@TailsFan And the singers are Elizas from various productions.
@@KZ-tt9me Really? I thought one of them was a famous singer.
4:28 PROPHET CASPER HAS MADE HIS WAY TO THE HAMILTON REACTIONS!!
M: "...and sometimes Wet Hades.
Anyway, 'down for the count and I'm drowning in it.' "
Casper sure is drowning in it LMAO
Alexander misunderstood General Washington. He wasn't looking for a _right_ hand man, he was looking for a _write_ hand man. 😂
PROPHETSPER!!!
I highly recommend reacting to the broadway musical *Wind in the Willows.* The songs are so dang good in it. And like 90% of them are so memorable and catchy. It's literally such a hidden gem that no one talks about cuz it's way more popular in the UK.
what i would GIVVEEEE to listen to this song for the first time again
I LOVE THE CHOREOGRAPHY HERE SO MUCH!!!!!!!!
They have to get a LITTLE place that he doesn't already own in a neighborhood that isn't already established and "figure it out"
At least that's me piecing together the little bit I know.
hey morton’s i have a question for you! Whats your favorite song from hamilton? just curious, Hamilton is my favorite musical (after epic lol)
@kenzieabner-gl5po i meant mortius it autocorrected sorry
Wait for It for sure!
I can't wait until you get to Burn, haha. Love that voice.
Yes, Hamilton was known for his pretty violet-blue eyes.
Hamilton did have pretty eyes! They were indigo apparently
I love that amid all the other intense rap and hip-hop, this one has the vibe of an R&B girl group ballad. It's just such a cool vibe shift.
I don't know about his eyes but I do know that the real Hamilton was supposedly very handsome
I think the drowning in his eyes line is a nod to his eyes being blue witch was also seen as very pretty eye color
I think the bald guy Casper is seeing is Seth Stewart. He’s a brilliant dancer, and played Graffiti Pete in In The Heights on Broadway
Mortius’s little aside glance to the camera at “my love for you is never in doubt” … SIR
kind of unrelated but defeinitly should play some of the cut songs when it gets to it ( congratulations) and just for funsies first burn. such good songs the the reactions would be great.
I believe that hamilton and Eliza met at a ball that was thrown by Martha, Washington for General Washington’s staff officers… so at 1330, it would seem that that is Washington at the ball that he and his wife are hosting.
You might be reacting with a detective, with what he catches while listening
Eliza and Hamilton's relationship isn't being sped up for the musical particularly, it actually was the case that there was only three weeks between the ball and them getting engaged, so it all happening in one song isn't condensing all that much!
I live for these videos ❤❤❤
I’m pretty sure Hamilton had very pretty purplish-blue eyes
Ive researched a lot about this stuff so i wanna share loll
Hamilton only got married because he realized (i believe laurens was actually imprisoned at this time so he actually was NOT at hamiltons wedding) that after the war, he would be penniless and alone.
So, obviously, getting married to a woman with a lot of money would fix that issue-
And extra fun fact: hamilton originally did not want a wife. As said in a letter to laurens, and i quote, "Do i want a wife? No"
At least I believe that's what he said, Ill have to check again bc I have that long ahh letter on my wall lmao
It’s historical/fan head cannon that Alexander was bisexual because of these affectionate letters between Lawrence and Hamilton.
14:15 yes! I love that sound! Kind if reminds me of like an explosion shockwave
0:36 TWELVE LONG YEARS SINCE I HAVE SEEN-
You should react to Waitress. It is probably my FAVORITE Musical
18:12 in the musical they are all single but in real history angelica was married at the time.
I'm sorry did you just call stay alive an in between song
22:31 “and then sometimes wet hades”
Hamilton actually did have really unique eyes. A lot of his contemporary said so. And he wasn't able to grow a beard easily. People said that too.
Historically Hamilton was handsome, I think the eyes specifically is about the intelligence in them
Thx for the reaction
Harlem was basically outside of town. It was farms.
Eliza Schuyler did talk about Alexander's eyes a lot, if I remember correctly.
you will get the eyes reference at the end of the musical
