It was very common at sign on-sign off that stations used both O Canada and the SSB when they had viewership in Canada. WTVS was not the only station that did it.
The technical maintenance portion of the sign off sounds like it was live. You can hear the mic switch just before Paul Winter speaks. Very rare to have an actual live booth announcer in the 1990s.
This guy reading off the technical information is the grown-up equivalent of your parents tucking you into bed and reading you a story that you fall asleep during. Something oddly satisfying and comforting. Also I wanna start a band called Domestic Fixed Satellite Earth Station.
Katheryne Koelker Were there any American radio and television stations on the Canadian border that played the Royal anthem of Canada as well as the National anthem at closedown?
Detroit television has a great presence in Windsor. So much so a Windsorite need not learn about Celsius. He can still listen to Detroit weather reports in Fahrenheit.
American national anthem played with a revolutionary war painting image was used by the ABC O&O Stations including KABC in Los Angeles, WABC in New York City, and WLS TV in Chicago
There have been friendly relations between Detroit and Windsor for many years. With Canada Day on July 1 and Independence Day on July 4, it is usually a long riverfront celebration during the holidays, or at least it used to be, until Detroit was ruined.
As far as I know they still have the Freedom festival between the two holidays. I remember watching the fireworks every year when we got WDIV on our cable system.
WTVS and WWJ-TV channel 4 are the ONLY TV stations serving Detroit-Windsor-Pontiac that have studios in DETROIT PROPER. Everyone else has studios in Southfield (the WTVS and WWJ-TV ch 4 transmitter are in Southfield).
First the WWJ-TV call letters now belong to CBS 62 and have since 1995. Their studios are in Southfield. Channel 4 changed its call to WDIV in 1978. WTVS moved its offices and studios to Wixom in 2005.

4kids tv Detroit sign off narrated by Adam Devine and the national anthems of Canada and us by Michael buble and gronkowski introduced by Laura trevelyan
I noticed that this is very impersonal, unlike a BBC One or Two closedown. Why is this? The latter was very intimate and sometimes quite humorous. Also, why no play of the Royal Anthem of Canada?
For whatever reason we pre-recorded nearly all of our sign-offs. The Royal Anthem is likely not played because this is a U.S. station, not a Canadian one.
I say PBS. Our local network (Prairie Public Television) doesn't leave the air at night. But I've seen many other PBS networks sign off through these videos. I find them very interesting and often strangely comforting.
I really, really love sign-offs that include tons of technical details, such as this one.
Agreed, but scary after watching a horror film!
I love all the Michigan scenery during the SSB. Very proud to have been born and raised in this beautiful state!
Same, love this state! The winters are absolute hell but it's nice to not have to worry about earthquakes or hurricanes. :)
Me too!
It was very common at sign on-sign off that stations used both O Canada and the SSB when they had viewership in Canada. WTVS was not the only station that did it.
What about CBC stations? Some of them obviously have viewership in the US, but they only signed on or off with O Canada.
WNED-TV in Buffalo, NY used to play "O Canada" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" during sign-on and sign-off many years ago!
@@denelson83 Peterborough affiliate CHEX did for a while, not aware of any other that did.
CBC used the o Canada with glowing hearts (film from 1979 comes from NFB Canada) during Sign on and off since 1980's

someguy23475 Paul Winter was a dear friend of the family. A sweet, sweet man.
Saul Wineman (Paul Winter) had an incredible voice. He is missed.
No, it was recorded.
I like all the detailed information...but then, I'm an engineer!
King Bee You usually do not get the address for the FCC
Canadian national anthem begins at 5:55 and the U.S. national anthem begins at 7:25

Ha - that’s very sweet. His name was Saul Wineman and he lived in Huntington Woods, MI. I really liked him.
Until recently WHUT 32, Howard University's Public TV station in Washington, DC just signed off with a slide with their info.
Seattle also had TV stations that signed off and on with both the Canadian and American anthems.
Larry Waldbillig So does NY
Larry Waldbillig ddrrtttgggg
Buffalo?
Larry Waldbillig It was very common for stations close to the Canadian boarder as they had viewrship in Canada

Dayton-Hudson Corporation totally stole their logo from the CBC.
will89687 actually, I think it was the other way around.
Apparently I’m not the only one who noticed that
I just noticed that.
Sure does, and there are plenty of cable outlets in Canada that may carry WTVS as it's PBS channel of choice as well.
Detroit television has a great presence in Windsor. So much so a Windsorite need not learn about Celsius. He can still listen to Detroit weather reports in Fahrenheit.
this is our high definition pbs feed in south eastern ontario
In the case of Detroit, Windsor, Ontario is considered part of the Detroit TV market (or use to be).
This tune comes from the movie poltergeist in 1982
American national anthem played with a revolutionary war painting image was used by the ABC O&O Stations including KABC in Los Angeles, WABC in New York City, and WLS TV in Chicago
The video for the American national anthem came from the 1987 Michigan tourism commercial.
@1:59 Who had the similar logo first - Dayton Hudson or CBC?
The Dayton Hudson Corporation logo looks similar to CBC

Notice how that Dayton Hudson logo looks eerily similar to the current logo of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
at first i thought he said WTBS sounds like a good station back in the day
No, CBET would not "have" to do anything. WTVS plays the Canadin national anthem as a courtesy only.
Yes The SSB Film Is The Audio Of The Revolutionary War Film From WLS-TV Chicago.
WTVS TV 56 Detroit, Mi Sign Off recorded in 2014
Yes, because Detroit is near Canada.
Yes, it is *north* of Windsor!

WLS also play the same melody in their sign offs and sign ons

Do you think that CBET should play the star spangled banner as a curdicy to it's Detroit vewors?
A "curdicy" to Detroit "vewors"? Maybe as a courtesy to RUclips viewers, you shud lern how too spel.
At least you do.
If you can't handle an American station playing our national anthem, stop being a hoser & get ooot.
No worries. We're neighbors and friends.
Bring back the closedown with the national anthem era to US and Canada TV please
7:29 The US National Anthem
If Windsor is considered part of the Detroit market. Then CBET would half to play the star spangled banner as well as o Canada at sign off

PBS WFUM TV 28 Flint Michigan

Peak aural???
Analog television audio in the US has been FM since the 1940s. It was simply 155kW aural, at full modulation or dead silence.
Aural means in technical terms sound. What the announcer is relating to is peak sound power performance.
