The Village People performing the iconic disco classic hit "Y.M.C.A." from 1978. This is from the broadcast of Steve Harvey's New Year's Eve 2020 on Fox. The audience does it with the group. It was filmed in Times Square on December 31, 2019.
Sad part is I used to love this group. The lead singer is my neighbor. The wife only seem to come out to scream at people if their dogs get too close to her property.
No it's not...in the 70s and nearly 80s the YMCA was place kids could go for athletics that was cheap, and the YMCA assisted poor kids...tooooooo many people believe because it was the disco era it was a gay song because the Village People sang it...they also did a religious song called Sodom and Gemorhha
Through legal maneuvering, Victor took the band back over and kicked everyone else out. These things happen in business, but to read his quotes in various articles is pretty sad. Basically, in his mind, he's the entire group and nobody else matters.
I’m not certain but I believe the lead singer (cop) is Victor Willis, and the Native American is Felipe Rose. I know the cowboy and the leather man are not originals (the latter, Glenn Hughes, passed away).
Doing well ,getting paid their royalties, Glenn the original leather man died from cancer and was replaced by Eric Anzalone years ago, victor Willis the original lead singer finally got control of the band and sued for millions in publishing money he was finally owed, it took decades but now he owns the group
Victor now owns the rights to the name and licensing for the group since that license expired in 2017. In 1987 5 original members (Alex, Felipe, David Hodo - construction worker, Glenn Hughes - leather man, and cowboy Randy Jones) along with Ray formed their own company Sixuvus and bought the rights to the group and associated trademarks from Morali and his business partner for a 30-year deal. Victor's legal team then wrangled that away when the time came up for renewal. Victor essentially fired those who had been performing as VP for the past 35+ years, including Felipe and Alex. Jones and Hodo had quit twice previously. Jones left when Morali wanted to change their look to a bizarre New Romantic image (with Steve Strange makeup and poofy clothes). He was replaced by Jeff Olson. Hodo left after that album (Renaissance) bombed. Willis would return for the Fox on the Box album, never released in the States, but would be replaced again for the last (for the long time) official VP album, Sex Over the Phone. At this point the group was essentially finished but then Jones reached out to the others, including Simpson, to buy the rights and re-form the group. They released a few singles but never got a new record deal. Jones left again in the early 90's, to be replaced by Olson, who stayed until 2012-13ish. Hughes announced in 95 he had contracted lung cancer (he would pass away in March 2001), and handpicked his replacement, Eric Anzalone, who stayed until Willis took over. Hodo retired at age 66/67 from performing altogether in 2013 or 14, and has been quietly (and privately) enjoying retirement ever since, rarely making public appearances. Jim Newman and Bill Whitefield respectively replaced Olson and Hodo permanently as the cowboy and construction worker. Felipe Rose announced his departure about the same time Willis re-took the reins. The Sixuvus group now tours and performs as The Kings of Disco, when not being hounded by Willis for copyright infringement. They have to be extremely careful in how they promote themselves legally. For awhile they used the parenthetical "(Featuring former members of Village People)," but I think Willis has quashed that too. If they've worked out a deal, I'm unaware of it. It's sad because Victor has been so vindictive about the whole thing. I'm glad he cleaned up his substance abuse issues and criminal record, but this current incarnation he leads (the official group) is nowhere close to the originals or even the last one. For someone who has, and continues to, adamantly insisted the songs are not "gay" themed and that people just read more into them, currently fronts a group of musclebound himbos who couldn't land a gig with a second-rate Chippendales male stripper revue. I watched a recent 2023 show and was disgusted at the obvious stripper tropes the guys did, ripping off shirts, caressing muscles, tweaking, etc. Not saying the originals did dance "sexy" just not blatant.
Glenn is the only one ,was replaced by Eric Anzalone the others are still with us, victor fired everyone who was still performing , randy the cowboys is doing well
