    The bright red berries of the Yew tree are widely considered to be lethally toxic and to be avoided at all costs. This isn't strictly true as the "flesh" of the berries is actually the only non-poisonous part of the entire tree! The seed inside the fruit is highly toxic and potentially fatal consequences can result from ingesting it, but as we see in this video, the flesh of the fruit is not only very nutritious and safe to eat, but it tastes damn good too!

    That tree provides a very important and useful anticancer medication (Taxol and it's variants). They used to only be able to harvest the drug from the tree itself until chemist developed a total synthesis for it. Now you can just make the stuff in bulk in some industrial type lab.

    • @rabbitspliff
      @rabbitspliff 8 лет назад +8

      +gogo311 as he explained, humans have a far higher tolerance to certain toxins (including taxine) than horses. honestly, horses will die from practically anything bad you put in them.
      i think in general because herbivores have guts that more thoroughly break down plant matter, a lot more of the toxins are released in their gut than in ours.

    • @LucasAdamson
      @LucasAdamson 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, usually horses die from the leaves, particularly if somebody lops a branch off and leaves it lying to waste, and a horse eats the dried out leaves. It happens a lot.

    • @notone4540
      @notone4540 6 лет назад +2

      2 seeds would not kill a horse.The horse would never notice.
      Maybe 25 to 50 grams of seeds could start to be dangerous. And some horses can and have adapted to eating yew, just never huge amounts.
      500 grams of leaves kills a cow, deer and rabbits seem immune, small handful of leaves kills human, seeds kill humans when they chew the seeds and just swallowing seeds seems to be ok but just spit em out.
      The digestive track of horses and cows is very different. But cows and deer have very similar digestion yet cows die from it and deer dont. The reality is that the animals can become immune by browsing little bits of it regularly. (as they would in the wild always moving on and never eating whole trees just bits here and there)
      Problem with modern farming methods is that they never see a yew tree, except for the last tree they see upon death, if u know what I mean.

    Correct, I eat the berries all the time and just spit out the seeds. No big feat. And should you swallow a seed, well, I just don't worry, it just comes out whole again. Seeds have to be chewed open to release the toxins. The purpose of the seed is to be eaten by birds and go through their system and come out whole again. Seeds are very hard to be absorbed by the gastric juices. Virtually impossible. They just don't break open in the stomach or gut.

    If they were kept trimmed then it wouldn't matter. That's pretty much the whole concept of Bonsai. You keep a tree trimmed back and it never grows beyond the size you've kept it trimmed to. I am 98% certain this is used as a hedge in many yards.

    • @TheGreatGodPan
      @TheGreatGodPan 9 лет назад +1

      +Moon Child No, I think the leaves may actually be the most toxic part of the tree. I got the impression before looking further that what he says is literally true about nothing other than the berries being edible.
      I have even seen new agey posters listing it as a wood for burning, THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!! the wood is poisonous and so therefore is the smoke, and the sawdust which is why any woodturner/carver will tell you to be especially careful with ventilation and not breathing it in (not that any wood dust is healthy to breathe in - they're all carcinogens)
      But good to have this confirmed...time to visit some churchyards I guess...

    You added a 0 to practically every estimate of age. That tree isnt going to be 200 years old, they dont regularly reach 2000 years and never 5000 years.
    The oldest tree in the WORLD is just over 5000 years.
    A tree of that size looks similar to one where I grew up, it was possibly 40 years but was probably only 30

      It is said that if you swallow the seed whole without biting it or damaging it in any way, it passes straight through the gut without any toxin coming out. That's probably what happened in your case but I wouldn't risk it. The slightest damage to the seed could be dangerous.

      Ella Murph "In the case of an overdose with yew plant material, the taxoids taxine A and taxine B block calcium channels in cardiac myocytes (19) causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness, seizures, and abdominal pain. These initial symptoms are followed by cardiovascular effects such as bradycardia and then ventricular tachycardia with severe ventricular arrhythmias and episodes of ventricular fibrillation, severe hypotension, and respiratory distress. Clinical laboratory findings can show hypokalemia."
      jat.oxfordjournals.org/content/36/1/36.full
      Even though these symtoms don't always occur before death, this can hardly be considered a sudden death, right?
