To be honest having a debate on who is the best between Canning and Callinan is an insult to Canning. There is no comparison who is the best overall and complete hurler. Dont get me wrong, Callinan has been a brillant player since 2014 and he would be on my best 1 to 15 team in the last ten years but Canning is a step up again in class. Callinan may have got more goals at full forward than Canning but Canning's roll has changed in the last 4 to 5 years. When Canning was playing at 14 he often got the better of JJ Delaney, Jackie Tyrell, Diarmuid O'Sullivan etc and was banging in goals wholesale. If you even look at yesterdays game, Callinan got and took his goal well but he got the opportunity after Daithi Burke slipped, he got one more excellent point in the 2nd half and overall Burke destroyed him and not for the first time. He caught ball after ball over Callinan and when Callinan went out the field to get on more possession, Burke got the better of him out there too. On the other hand, Canning was involved in a lot of Galway scores besides the frees is scored. He was involved in a lot of assists, initially made the block down for Hartes goal, set up points for joseph cooney, Jason Flynn and there are only what I can remember off hand. Struck a great sideline under pressure from a tight angle when Galway were behind. Would Callinan have scored that...not if he was there for another week. Canning career is way ahead of Callinan's... taking into account of colleges, club and inter county career. In modern times TJ Reid is the only other player who I could compare to Canning. Maybe a video between these two would be interesting.
Being a Wicklow man so no skin in the game (but also no one like Tipp tbf), while Seamie is great you would take Joe over his career any day of the week. Maybe only TJ is comparable there. That said, hard to replace Verney as greatest import to the garden
Callahan wouldn’t tie joe canning boots the only reason tipp beat Galway in 2016 was when Maher injured canning joe canning never had the supporting cast Callahan had or shefflin or tj Reid the man retired at 32 top scorer in championship history his won everything that can be won since the age of 15 and look what he won with portumna
Joe canning is better. Even though both are overrated. It is ridiculous to compare joe canning to Eoin Kelly. Neither joe or seamie are as good as tj Reid or Patrick Horgan. Seamie deserved hoty in 2016 but not 2019. All in my opinion
