LOGAN RIVER FLATHEAD FISHING 3RD NOVEMBER 2023

- I was back down the Logan River on Friday and my aim was to catch a couple of flathead and a couple of mud crabs. The first part of the equation was a success with 3 nice flathead caught and in the esky.
It was a nice morning with the breeze to my back and I was fishing the last part of the run out tide and the first of the run in tide.
The first of the flathead was caught when the tide was turning, it was a typical flathead bite when fishing with dead bait (pilchards) where the flathead virtually mouthed the bait as I was taking up the slack in the line.
The next 30 minutes of the run in tide kept me on my toes with two massive stingrays wanting a pilchard breakfast. It took me awhile to get a look at them but the line was cut and they were released. (not on the video)
The next 30 - 45 minutes was pretty quiet with 2 bream caught so I decided to move about 50 metres with the move resulting in almost instant success.
2 more flathead were caught in a space of about 5 minutes and with 3 flathead and 2 bream in the esky it was time to go..
I was fishing for about 2 hours, at the most and I would say it was a productive morning.
I hope you enjoy the video and if there are any questions please do not hesitate to send me a message.
Thanks John. Good information 👍.
The best Fishing Videos out there, no swearing no squealing and best of all NO ELECTRONIC BULLSHIT.
Hey Darryl,
Thanks for the feedback. In saying that if there is anything you don't like or would prefer, please let me know, but actually I am just out there fishing with a Gopro behind me
good work mate look forward to seeing you next time your on the Mighty Logan
Finally a real fisherman who catches fish to eat not brag about. Love the Alveys.
I'm the same. I too fish to put food on the table and that's what I like about John's approach and videos.
Nice catch mate.
I enjoyed watching that John, only fished the Logan a couple of times but didn’t get good fish like you did. Hope to see more, new sub.
Actually overseas at the moment. Probably back on the water by the end of November.
Well done John. You've boated a few nice flatties lately.
Yes - it has been pretty productive over the last few weeks.
Another successful trip John. I’d like to have so much success in just a couple of hours. I’ll have to give the Logan a go.
Some good fish there. A bit more detail on bait, rig and technique would be appreciated.
Hey Jeremy,
When fishing for flathead - I fish with a 9lb line and a 9lb leader - trace length is about 300 to 400mm.
I use two gang hooks (no.3) with a half a pilchard for bait.
When fishing with dead baits (pilchards, strips of fish or prawns) they only mouth the bait and do not aggressively bite like if it is a live bait.
You can usually observe the first bite with a small movement of the rod tip. You can then feel the flathead swallowing the bait and that is when I lift the rod to take the weight.
I hope this helps.
How come you dont brain spike or bleed any of your fish?
You don't need to bleed most of the fish. I only bleed tailor or trevally.
What rods are you using John; make and length? Thanks
sorry for the late reply. I am actually OS at the moment. I use Jarvis Walker Jimmy Crane Light rods. 2.6 metre in length
thanks mate enjoy your trip.@@johnthefishingman
Nice work again mate.....what bait this time

@@johnthefishingman cheers mate..ta
Solid feed there mate.
Ive always done better on the run out in the Logan, the the run in. I've found i could sit there for hours til it changes again, but i dont mind. lol
I have done OK on both tides but lately it has definitely been better fishing the run in tide.
hi john were is old gazebo at logan rive
Hi Chris - I call it the old Gazebo - I am unsure of the actual name but there used to be a covered gazebo on the bank and it was burnt down - now there are only pillars there where it once stood.
From the Riedel Road Boat ramp - the first hard right bend in the river going down stream it is on the left hand side.
You said you’re using pilchards. WA pillies or little frogmouth ones?
WA pilchards
